How Heat Is Transferred : Heat is the energy that warms our houses and cooks our food. It is the
transfer of energy from a warmer body to a cooler body. How does this heat transfer take place?
Conduction is one method of heat transfer that takes place when there is a difference in temperature
between two objects. For example, if a silver spoon is inserted into a pot of hot tea, the handle of the
5 spoon will quickly become hot. This causes the molecules at the cold end to move faster. So, Energy is
transferred or conducted.

jian
Heat flows from a warmer object to a cooler one until the temperature are equal. Substances like metal
are good conductors because heat transfers from one molecule of metal to another. Substances like glass,
plastic, and wood act as insulators because their molecules transfer energy so slowly. Gases and liquids
10 are poor conductors because the molecules make very little contact with which to pass on the energy.
The warmest materials are those that trap pockets of air, such as wool, fiberglass, and asbestos.
A vacuum would make an ideal insulator because it has no molecules to transfer the heat.
Two factors affect the rate at which heat energy is transferred by conduction from one body to another.
The first factor is the difference in temperature between the two bodies. The second factor is the amount
15 of surface contact between the two bodies.
Although molecules in a fluid do not conduct heat very well, they do transfer heat by convection.
Convection is the upward flow of masses of liquid or gas molecules as they are heated from below. The
hot air rising above a radiator is an example of convection. As the heat causes the air to expand, it
becomes less dense and rises. Convection is used in hot air furnaces, in which air is heated and forced
20 into a room to replace the cold air to be heated. Ocean currents and winds are examples of convection
Radiation is the third method of heat transfer. All life on earth is dependent on radiation of the sun’s
heat and light energy. One fascinating aspect of the sun’s radiation is that the electromagnetic rays that
carry warmth and light to the earth are invisible and without heat. But, when the rays reach the earth,
they light the atmosphere and warm our world.
25 In contrast to conducted and convected heat, radiated heat passes through a vacuum. All objects
emit, or give off radiation. For example, when two objects are near each other, the warmer one will
give off more energy than the cooler one. Thus, transferring energy from one to the other.
Usually, objects do not absorb all the energy but reflect some of it. More energy is reflected by light
colors than dark colors.
30 The three modes of heat transfer – conduction, convection, and radiation – are subject to two
conditions: First, heat is transferred only when there is a disparity in temperature. Second, the flow is
always from hot to cold. Any object such as trees, stones, our body, radiate heat energy. This is
transferred to any nearby object which is colder than the source of heat energy.

IV. READ THE TEXT THEN COMPLETE THE DIAGRAM ACCORDING TO THE TEXT
The chordates are a large and highly diverse animal group. They comprises vertebrates or animals with
backbones (often refered to as the higher chordates) as well as a group of animals which lack vertebrae but
which resemble vertebrates in other important respects. These are referred to as protochordates, or lower
chordates. The vertebrates are divided into five classes: fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
Each of these five classes can be further subdivided into smaller groups: for example, mammals can be
classified into 18 groups, known as orders. Examples of orders are marsupials (such as kangaroos),
primates (including man and the monkeys) and carnivores (including dogs and cats). The class of reptiles
consists of five orders: examples of these are crocodilians (including crocodiles and alligators) and
squamata, examples of which are snakes and lizards.

IX. READ THE TEXT, THEN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BELOW : Enter a Different World
Welcome to Harrods – a different world for a million reasons. Harrods which has goods displayed in 60
windows and 5½ hectares of selling space. is the largest store in Europe. In one year over 14 million purchases
are made in the 214 departments where you can buy anything from a pin to an elephant – if you can convince the
manager of the Pet Department that you are a suitable elephant owner! Harrods policy that stocks a wide and
5 exciting range of merchandise in every department give the customer a choice of goods which is unique in its
variety. In every department there are choices which no other store can match: Harrods stocks 100 different
whiskies, including 57 single malts, 450 different cheeses, 500 types of shirts and 9.000 ties to go with them, 8.000
dresses and 150 different pianos.
Harrods also offers a number of special services to its customers including a bank, an insurance department,
10 travel agency, London’s circulating library, a theatre ticket agency and a funeral service. More than £40 million
worth of goods are exported from Harrods annually through the Export Department that can deal with any
customer purchase or order. All the staffs who have the responsibility will pack and send goods to any address in
the world. Recently, for example, six bread rolls were sent to New York, a handkerchief to Los Angeles, a pound
of sausages to a yacht anchored in the Mediterranean, a Persian carpet to Iran and a £5.000 chess set to Australia.
15 Harrods has a world wide reputation for first-class service. It has 4.000 staff, rising to 6.000 at Christmas time.
Harrods sells 5 million different products, not all of which are actually kept in stock in the store itself.
To handle this enormous range, a new computerized warehouse is being built. It will be the largest warehouse in
Britain and the second largest in Europe. This will deal with a wider range of goods than any other distribution
centre in the world. Its modern technology allow a customer to order any product (for example, a dining table
20 or a dishwasher) from any assistant in the store. The assistant who will be able to check its availability quickly
on a computer screen, decide with the customer the suitable delivery date and time. Then, pass the order directly
through the computer to the warehouse. The time of delivery will be guaranteed to within one hour.
Henry Charles Harrods’s first shop was opened in 1849, but the building as it stands today was started in 1901.
25 It has many items of architechtural interest: the plaster ceilings are original, as is the famous Meet Hall with its
Victorian wall tiles, and the light fittings on the ground floor date back to the 1930s. To feed its customers,
Harrods has six restaurants. The two most famous are the Circle self-service restaurants and Harrods Restaurant.
The former will be ready to offer its customer with delicious food at reasonable prices. It is at the famous Harrods
Restaurant, where queues form every afternoon. Visitors come to The ‘Grand Buffet Tea’, which for a fixed
price allows them to eat as many cream cakes and gateaux as their greed will allow. The waitresses serve
them with India or China tea. If you feel like a drink you can choose between the pub atmosphere of the Green
Man Tavern and the sophistication of the Cocktail Lounge. Harrods trully is a different world.
