The DWDM 1830 PSS-8, 1830 PSS-16II, 1830 PSS-16, and 1830 PSS-32 shelves are
tunable and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers. They perform lambda or
Optical Channel switching in any network topology. These shelves also enable flexible
mesh WDM networking, with full network accessibility and reconfigurability.
The 1830 PSS-36 and 1830 PSS-64 shelves represent Nokia OTH switches. Their
agnostic matrix provides a switching capability with up to 3.8 terabits per second, with
maximum flexibility and capacity capability. 100G single carrier coherent technology
provides access to the highest capacity and reach per fiber possible.
The 1830 PSS converged architecture integrates OTN switching and WDM functionality
into one network element. This results in granularity and Lambda, port and sub-port level,
and therefore enables the highest filling factor per Lambda.

1830 PSS product System profile

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

System profile
Introduction
An 1830 PSS Photonic NE, contains 1830 PSS-4, 1830 PSS-8, 1830 PSS-16II,
1830 PSS-16, 1830 PSS-24x and/or 1830 PSS-32 shelves.
The switching compound, also referred to as the OCS compound, is an 1830 PSS
Switching NE, containing 1830 PSS-36 and/or 1830 PSS-64 shelves.
An 1830 PSS network node is composed of either:
• one photonic compound or
• one switching compound or
• one photonic compound and one switching compound (converged node).
Each compound is built out of exactly one main shelf and optional expansion shelves.
The main shelf is identified by setting a particular reserved shelf identification number
(ShelfId).
The shelf number settings are used to unambiguously define:
• whether a shelf is a main shelf or an expansion shelf
• that the application type of the shelf is that of a photonic compound or of a switching
compound
• a shelf number that uniquely identifies the shelf within the compound.
For a photonic compound consisting of multiple 1830 PSS-8 and/or 1830 PSS-16II and/or
1830 PSS-24x and/or 1830 PSS-16 and/or 1830 PSS-32 shelves, the management
communication occurs through a single photonic main shelf.
For a switching compound consisting of multiple 1830 PSS-36, and/or 1830 PSS-64
shelves, the management communication occurs through a single switching main shelf.
Hardware details, configurations, and other information associated with a switching
compound is referred to as 1830 PSS - OCS application.
The system supports in-service expansion of a network element by adding additional
shelves to the node:
• A photonic node with an 1830 PSS-4 main shelf can be extended by adding
1830 PSS-4 expansion shelves.
• A photonic node with 1830 PSS-16 main shelf can be extended by adding
1830 PSS-16 expansion shelves.
• A photonic node with 1830 PSS-8 main shelf can be extended by adding 1830 PSS-8
expansion shelves.
• A photonic node with 1830 PSS-16II main shelf can be extended by adding
1830 PSS-16II expansion shelves.

• A photonic node with 1830 PSS-24x main shelf can be extended by adding
1830 PSS-24x or any photonic shelf as expansion shelves (except 1830 PSS-4).
• A photonic node with 1830 PSS-32 main shelf can be extended by adding
1830 PSS-32 1830 PSS-16, 1830 PSS-16II, 1830 PSS-8, and 1830 PSS-24x (if
1830 PSS-32 hosts a High-performance Equipment Controller (32EC2) expansion
shelves.
• A photonic node with an 1830 PSS-16, or 1830 PSS-32 main shelf can be extended by
adding an 1830 PSS-36 or 1830 PSS-64 switching main shelf (OCS application).
Then further 1830 PSS-36 or 1830 PSS-64 expansion shelves for switching can be
added.
• A switching node with an 1830 PSS-36 or 1830 PSS-64 main shelf can be extended
by adding further 1830 PSS-36 or 1830 PSS-64 shelves (“multi-shelf switching NE”).
• A switching node with an 1830 PSS-36 or 1830 PSS-64 main shelf can be extended
by uplinks to an 1830 PSS-32 photonic main shelf in a photonic node. Then further
1830 PSS-32 and 1830 PSS-16 expansion shelves can be added to the photonic
(converged) node. This enables traffic management and control between the switching
and photonic compounds of the node.

