Helwan University Soil Mechanics 2nd Year Architecture

Fac. Of Fine Arts Sheet (1), 3-phase diagram Year 2023

1 – A wet sample has a volume of 15 cm3 and weighs 25 gm. The weight
of the sample after drying was 18.2 gm. Find n, e, dry , wet, sat, sub,
(Gs=2.7).

2 – The weight of a soil sample is 300 gm and its volume is 168 cm 3 .The
water content is 25% and the specific gravity is 2.68. Draw the 3-phase
diagram and find the volume of air voids, void ratio and degree of
saturation.

3 – In a clay sample the void ratio is 0.73 and the specific gravity of the
particles is 2.7. If the voids are saturated by 92%. Find bulk density, the
dry density and the percentage of water content. Draw the 3-phase
diagram taking Vt= 1 m3 . What would be the water content for complete
saturation. If the void ratio is the same?

4 – a partially saturated sample of soil from an earth fill had a natural

moisture content of 20% and bulk density of 2 gm/cm 3 assume Gs=2.7.
Compute the degree of saturation and the void ratio. If later the soil gets
saturated determine its unit weight and porosity.

5 – An undisturbed sample of clay was tested in the laboratory and the the
following results obtained:
Specific gravity = 2.7
Mass of sample when wet = 220 gm
Mass of sample when dry = 128 gm
Calculate the total volume and the porosity of the sample if it is :
(a) 100% saturated
(b) 75% saturated
