SUMMARY OF SIWES

1.0. INTRODUCTION OF SIWES

Student’s Industrial work experience scheme(SIWES) is one of the industrial training fund(ITF)
Programme which was introduced in 1974 due to the ability of engineering and technology student
in Nigeria universities and polytechnics to meet the practical aspect of their training.
That is,needs to enable student match their theoretical school knowledge with the practical aspect
of their training in industry. The last for six months.According to Ekpenyong (2011),one of the
principles underlying any industrial work experience scheme for students in institution of learning
is the desire to marry the practical with the theoretical learning which characterize conventional
classroom situation with a view to striking a balance between theory and practice..The author
stressed further that it was in realization of this that the ITF when it was established, set out to study
the extent which the theoretical knowledge that students in engineering technology and other allied
field in Nigeria institution offering technology based courses related to the kind of work experience
expected to them by employers.
The result of ITF Survey showed a great disparity between student’s knowledge and their ability
to apply it in relevant job. In order to bridge the gap between the two ,the ITF in 1974 established a
cooperative internship Programme, which enables student of technology to spend some part of their
courses for relevant on the job practical experience in appropriate areas of the Nigeria industry.
(Ekpenyogo,2011). The author further stressed that the internship Programme,SIWES,can therefore
be seen as that which is intended to give Nigeria students studying occupationally related course
experience that would supplement their theoretical learning as well as equipping the student with
the needed skills to function in the word of work

1.1.BRIEF HISTORY OF SIWES

In recognition of the shortcomings and the weakness in the formation of SET graduates, particularly
with respect to acquisition of relevant production skills, the industrial training funds(which was
itself established in 1971 by decree 47)initiated the Student’s Industrial Work Experience
Scheme(SIWES) in 1973.The scheme was designed to expose students to the industrial environment
and enable them develop occupational competencies so that they can readily contribute quota to
national economic and technological development after graduation.
Consequently,SIWES is a planned and structure program based on stated and specific career
objectives which are geared towards developing the occupational competencies of participant
In spite of the challenges faced by SIWES in the four decades of it existence, the schemes has not
only raised consciousness and increase awareness about the needs for training of SET students, but
has also helped in the formation of skilled and competent indigenous man power which has been
manning and managing technological resources and industrial sector of economy
1.2.OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
The industrial Training fund’s policy Document No.1 of 1973 which established SIWES outlined
the objectives of the scheme. The objectives are to:
1) It provides an avenue for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire industrial skills
and experience during their course of study
2) It expose students to work method and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that
may not be available in their institutions
3) It makes the transition from school to the world of work easier and enhance students contact
for later job placement and a chance to evaluate companies for which they might wish to work
4) It provides student with the opportunities to apply educational knowledge in real work and
industrial situations, there by bridging between theory and practice
5) The program teaches the student on how to interact effectively with other workers and
supervisors under various conditions in the organization

1.3.BENEFITS OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING TO STUDENTS.

There are several benefits of industrial training to students;
1) Practical exposure: Industrial training provides students with practical exposure to real world
work environments. This helps then bridge the gaps between theoretical knowledge gained in
classrooms and practical application in the industry
2) Skill development:Industrial training allows students to develop and enhance their technical
skills. They get hands-on experience in using tools, which help them improve their skills
3) Industry insight:Students gain valuable insights into the industry they are interested in
pursuing a career. They get to observe and understand how different departments and functions work
together
4) Networking opportunities:Industrial training provides students with opportunity to network
with professional and experts in their field.
5) Improved employability:Industrial training enhances students employability by making them
more marketable to employers.
6) Career exploration:Industrial training allows students to explore different career Path
within their chosen field.it helps them gain a better understanding of their strengths, interests and
area they may want to specialize in.

RECOMMENDATION
As a result of difficulties experience during three month siwes program, there are some references I
would like to recommend:
The ITF should made monthly allowance available for all the students so as to put an end to
financial difficulties that may arise as a result of a transport problems.
Proper coordination and supervision of the exercise:The various bodies involved in the
management of SIWES exercise I.e Federal Government, industrial training fund,NUC,NCCE,and
other organization should come together and bring out modality that will ensure smooth operation
of SIWES exercise. Effort should be made so that student would be encouraged and willing to do
anything they are asked to do and supervise