Key innovations of the 1830 PSS
The 1830 PSS platform shelves provide innovations in both, WDM optic and OCS
switching applications.
Starting with Release 9.0, Node scalability is implemented for 1830 PSS. Node scalability
refers to the ability of the system to combine up to four SWDM NEs into one cluster. In
this case, multiple NEs participate in a “cluster” arrangement with one common photonic
master shelf, while each NE remains independent and is managed separately, through its
own management interface.
For more information, refer to the 1830 PSS Product Information and Planning Guide.

Customer benefits
From a WDM perspective, the following advantages are the most important:
• Zero-touch (“touchless”) transparent photonic networking/pure photonic traffic
processing
• Support of 10G/40G/100G/200G wavelengths for increasing service demands
• Multi-degree nodes for meshed topologies (1830 PSS-32, 1830 PSS-16,
1830 PSS-16II, and 1830 PSS-8)
• End-to-end wavelength provisioning by network operations center (NOC)
• No manual intervention at the network element (NE)
• Extended photonic operations, administration, and maintenance (OAM) and
restoration capabilities
• Integrated any-type client interfaces

Photonic service assurance

The 1830 PSS platform delivers service assurance through integrated Wavelength Tracker
optical layer management. Wavelength Tracker optical layer management delivers

Transformation Solution, a key component of the Nokia High Leverage Network ™
architecture in combination with the Nokia 7750 Service Router.
The 1830 PSS provides integrated photonic applications
(Regional/Metro/Core/Aggregation/Access CWDM/DWDM, point-to-point links and
photonic-based OCh switching) with optical core switching (electrical bandwidth
management and service grooming on sub-lambda granularity) with the 1830 PSS-64,
1830 PSS-36, 1830 PSS-32, 1830 PSS-16, 1830 PSS-24x, 1830 PSS-16II, and
1830 PSS-8 shelf types.

IP traffic grooming options

Flexible IP traffic grooming options at the OTN layer, including port-level and
sub-port-level grooming, enable efficient core-router traffic offload onto the optical
network and support scaling of the IP backbone.

Low-cost traffic transport

Designed to ensure efficient bandwidth management and traffic forwarding at the most
economical transport layer, the 1830 PSS meets the challenge of explosive service growth
by facilitating traffic transport at the lowest cost per bit - while ensuring the highest
availability and resiliency for service quality assurance. The advanced GMPLS-based
automation capabilities expand operational efficiencies across the optical and IP layers
and help minimize service providers' total cost of ownership (TCO).

GMPLS control plane
The 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) enables automated operations and resilience
with an integrated Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) control plane.
The 1830 PSS also increases network monetization by reducing the resources required for
protection and freeing bandwidth for revenue-producing traffic.

Green networking
With the use of technology innovations, 1830 PSS brings a number of eco-benefits in
addition to CAPEX and OPEX advantages. Specifically, it provides for:
• Lower network power consumption as the platform manages traffic at the most
economical transport layer by combining silicon innovation, OTN bandwidth
management capabilities and GMPLS-enabled cross layer intelligence for resource
optimization
• Delegation of several management processes to the control plane for automation
including discovery processes for network topology, resources and services,
end-to-end connection routing, flow-through service provisioning, and mesh
restoration
• Intelligent restoration mechanisms boosting network reliability, allowing network
failures and fiber cuts to be accumulated and fixed in batches instead of one at a time.
This allowance for planned network maintenance activities reduces the cost of on-site
maintenance as well as travel-related CO2 emissions
• Fewer site visits for provisioning
• A smaller footprint
• “Green” FPGA images – for port groups which are not used, an image is loaded that
causes nearly no power consumption
• Pluggable optical modules that only need to be installed if in use or planned to go into
use

The Optical Transport Network (OTN) approach

1830 PSS helps network providers to introduce the scalable, unified photonic and
electronic transport networking as defined in the Optical Transport Network (OTN)
hierarchy.

The Optical Data Unit (ODU) provides end-to-end bandwidth management for a
sub-wavelength signal in the electronic domain. The ODU is a fixed-sized container with
in-band OAM tools for quality supervision and SLA assurance. The ODU functions as
primary bearer for client traffic.
Higher-order ODU (HO-ODU) transparently carries multiple (multiplexed) lower-order
ODUs which can transport client signal rates in container sizes from 1.25 Gb/s to 100
Gb/s.

