President Ferdinand E. Marcos's martial law was the subject of the documentary "Batas
Militar." It describes how the previous leader planned to declare martial law in the Philippines
while he was in office. According to the 1973 Constitution of the Philippine Republic, the Prime
Minister, who serves as Commander-in-Chief, has the authority to impose martial law "in case of
invasion, insurgency, or rebellion, or imminent risk thereof, the public safety needs it." If the
President exercises this option, though, he or she runs the risk of corrupting the military forces
and becoming a captive of ambitious Generals who want to exercise power through a puppet
president who bears no responsibility.
Since the values of human rights, democracy, and social justice are emphasized in the
Philippine Constitution, it is also crucial for the country's integrity. These values were taken from
the Filipino people during the dark days of martial law, which entails the temporary replacement
of military authority with civilian rule. Most young people today don't really study history because
it is sometimes taught in a dry manner that requires students to memorize important figures
from various eras and minor events that happened in particular. This is a major drawback when
dealing with historical distortion in social media because young people won't know what is true
or false and will instead only believe in what seems to be the simplest explanation of all, and
when they do that they fall into traps. Don't let names or specific events divert your students'
attention from the primary issue; instead, let them enjoy history. I'm confident that most of them
will prefer it this way since they will study and grasp the subject more effectively. For history is a
vast book of stories replete with heroic conflicts and legends.
The entire nation and its inhabitants were affected by martial law. The majority of people
opposed it, while some thought it might not have been as horrible as we feared. The brutality
with which Marcos treated the Philippines was highlighted in our recent history, and he was
branded as the nation's tyrant. It was no secret that the situation was getting worse at the time.
Thousands of individuals were affected by this law and endured torture by the military,
imprisonment, arrest, and execution. Without a doubt, our history was more than a roller coaster
ride. Additionally, they think that communist armed forces are attempting to invade the country
and that the Philippines is sick, with certain rural areas experiencing government-rebellion. Yet,
I also thought that at the time, Ferdinand Marcos' power as president went beyond what was
allowed. Over the period of martial law, Marcos changed the constitution multiple times, and I
think he made good use of this. In addition to closing down media outlets that criticized the
wrongdoings and shortcomings of the Marcos administration, democracy has been put to an
end, and there is no longer any news critical of the Marcos administration in broadsheet
newspapers or even in the broadcast media like radio and television.
