Time Element: 2 hours

ANSWERS TO PROBLEM SOLVING:

Problem 1: __________________________________________
Problem 2: __________________________________________
Problem 3: __________________________________________
Problem 4: __________________________________________
Problem 5: __________________________________________

PROBLEM 1:
A distance of 1500 m was measured with a 20 m chain. After the measurement
chain was found to be 80 mm longer. If the length of chain was perfectly correct
while starting measurement, what is the true length of the line measured, in
meters, in whole number?
Please add the last two digits of your student number to the distance
(say your last 2 digits is 32. Use 1532m instead of 1500m distance. Then
solve the problem using this new value.)

PROBLEM 2:
To measure a base line, a steel tape 30 m long, standardized at 15º C with a
pull of 80 N was used. Find the correction per tape length (meters per chain
length), if the temperature at the time of measurement is 25º C and the pull
exerted is 150 N.
Take Youngs modulus E = 2 x 10^5 N/mm2 and coefficient of thermal
expansion = 11.2 x 10^-6 /°C. Cross-sectional area of tape is 8 mm2.
Answer in 5 decimal places.
Please add the last two digits of your student number to the force (say
your last 2 digits is 32. Use 150N instead of 182N force. Then solve the
problem using this new value.)

PROBLEM 3:
Let’s say we measured 2306.34m distance by a steel tape made of 7kg tensile
force, the pull applied to the tape was noted as 10kg in the field. And we are
asked to work out the correct distance if the sectional area of the tape is 0.08
sq.cm., and E = 21 x 10^5 kg/sq.cm.
Answers in meters, in 3 decimal places.
Please add the last two digits of your student number to the distance
(say your last 2 digits is 32. Use 2306.34m instead of 2338.34m distance.
Then solve the problem using this new value.)

PROBLEM 4:
When the temperature was 48 deg C, the measured distance from B to C was
318m. The steel tape used has a standard length at 20 deg C with a coefficient
of thermal expansion of 0.0000116 per deg C. Find the correct distance of BC
in meters, in 3 decimal places.
Please add the last two digits of your student number to the distance Did you cheat in this exam? [Yes / No] _____________
(say your last 2 digits is 32. Use 318m instead of 350m distance. Then Are you sure? [Yes / No] ________________________
solve the problem using this new value.)