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

1830 PSS-24x
Description
The 1830 PSS-24x supports next-generation wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)
multiservice packet-optical transport from access to core. The scalable 1830 PSS with
high-performance 100G and 200G transport drives lower total cost of ownership (TCO)
and extends network life cycles.
The 1830 PSS-24x platform is optimized for core packet/optical transport network (OTN)
switching applications, placing industry-leading electrical switching scale at
international/national, regional and metro core network locations. It provides the scale
and efficiency required to support an evolution to 100G services, enabling continued
revenue streams as customers demand more bandwidth and enterprises move toward
100G connectivity between their routers and data centers. With initial support for 9.6 Tb/s
of electrical switching capacity in a single shelf, 19.2 Tb/s per rack, together with
400G-capable cards, the 1830 PSS-24x offers industry-leading OTN and packet switch
scale.
This new level of switching scale is enabled by intelligent electrical fabric design coupled
with transport wavelength cards powered by the Photonic Service Engine 2 (PSE-2), and
services cards with high client port density. Designed to support 48 Tb/s of electrical
switching capacity in a single rack, together with terabit-capable card slots, the 1830
PSS-24x also offers a network evolution path to keep up with bandwidth demands.
The 1830 PSS offers generalized multiprotocol label switching/automatically switched
optical network (GMPLS/ASON) control plane intelligence for added-value applications
such as advanced restoration, resource virtualization, and cross-layer automation.
Providing seamless integration into existing assets, this enables highly resilient transport
and dynamic bandwidth provisioning across multiple transport networking layers for the
highest network efficiency.

1830 PSS-24x shelf

The 1830 PSS-24x shelf is a central office shelf providing a 24 IO slots high-capacity and
high-scalability OTN switching platform.
The 1830 PSS-24x shelf provides front access for the matrix, controller, and I/O cards
and rear access for power, timing and housekeeping interfaces. This arrangement allows a
clean separation of traffic fibers and installation cables.

element alarms alphabetically. This chapter provides a detailed description of each
alarm or condition, including a brief overview of important information, and a
reference to trouble-clearing procedures.
Additionally, Appendix A: Alarm lists is alphabetically ordered according to the
alarm identifier and provides lists of NE alarms, with a reference to the corresponding
detailed alarm descriptions in Chapter 2 - Network element alarms. This provides a
second entry point to trouble-clearing, when the alarm identifier (mnemonic) is
known.
• Clear the alarms using Chapter 3: Trouble-clearing procedures. Links to the
specific trouble-clearing procedure are provided for each alarm in Chapter 2 -
Network element alarms. There is a list of trouble-clearing procedures in the front
matter that can be used if the operator wants a shortcut to that information.
• Further trouble-clearing reference is provided in Appendix B: Alarm source list,
which lists the cards supported for each alarm/condition type.

Overview
Purpose
This section provides an overview of the main 1830 PSS user interfaces used for
provisioning and operations. Additional related software applications are described in
Chapter 4, “Related software tool support”.

1830 PSS user interfaces

The 1830 PSS user interfaces are:
• 1830 PSS Zero Installation Craft Terminal (ZIC) - a graphical user interface (GUI)
allowing the user to interact with the NE
• 1830 PSS WebUI - provides web-based access to the NE. For 1830 PSS Release 9.0
the WebUI interface is started from within the 1830 PSS for managing the WDM
application of the NE.
• Transaction Language 1 (TL1) interface - provides command and response messages
in Direct Input Command Entry mode
• Command Line Interface (CLI) - provides a line-oriented user interface accessed
using a terminal device connected to the network element.
Both the 1830 PSS ZIC and WebUI applications have a graphical user interface (GUI)
allowing the user to interact with the NE through visual and graphical elements along
with text navigation representing the information and actions available to the user.
Compared to the CLI and the TL1 interfaces which require numerous commands to be
typed on the keyboard, the 1830 PSS ZIC and WebUI applications allow greater
efficiency and ease of use through their respective GUIs.

Overview
Purpose
This section describes the basic functions of the 1830 PSS ZIC .

Relationship between 1830 PSS ZIC and the WebUI

The Navigation Pane of the 1830 PSS ZIC Management Window allows the user to
navigate through the NE equipment in a hierarchical fashion from the system level down
to the port level and select a single entity from the hierarchy. The navigation panel
provides the equipment selection mechanism for all the NE management functions
supported. The selection on the NE Equipment Tree is always in sync with the
information displayed in the display pane.
If WDM application is to be handled you have to simple click on the WDM tab on top of
the frame. Then the WebUI is opened in the ZIC browser.
Note: Once opened all WebUI functions are available.

