PHILOSOPHY

GROUP 1
LESSON 1 : WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY?

Pertains to an system of organized thoughts

It comes from the two Greek words philos that means


"love" and sophia which means "wisdom".

The ancient Greek used this term to refer to love of


wisdom.
Philosophy itself is a distinct area of
knowledge with its own goals, concerns,
and way of doing things. It is divided into
branches that deals with particular
aspect of life or phenomena.
AESTHETICS

The philosophy which deals with


beauty and make things beautiful.

LOGIC

The branch of philosophy which deals


with correct reasoning.

EPISTEMOLOGY

Discusses the nature of knowledge and knowing.


ETHICS

The branch that deals with moral


questions and dilemmas.

METAPHYSICS

Deals with questions regrading


reality and existence.

POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY

Studies governments, deals with questions of justice,


power, rights and obligations of citizens
DOING PHILOSOPHY?

It is engaging oneself in the “matters of utility”


and methodologies to eliminate any practical
problems or abstract ideas.
HOLISTIC THINKING VS PARTIAL THINKING

Holistic thinking refers to the perspective that considers large


scale patterns systems. It requires an individual to to have an
open mindset and an ability to get general sense or
impression regarding a situation.

Partial Thinking focuses on specific aspect of situation. The


partial view is important component of analytical thinking as
individual focuses on certain areas of a problem in order to
understand it.
REFLECTION

Requires a person to be willing to examine one’s thoughts, feelings,


and actions, and learn more about one’s life and experiences.

EXAMPLES:

From the moment you wake up in the morning, you already reflect upon the
course of actions that you plan to do for the day. This enables you to set your
daily goals and set you on thinking of ways on how to achieve them.

When buying clothes, you start asking questions to yourself of why you consider
buying the T-shirt you are holding. You probably start thinking if it will fit you or
will you look good on that color. Do you even need to buy that new T-shirt?
What are the practical uses of Doing Philosophy?

Philosophy enables a person to engage in critical analysis and interpretation of


concepts, definition, arguments, and problems.

Philosophy improves problem-solving and decision making.

Philosophy can help us be more open to new and different ideas.

Communication skills is enhanced because study of philosophy trains us to be


clear and precise about our thoughts and sentiments to express exactly what
we want to convey.
