For this chapter report we will focus on chapter 3 and the first Biblical principle that

stood out to me in this chapter is the principle of submission to God. The author calls it our

common calling as Christians. He gives us three pictures of submission — like a wife, like a

child, and like a slave. All three, the author exhorts, are our first and foremost identity and so it

transcends our temporary positions whether we are rich or poor, male or female, young or old,

with authority or under authority, all of us should submit to the authority of God.

The second Biblical principle that clings to me is the call to nurture. The author explains

that those who are put in authority over others should focus on nurturing intentions and actions

toward the people God placed in their care. We are to deny the temptation of “ruling over” these

relationships but instead look for the welfare and well-being of the people we have. The closing

of this section of the chapter is also interesting — the author emphasizes the words “your own”.

This implies that we are responsible for our people, those who are in our circle. This is very

important for the context of marriage, parenting, and also governmental aspects of life.

To put these two principles in practice for my own life, first, I need to improve on my

integrity in terms of living and showing my family of my theology. I was convicted when the

author wrote “if the kids should not backtalk to parents, then parents should not yell at kids”.

This makes perfect sense to me as I am a servant of God as much as my children and wife are.

Second, I should start asking people’s opinions and consider them before deciding on my own.

Especialy if my decision would affect them. I am taking this in the context of family. Third and

lastly, I am learning to “mentor” my own family, specially my kids. I do recognise that as

parents, we have a tendency to “lord it over them” instead of actually having a relationship with

them that builds and nurtures them.

So my prayer is that God would convict me when I get self-serving and that He would

remind me to have a humble heart before others, specially my family. Praise the Lord for the
people He put in my life. I recognize that I am to influence them in a good and godly way and

they too influence me the same. God uses these people to spur me, convict me, remind me, and

teach me of the truth of His Word in my life, and I pray that He will use me to do the same for

them. And I also pray that during the times I need to speak up the Word of God, that I would

have courage and faith in my heart to do so. Amen.