Relationship between 1830 PSS ZIC and TL1

System administration is performed through 1830 PSS ZIC and Transaction Language 1
(TL1). TL1/TL1DAT - Enter Transaction Language 1 (TL1) commands with the
assistance of the TL1 Direct Access Terminal (TL1DAT) interface. Certain commands
that are unavailable through the 1830 PSS ZIC may be performed with TL1DAT.

General information
1830 PSS ZIC
The 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) Zero Installation Craft Terminal (ZIC) is a web
interface embedded in the NE software. As it does not require any special installation, it is
called 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) Zero Installation Craft Terminal (ZIC), or
short 1830 PSS ZIC because it is especially used to configure NE units.
The 1830 PSS ZIC runs as a Java Application, which requires as a prerequisite a Java
runtime environment to be installed on the ZIC host. The Java Application is loaded from
the NE via https requests.
The Java ™ version running on the 1830 PSS ZIC PC must be Java ™ version 1.6.0_31 or
higher. You can verify the used version using http://www.java.com/verify/.

1830 PSS ZIC functions

The 1830 PSS ZIC is capable of performing the following:
• Supports general management functions such as port configuration, resets, etc.
• Supports the configuration management of the NE
• Supports the alarm handling and the performance monitoring (PM) of the NE.

1830 PSS ZIC User Assistance

The 1830 PSS ZIC User Assistance is an HTML-based context-sensitive online help.
When clicking on the help button on a screen either a screen description or a task
description or both variants are displayed.
Note: The mapping of the User Assistance to the 1830 PSS ZIC screens is derived
from TL1 command names because most of the ZIC screens represent a specificTL1
command. For some special cases it could happen that the help for more than one
screen will be displayed. So you have to select the correct description on the left
under descriptions.

on the personal computer on which the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) Zero
Installation Craft Terminal (ZIC) is running.

Required web browser

For the User Assistance functionality of the application a weblication is used that displays
information in HTML. Therefore the off-the-shelf browsers Mozilla Firefox, or Internet
Explorer are recommended. It is recommended only to use the 32 bit versions of the
browsers.
The full functionality (mixed OCS and WDM application) of the 1830 Photonic Service
Switch (PSS) Zero Installation Craft Terminal (ZIC) requires that Internet Explorer 11 (or
newer) is installed on your PC. This provided, the 1830 PSS ZIC may be run with Mozilla
Firefox version 3.0 (or newer), too.
Note: For usage restricted to OCS application only (no WebUI support for WDM
application), Internet Explorer 7.0 (or newer), or Mozilla Firefox version 3.0 (or
newer) is sufficient. In that case the attempt to activate the WebUI via the WDM tab
will fail with an error message.
The browser to be used must be set the default browser on the personal computer on
which the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) Zero Installation Craft Terminal (ZIC) is
running.

1830 Photonic Service Switch web user interface (WebUI)

functions and features
Description
The 1830 Photonic Service Switch web user interface (WebUI) provides web-based
access to the network element (NE). The WebUI interface is accessed using Internet
Explorer running on a computer that is connected via Ethernet to the NE, either directly
or over a LAN. The WebUI supports provisioning, administration, performance
monitoring, and display of alarms and conditions from the NE. It provides an intuitive,
easy-to-use tool to assist in the initial installation and troubleshooting of NEs.
The 1830 PSS WebUI interface provides a graphical user interface to the node software
using HTML. The application runs on the NE and is controlled and viewed through a
standard web browser that is provided by the PC. The WebUI displays a physical view of
the NE topology. This view includes the shelves, cards and ports applicable to fiber
connection management, as well as the existing fiber connections between ports on the
NE.
The WebUI does not run the full 1830 PSS features. The CIT port only provides basic NE
management (for local and remote management via SNMP). IP Routing functions have to
be configured so that all NEs intended to be managed, are reachable from the local NE. In
other words, IP applications from any external DCN network will work only when there
is full IP reach capability to every GNE and RNE in the network.

