During pregnancy, if your body is unable to produce enough insulin, you may develop a

condition known as gestational diabetes. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by your pancreas. It
functions similarly to a key, allowing blood sugar to enter cells in your body so that it can be used as a
source of energy. When you are pregnant, your body produces more hormones than usual and goes
through a number of additional changes, including an increase in weight. Insulin resistance is a disorder
that develops as a result of these changes, in which the cells of your body become less responsive to the
hormone insulin. The requirement for insulin in your body goes up when you have insulin resistance.
