Exercises On Analysis of Functions
II. Sketch a possible graph of the function g having the following characteristics.
− g is continuous everywhere
− g(−4) = −3, g(0) = 0, g(3) = 2
− g 0 (−4) = 0, g 0 (3) = 0, g 0 (x) > 0 when x < −4, g 0 (x) > 0 when −4 < x < 3, g 0 (x) < 0 when x > 3
− g 00 (−4) does not exist, g 00 (0) = 0, g 00 (x) < 0 when x < −4, g 00 (x) > 0 when −4 < x < 0, g 00 (x) < 0
when x > 0
III. Sketch a possible graph of the function h if the graphs below are the graphs of h0 . (Refer to the lecture
notes for the graphs.)
IV. 1. If f (x) = ax3 + bx2 + cx + d, determine a, b, c, d so that f will have a relative extremum point
at P (0, 3) and a point of inflection at Q(1, −1).
2. Show that a polynomial function of degree three has exactly one point of inflection.
3. Prove that if f is increasing on [a, b] and if g is increasing on [f (a), f (b)], then if g ◦ f exists on
[a, b], g ◦ f is increasing on [a, b].
4. Suppose f (x) = xr − rx + 1 where r ∈ R, r > 0, and r 6= 1. Prove that
a. if 0 < r < 1, then f has a relative maximum at 1.
b. if r > 1, then f has a relative minimum at 1.

5. Show that tan x > x for 0 < x < . [HINT: Consider f (x) = tan x − x.]