TL1 interface

Overview
TL1 interface
The TL1 interface provides command and response messages available for the current
release of the NE. These messages consist of input commands, command output response
(successful and unsuccessful) messages, acknowledgement output messages, and
autonomous output messages.
TL1 is a state-less protocol. That means, a TL1 command is either accepted by the system
and processed, or it is denied. If the command is accepted, the system will perform the
requested actions and return responses and autonomous messages as defined for the
command. Subsequent TL1 commands will be processed solely on the current systems'
status, independent of the TL1 commands which led to this status.

TL1 command entry

Network and User access is provided through TCP/IP on the CIT port on the Equipment
Controller (EC) in the main shelf and the OAMP LAN ports of the FLC and Matrix
boards.
The Direct Input Command Entry mode is the only command entry method. In Direct
Input Command Entry mode, commands are entered in their entirety by the user.

TL1 Commands
TL1 commands are described in the respective TL1 Commands and Messages Guides.
Each command description consists of the following subsections:
• Command Header - consists of the command code and name.
• Purpose - provides information on the function of the command.
• Input Format - shows the command TL1 input syntax of the command.
• Input Parameters - describes the input parameters and parameter values that can be
used with the command.
• Successful Response Format - shows the normal (successful) response format for the
command.
• Output Parameters - describes the output parameters and parameter values shown in
the output response message, if any,
• Unsuccessful Response Format - shows the error (unsuccessful) response format for
the command.

Command Line Interface (CLI)

Overview
CLI interface
The Command Line Interface (CLI) is a line-oriented user interface that runs on the
network element. The user access the CLI using a terminal device connected to the
network element. The CLI provides commands that allow the user to configure, manage,
and monitor the network element, the network element interfaces, and the services
running on the network element.

CLI command structure

Most of the CLI commands are grouped by function into the following major hierarchical
categories:
• config - Commands in the config hierarchy allow the user to configure the network
element and network services.
• show - Commands in the show hierarchy allow the user to view the current network
element configuration.
• tools - Commands in the tools hierarchy provide miscellaneous tools useful in using
the CLI.
Within each category, the commands are grouped hierarchically by subcategory. For
example, all of the commands used to configure interfaces are grouped under the config
interface hierarchy. In addition to the config and show hierarchies, other global
commands are also available from the root level of the CLI.

1830 Engineering and Planning Tool

Overview of the 1830 PSS Engineering and Planning Tool
The 1830 PSS Engineering and Planning Tool (EPT) is a software tool for automated
design and planning of photonic networks based on the 1830 PSS portfolio of WDM
products. The EPT is one key component of Nokia's Zero Touch Photonics networking
innovation, which enables easier operations, accelerated time-to-market and optimized
total cost of ownership (TCO) of wavelength services.
The EPT runs on a windows-based platform and employs a graphical user interface (GUI)
to simplify the network design process. EPT integration with the 1830 PSS management
systems and WaveTracker OA&M support both initial system turn-up as well as
incremental network growth.
Purpose of the 1830 PSS Engineering and Planning Tool
The EPT is used for network planning, design, installation and commissioning as

matched 1830 PSS release. The feature set of the 1830 PSS is available for users within
the EPT design environment.
Note: The 1830 Engineering and Planning (EPT) tool should be used to design the
equipment and commissioning data for the network. It is important that traffic (real
and virtual) be entered into the EPT design before the network design is complete and
before the commissioning file is created, as traffic type and amount affects choices
such as inclusion of the optional egress Line Driver, DCM Type, power targets for the
Software Control of Transmission (SCOT), and so on. In particular, factors such as
the type of Optical Transponder (OT), whether alien optics interfaces would be used,
and whether OPS protection is needed for demands in the future should be considered
at design time, and virtual demands with each type should be entered between every
two nodes where this type of traffic will be needed in the future. New traffic designs
can be added after the network is deployed, but may require power adjustments,
equipment additions, or equipment type changes. Equipment additions and type
changes may be service affecting.

1350 Optical Management System (1350 OMS)

Overview
The Nokia 1350 OMS is the Nokia converged and unified network management system.
It manages the complete portfolio of Nokia's active network elements (NEs) and it
maintains the complete portfolio of Nokia's legacy NEs. The Nokia 1350 OMS provides
an integrated and end-to-end element, network, service, and business management
solution for Nokia's network elements (NEs).

