Site 2: Occupational Outlook Handbook: Radiologic and MRI Technologists --- bit.ly/radio111
1. Which of the listed duties do you think would be the most challenging and why?
Having to operate special imaging equipment to create images and create tests. I feel like this would be the most challenging for me because I
am not the best with technology and you need to really know the machine you’re working with in order to not harm your patient. They also
have to assist physicians with invasive procedures and are trained to operate a large amount of equipment.
More technologists work in hospitals, but many also work in physician offices, medical laboratories, and outpatient care centers.
3. What courses should high school students take if they are interested in radiology?
Taking algebra, anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, computer applications, introduction to health care, nursing, physics, safety, and
first aid, microbiology, and biochemistry, can all help if a student is interested in radiology.
Math skills are necessary for this occupation because radiographers need to determine the exposure, amperage, time, voltage and other
variables that require proficiency in math so that each patient can have a successful radiograph of good diagnostic quality.
c. What type of degree is the most common for those wanting a career in radiology?
How long does it take to get this degree? (You may have to look this up on another site.)
Choosing a degree in chemistry, physics, and biology is common for those wanting a career in radiology, and the degree requirements of a
radiologist include receiving a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.). It takes about 4 years to get a bachelor’s
degree in chemistry, physics, and biology. To get an M.D. degree, it takes 4 years, but some physicians are also required to complete residency
that can last up to 7 years.
Radiologist Oncologists make the most money although the amount can vary. A radiologist also makes a similar amount of money.
b. What is the mean annual wage for radiologic technologists? Divide this wage by 52 weeks to determine how much money you would make in a
week in this career?
The mean annual wage for radiologic technologists is $61,370 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2021. This means you’d make
about $1,180 in a week for this career.
The projected growth for this career is 6.3% from 2018 to 2028.
6. Radiation therapist is listed as a similar occupation. What is this person's job duties?
The person’s job duties are to explain and answer questions regarding treatment plans to the patient, protect the patients from improper
exposure to radiation, watch over the patient for any unusual or odd reactions to the procedure, calibrate and operate the machine to treat
the patient with radiation
