Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

In the rapid change of the world today, the importance of moral

among youth seems decrease drastically among teenagers in the world.

Society does not fall prey to degeneration of values, which would lead to

rampant suffering and ultimately chaos. It is a concern to help the society by

safeguarding it from unwanted ills and malaises.

Value-based education is essential to develop an individual and help

him/her a lifelong in many ways. It gives a positive direction to the students

to shape their future and even helps them to know the purpose of their life.

It also helps students to develop a strong relationship with family and friends.

It is absolutely important to teach moral values in students because it is then

that they take their first steps towards life, and it matters that they do it

right. These moral values shape their attitude, beliefs, and ideas and help

them develop into undeterred and morally strong individuals.

Giving importance to integrating values to the study habit of students

is a great step for them to have good grades and possibility to graduate with

flying colors and land a good job. The integration of values towards study

habit is indeed a great help not only to students but also to professors and

teachers.

According to Azikiwe, “good study habits are good assets to learners”

because the (habits) assist students to attain mastery in areas of

specialization and consequents excellent performance, while opposite

constitute constraints to learning and achievement leading to future. Values

development is equally important with the study habit because it help

students grow and develop. They help in creating future that they want to

experience. The decision they make are a reflection of values and beliefs, and

they are always directed towards a specific purpose. According to Rana &

Kausar, “The Future of a Country depends upon moral values imparted to

individual during their student life. Moral lessons should be properly

implemented among students in schools and colleges”. Values are ideals and

principles that a person follows to determine the right and wrong. These

virtues and ideals are essential in building up the character of an individual

because it will be the standards the person will look up to as he/she grows

up. Values can be built on an individual mainly by his/her family, peer group,

teachers and specially the school itself.

Sawar et.al., “since we live in the information age, this fact clearly

makes new demand on the educational system, requiring radical changes on

“what” and “how” pupils learn and why students are not doing as per

expectations” It is important to have a clear understanding of what benefits

or hinders one’s educational achievement. This is the premise on which this

study is justified.

In Ceguera Technological Colleges (CTC) certain initiatives are being

introduced to improve the study habits among the students. There are

various seminars and webinars that are given to students to help with their

study habits as well as different trainings and webinars for instructors to help

the students in their academic performance. With this, the researcher are

interested to explore on the study habits of the Criminology students as well

as the values that can be integrated to enhance their study habits. Moreover,

study also aimed to identify the factors affecting on study habits and to find

possible solutions that can be recommended to improve the study habits and

values integration among Criminology students of Ceguera Technological

Colleges.

Statement of the Problem

The study aimed to explore on the study habits, values that can be

integrated to enhance the study habits, factors affecting in the study habits

and the possible solutions can be recommended to improve the study habits

and values integration among Criminology students of Ceguera Technological

Colleges.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the study habits among Criminology students in terms of the

following

a. Time Management

b. Class Attendance and Participation

c. Exam Preparation

d. General Study and Strategy

e. Note Taking

f. Academic Stress

2. What are the values that can be integrated to enhance the study

habits among Criminology students?

3. What are the factors affecting in the study habits among Criminology

students?

4. Based from the findings of the study, what possible solutions can be

recommended to improve the study habits and values integration among

Criminology students of Ceguera Technological Colleges?

Assumptions of the Study

The researchers work with the following assumptions:

1. The study habits of the Criminology students varies.

2. There are values that can be integrated to enhance the study habits.

3. There are several factors affecting in the study habits among

Criminology students of Ceguera Technological Colleges.

4. There are possible solution that can be recommended to improve the

study habits and values integration among Criminology students of Ceguera

Technological Colleges.

Significance of the Study

This study has a significant contribution to the following:

Criminology Students. This will enable them to develop good study

habits which could lead good academic performance. This study would

expose students to different study habits and values that can be integrated

that would enable them to develop good strategies which could lead to good

academic performance.

Teachers. This will benefit them in knowing the study habits of their

students that would help them in giving activities that would likely fit their

students study habits. Teachers would also see the result of the finding useful

especially in discharging their duties in the school.

Parents. The result of the finding would help sensitize parents on how

to encourage their children to develop effective study habit through the

information that would be provided in the study.

Administrators. The study would enable the administrators to initiate

programs that would facilitate effective habits among students in the school.

Researchers. The study would help the researchers in recommending

possible solutions to improve the study habits and values integration in the

study habits among Criminology students.

Future Researchers. The findings that this study may reveal may be

of help to the future researchers for them to be used as basis for their

research work. This research may help and guide them through their future

study that they may seek.

Scope and Delimitation

This study primarily focused on the study habits among Criminology

students and values that can be integrated well as the factors affecting in the

students study habits. The respondents are Criminology students of Ceguera

Technological Colleges since they have the biggest population in the school.

The survey questionnaire was conducted via Google form.

Definition of Terms

The term frequently used in this study were defined and explained for

the better understanding of the readers and future researchers.

Study. Defined as a way of applying the mind to learning and

understanding a subject (Vocabulary.com).

Habits. This is a settled tendency or usual manner of behavior or an

acquired mode of behavior that has become nearly or completely involuntary

(merriam-webster.com).

Study Habits. Is the student’s way of study whether systematic,

efficient or inefficient, which produces positive academic performance while

inefficient study habits leads to academic failure. Study habits are the ways or

manner the students habitually use in studying.

Values. Are individual beliefs that motivate people to act one way or

another. They serve as a guide for human behavior.

Integration. Dictionary.com defined integration as an act or instance

of combining into an integral whole.

Values Integration. Are the values that the students identified as a

contributor in the enhancement of their study habits.

Time Management. Is how the Criminology students use their free

time between classes, balance their study time with recreation, having a

study schedule, dealing with marking exam dates, project due dates, and

assignments in a calendar of the semester, keeping a weekly schedule,

studying on the weekends and using daily to-do list.

Class Attendance & Preparation. Is how the Criminology

students’ deals with attending the class regularly, and getting to class early

on time, study preparation and finding a comfortable place to listen and

watch the lecture.

Exam Preparation. Is defined as reviewing older material before the

exam and reviewing several chapters before the exam, reviewing exam with a

peer, studying for exams five days before, making up exam questions and

answer them, making up exam questions using the same format as the actual

exam, and reviewing for exams by explaining concepts to others.

General Study and Strategy. Refers to strategies used in planning

time to do the assignment, turning the assignment on time, taking a break

when they are studying, always looking for the additional reference from the

internet, always ask the instructor if they don’t understand, dealing with

using index cards to write down important information, working on more

difficult task first, and having a regular study area that is free from

distraction.

Note Taking. Refers to taking notes as they read.

Academic Stress. Reflects Criminology student’s perception as well

as his way of coping with academic events; it reflects subjective feelings of

distress or Interpersonal perceptual responses as a way of performing well in

class.

Responsible and Sensible. This is involving accountability or

responsibility, as in having power to control or manage.

Critical Thinking. Is defined as the intellectually disciplined process

of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing,

and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation,

experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and

action.

Respect and Empathy. The ability to appreciate, and respond to,

the feelings of others and showing due regard for the feelings, needs, or

rights of others.

Discipline and Resilience. Wifidiff.com defined this as the mental

ability to recover quickly from depression, illness or misfortune.

Tolerance and Understanding. A fair, objective, and permissive

attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality,

etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry while understanding is a

psychological process related to an abstract or physical object, such as a

person, situation, or message, whereby one is able to think about it and use

concepts to deal adequately with that object.