Nokia 1350 OMS and management layer support

The Nokia 1350 OMS supports several management layers. It can accommodate and
grow with a customer's optical network.
• The Element Management Layer, or EML, provides the functionality that is needed to
access any Nokia supported network elements (NEs) that are deployed in a customer
network. The EML provides a single access point for communication with an NE and
the physical resources of a network.
• The Network Management Layer, or NML, provides the functionality that is needed
to commission, provision, and supervise the network that is deployed in a customer
premise.
• The Service Management Layer, or SML, provides the functionality that is needed to
commission, provision, and supervise external networks that customer deploys to its
end users or to its customers.
• The Business Management Layer or BML provide to manage the overall sales activity
such as return on investment, system decision support, market analysis and so on.
The Nokia 1350 OMS fulfills the EML and NML Level 1 with modular software
architecture where each module is a specialized application. Network technology-specific
applications and generic application options can be independently installed in the Nokia
1350 OMS according to a customer's needs.

Nokia 1350 OMS and technology support

The Nokia 1350 OMS provides comprehensive management capabilities across Level 1
TDM (SDH/SONET), Level 2 data (Ethernet and MPLS-TP), OTN and photonic , and
microwave (TDM and Ethernet) technologies.
In addition, the integrated features of the Nokia 1350 OMS and its applications are
focused on the network management of GMPLS/control-plane based domains that are
deployed in a number of TDM networks for Optical Transport Network (OTN) and
photonic applications.

Nokia 1350 OMS gives customers continuity in the network supervision and control
along the network transformation processes, which today develop along different
coordinates.
The Nokia 1350 OMS management capability extends from customer premises to
backbone to provide customers with an end-to-end service oriented to have full control of
the network technology.

Nokia 1350 OMS and the web

The Nokia 1350 OMS user interface is browser-based, which means that it supports
standard web features such as bookmarks, back, forward, reload, and print.
The Nokia 1350 OMS Web Portal is the central access point for administrators and users
to enter the Nokia 1350 OMS, be authenticated, and access the management applications
through its GUI. The Web Portal enables administrators and users to view all Nokia 1350
OMS applications and manages navigation between the subsystem components. The
Nokia 1350 OMS GUI also provides various methods of navigation such as menus, icons,
and a left tree navigation area between applications and tools. The Nokia 1350 OMS GUI
encompasses all the functions in order to facilitate the end to end provisioning based on
each technology.

Nokia 1350 OMS applications

Applications, either as new options added onto the system or as software upgrades, can be
installed without stopping the already established functions, having a high confidence that
the newly installed application at no time is disrupting the customer operation workflow.
The applications interworking is based on a client-sever model, with a strong backward
compatibility: the server is the owner of the managed technology layer while the client is
the user of the infrastructure provided by the technology layer. Each application fully
owns its own database and each application database is referred to without being
duplicated in the overall Nokia 1350 OMS system. To avoid any functional duplication
within the architecture when the applications co-exist, the Nokia 1350 OMS envisages
common and generic functions that are bundled into centralized software components,
which include, but is not limited to, Fault Management, Performance Management,
Element Management, and security.
The Nokia 1350 OMS applications set, can be divided in two groups:
• Core applications:

functions that are required to manage the deployed network, it requires the Nokia
1350 OMS Platform application management system to be deployed.
– SDH services management (1350 OMS SDH) - provides the Synchronous Digital
Hierarchy (SDH) network management layer along with provisioning, alarm
correlation, and PM correlation capabilities. The Nokia 1350 OMS SDH functions
as a client for the 1350 OMS OTN application and as a server for the 1350 OMS
PKT application.
– Ethernet services including MPLS-TP management (1350 OMS PKT) - The
Nokia 1350 OMS PKT application provides Ethernet network management layer
support along with provisioning, alarm correlation, and historical PM data
services. Ethernet services include Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS),
Multiprotocol Label Switching-Transport Profile (MPLS-TP ), bridging,
connection-oriented traffic, and packet rings.

