North Riding is a suburb of Randburg in South Africa's Region C (formerly Johannesburg Region 5).
This suburb is named after one of his three historic districts in Yorkshire. The North Riding was
located to the north of Johannesburg's CBD, so the term 'North' was preferred at the time. This
suburb was under the jurisdiction of Randburg City Council before being incorporated into the
Johannesburg Metropolitan Area. Of his original three farms combined to form Randburg, North
Riding was located on the Olifenhout farm. The North Riding completely surrounds the suburb of
Bellaire Park. The area was once a prominent equestrian and stabling hub in northern Johannesburg,
but has since been replaced by other areas such as Kyalami and the Honeydew Extension. This is also
reflected in road and street names. Previously the area was a rather rural and agricultural holding
and is still referred to by some as North Riding A.H. Since 1996, the North Riding has rapidly
developed in both the residential and commercial sectors. Surrounding suburbs include Olivedale,
Northworld, Northwold Gardens, Northgate, Johannesburg North, Noordan and Golden Harvest. The
main streets of the suburb include Blandford, Bellaire and Malibongwe (formerly Hans Strydom),
with the original entry roads being Windsor and Smith, Ascot and Hyperion. North Riding has a
variety of shopping centers and B&B accommodation. Various rivers flow through this region,
including the Olienhoutspoort, which flows from west to northeast. Miriam Makeba said he was
living in the suburbs at the time of his death.

Northgate, North Riding was once an area given over mainly to small holdings; plots of land on the
