So and Such (intensifiers)

English is so easy that you can learn it everywhere!

So and such are two simple words that we use in our everyday
speech, but they also can express intense (and sometimes crazy)
ideas and facts.
Do you know how to combine them with adjectives, adverbs,
nouns and results? Today we are going to learn how to use
these words correctly.

1 Function of so
So and such are used as intensifiers when we use them with adjectives, adverbs
and attributes for nouns. They can also express a result when we add the word
that.

Let’s focus on so.

“So” means “very”.

It intensifies
adjectives and adverbs.

Examples:

She’s so intelligent. (Adjective)

She dances so gracefully. (Adverb)

So is used with quantifiers (many, much, few, little) even if there is a noun:
I have so many friends.
My dad has so much money.

2 Function of such

What about such?

“Such” is used in front of the adjective
“Such” also means “very”.
of a noun. It intensifies attributes of
nouns.
Examples:
That was such a* funny movie. (Adjective and noun)
*We add a/an when the noun is singular.
They are such talented actors. (Adjective and noun)

Remember that we use such before adjective + noun.

3 That for results

So… + that… and such… + that express a cause and effect.

In this case, that expresses the result. Observe the example:

It’s such a great movie that I’ve watched it six times.

The actors were so good that the film won two Oscars.

3 Conclusions
This topic is so easy, isn’t it? Now you can practice with your own examples
and the rest of the exercises of the module. Remember that you can ask
your teacher about any doubt you have about so, such and that.