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Key Management Tool (KMT)

Overview
The 1830 Photonic Service Switch Key Management Tool (KMT) provides a solution for
Enterprise and Service providers to centralize security and separate network management
from security management tasks. This is done with a proxy approach and 2 user classes:
Administrator and User. KMT is based on the FIPS standard operating procedures, which
allows the functions to be split so that Users manage security material and Administrators
setup the environment for Users to manage the keys.
Automated scheduled Encryption key and Well Known Answer Test (WKAT) rotations
allow for enhanced security while decreasing operational expenditures. Where Encryption
Keys are often managed by separate CLI or craft interfaces, KMT consolidates key
management and overall network security and gives the operator the option to manually
or automatically manage key encryption as is required to meet their security policies.
The 1830 PSS KMT is a web-base application that stores encryption circuit and the
associated customer key rotation security policies in a dedicated database. End users
provision key rotation schedules and monitor their encryption circuits to meet the security
policies of their business. Administrators manage the circuit provisioning.
The 1830 PSS KMT also collects alarm and performance data realter to the encryption
circuits that have been provisioned.

Benefits
The 1830 PSS KMT provides the following benefits:
• FIPS 140-2 operating architecture with configuration tasks separated from security
tasks
• TLS or SSL encryption for user interactions, and all software modules
communications
• Database storage of user and NE data
• Fault Management and display of real-time and historical alarms and performance
data
• A Google Maps web based console to monitor and manage all nodes and links across
an enterprise or service provider network.
• A real-time dashboard display of security related alarms and performance metrics.
• Network-level automated key management and rotation.
• Scheduled and on-demand key rotation and well-known answer test.

Introduction
Automatic Pre-emphasis Adjustment (APA) is an algorithm to set and optimize the end to
end transmission channel by channel. APA is consisting in tuning the channel power from
a direct measurement of the performance provided by the transponder itself. The
difference in performance between the real bit-error-rate (BER) and the expected one
(target BER) will be used to tune the channel power until the difference in between the
measured BER and the target one goes to zero.

Supported Card Types

The APA is not specific to the shelf type. The 1830 PSS APA functions with 1830 PSS
NEs that contain the following cards:

1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) CDC-F Connection

Verification Tool (CVT)
Overview
The 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) CDC-F Connection Verification Tool (CVT) is a
program that runs on a personal computer and executes optical tests on the Colorless,
Directionless, Contentionless, Flexible Grid (ready) ROADM node. The tests consist of
fiber path checks within the node to verify that the connections between packs and to and
from the fiber shuffle module have been made correctly. The CVT uses Command Line
Interface commands to interact with the node. The three main tests provided are as
follows:
• Fiber shuffle module (MSH8-FSM) verification tests to verify all paths through the
MSH8-FSM are intact within acceptable optical insertion loss.
• New MCS Add/Drop block tests to verify the loss of paths through and functionality
of the MCS8-16 multi-cast switch pack, verify the connection between the
AAR-8A(s) and the MCS8-16, and verify the AAR-8A(s) is connected correctly to the
MSH8-FSM. Paths to already installed degree equipment are checked. Measured path
losses are checked against optical insertion loss limits.
• New degree installation tests to verify the equipment for a new degree is connected
correctly to the MSH8-FSM, validate paths to already installed out-of-service
equipment in the node, and check the losses of these paths are within acceptable
optical insertion loss limits.

Tests
The CVT provides a GUI for the user to select options and the tests to be run, and input
required information for the tests. The CVT outputs a progress log and outputs a report
for each test section completed.
The tests are intended for verifying connections on a node where no services have been
provisioned. Furthermore, while tests are being performed, no users should make
provisioning changes outside of the tool. Only one instance of the tool should be running
on any PC, and the tool should not be run from different PCs into the same NE at the
same time. It is strongly advised to keep the PC running the test connected to the network
element throughout the test execution. If connection fails during the test, the Audit
function should be run to verify any equipment that may have been left in an invalid state
so that these can be manually reverted.

User interface mode

When running the verification tool, the network element supports Normal and Secure user
interface modes.

User types
The tool is intended for Admin and Service users only. All other user types will be
rejected by the tool. All users must have their passwords set. For new accounts, users are
prompted to change their passwords and those password updates must be done outside of
the tool and prior to running the tool. Logging in via the tool with a user account that has
an expired password will cause the tool to appear to hang.

Reports
The tool generates reports with the results of each test. These reports are stored in files
named in a format as follows: {Test Name}_{NE IP Address}_{Report Tag}.csv. The user
can specify the Report Tag via the GUI or leave it blank. The Report Tag should not
include the .csv file extension, the tool adds the extension automatically. The user can
also specify the folder on the PC where the file will be saved. The .csv file can be opened
with Microsoft Excel and saved as .xls as desired.
Note: Report files should not be left open in Excel when the tool is run.
