Foreword
The TC315 crown block is one of the main equipments of ZJ70D rig. It is designed and

manufactured according to the client’s requirement and its design conforms to the third edition ,API

Spec 4F and the fourth edition ,API spec 8C specification.

In order to ensure our user to operate the crown block properly, we have prepared this ‘Operation

manual of TC315 crown block’. The manual has described in general the technical parameters,

structures, installation, operation, lubrication and maintenance, etc of the crown block. Please read this

manual carefully before installing and operating.

There is a recommended spare parts list as a reference for user ordering parts. If there are any parts,

you need,but not included in the list,please refer to the related parts list for ordering.

There is a ex-factory code for each crown block, please point out the model and code of the crown

block when you order parts or enquire the related things.

1 Safety warning
l The personnel who is occupied in installation, operation and maintenance of the crown block
should be trained and qualified, and carryout the work with operation certificate.
l The operator must read the related manuals before he starts to operate the equipment
carefully. He can operate or maintain the equipment only when he knows well the functions
and operation of the equipment.
l There must be a chief principal for installation, operation and maintenance; and persons
who participate in the work should be assigned clearly; and detailed and reliable safety
measures should be taken.
l All the equipments should be used strictly in accordance with their operating rules and
related safety regulations.
l The equipment might not be operated in the dark unless there are lighting devices.
l All the persons on duty must put on safety wares according to the related regulations.
l The proper lifting and transportation equipments should be used for the corresponding
weight.
l Ensure to release the pressure from all high pressure pipes or hoses completely before
disconnecting them. Connect electric apparatus according to the same requirement and
ensure to cut off the power supply before servicing operation.
l It is forbidden to maintain and repair the equipment during its operation.
l It is forbidden to overload the equipment.

2 Product descriptions

2.1 Purpose
The crown block is the fixed part of hoisting system sheave assembly; it works together with the
traveling part of hoisting system to finish the drill string tripping and casing running via drawworks. The
applicable ambient temperature is from-18℃ to 55℃.humidity is ≤90%(20℃)

2.2 Standards and specifications


2.2.1 Basic parameters are in conformity with professional standard SY/T5609-1999 “Type and
basic parameters of drilling rig”

2.2.2 Designs are in conformity with 3rd edition of API Spec 4F “Specifications for drilling and
well servicing mast and substructure”
2.2.3 Designs are in conformity with 4th edition of API Spec 8C "Specification for Drilling and
Production Hoisting Equipment ".
2.2.4 Designs are in conformity with AISC 335-89 "Manual of steel construction".
2.2.5 Designs are in conformity with ANSI/AWS D1.1M:2002 “Specifications for steel
construction welding”
2.2.6 Designs are in conformity with 25th edition of API Spec 9A “Specifications for wire rope”.
2.2.7 Designs are in conformity with 12th edition of API RP 9B "Recommended Practice on
Application, Care, and Use of Wire Rope for Oilfield Service”.

3 Structure features and main parts


TC450 crown block consists of crown block frame, bearing seat, crown block shaft, main sheave,
fast line sheave, sand sheave, auxiliary sheave, buffer device, rope kick-back device, guard, ladder and
handrail etc.
3.1 The crown block frame is a welded structure. Its design and manufacture are in conformity with
rd
3 edition of API Spec 4F relative specification.
3.2 The fast line is led to fast line sheave from the back of mast. The wire rope is reeved in the
crown block and traveling block in parallel.
3.3 It is equipped with rope kick-back device on the outer edge of sheaves; the main sheave
assembly is equipped with a guard.
3.4 The bearings and sheave groove are designed according to 4th edition of API Spec. 8C,the Max.
hoisting line system is 6×7,the diameter of the wire line is φ38mm.
3.5 A double-row taper roller bearing is assembled between each of the main sheave and the fast
line sheave and its shaft. Every bearing has its separate lube line which can ensure the sufficient

lubrication of the bearing. Grease all sheave bearings weekly with NLGI2 compound lithium base
synthetic grease before operation and during operation. And there is a centralized lube device at the side
of crown block corridor for the convenience of crown block sheave lubrications, inject through grease
nipple.
3.6 The connection between crown block and mast adopts pins and bolts
3.7 There are two auxiliary blocks hanging under the crown block for hanging rope of air winch.
Each block load capacity is 50kN. And one block for man-riding winch, load capacity is 10kN; one
well logging winch block, load capacity 50Kn.
3.8 There is a trussed construction block lifting frame installed at the crown block for lifting block
when repair the crown block. Its maximum lifting capacity is 50Kn.
3.9 There is sand block assembly at crown block, mainly for well logging sand
3.10 the crown block is equipped with two spare 5kN hoisting sheaves
3.11 . There is a suspending pad eye connected with bolts for top drive under the crown block
frame, which is easy for connecting to top drive guide rail to satisfy the requirement of top drive device
installation.
3.12.There is a sleeper buffer device under crown clock frame for preventing the traveling block
from striking the crown block directly.

4 Installation and operation

4.1 Installation
The installation of the crown block is carried out under the condition of mast laying down
horizontally on the well site. Adopt crane to lift the crown block through the lifting eyes on crown block
beam and it’s forbidden to drag it on ground. In order to ensure the crown block works normally, during
installation the wellbore center of crown block must be aligned with the wellbore center of mast, the
bottom surface of crown block frame must be perpendicular to the wellbore centerline of mast. In
installation, first lift the crown block with crane to the top of mast, make the bottom plate of crown block
and the top plate of mast aligned with two φ30 locating pins, then fasten them with 12 pieces of M30
(grade 8.8) bolts and lock up by slotted nuts and split pins. After completing the main body installation,
install other accessories. After installation, the crown block should be carefully inspected if there is any
missed part, improperly installed part, enlightened nuts or uninstalled safety pins etc.

4.2 Operation
The drilling line of this crown block and traveling block shall be stringed up in parallel and in order.

5 Lubrication

A double-row taper roller bearing is assembled between each main sheave and the shaft, and also
between the guide sheave and the shaft, which can ensure smoothly running of the sheave and the good
stabilization and axial force resistance. Every bearing has its separate lube line which can ensure the
sufficient lubrication of the bearing and sheave active rotation. Grease all sheave bearings weekly with
NLGI2 compound lithium base synthetic grease before operation and during operation. Grease can be
injected through oil nipple. For lube points please(●)check the following Fig.

6 Maintenance
6.1 During crown block transportation, installation and operation, the paint coating on the crown
block should not be damaged so as not to be rusted quickly. In the normal operation period, crown block
should be completely maintained every year including thoroughly blasting and corrosion prevention.
6.2 The crown block should be checked before installation and operation, and during the working

period, the following items must be checked:

6.2.1 Check the sheaves whether they can run freely and are not blocked;

6.2.2 Check the nuts for looseness retighten the loose one if any;

6.2.3 Check the handrails whether they are linked reliably, whether there is any weld crack in

handrail seats, repair it if any;

6.2.4 Check the condition of guard, rope kick back frame, whether they rub sheaves to affect their

rotation;

6.2.5 Check the lubrication condition of sheave bearings before operation, in working period, refill

grease as per regulated time, and check the lube passage whether it’s blocked.

6.2.6 Check the temperature rise of bearings, it should not be more than 40℃.

6.3 Inspection for wearing condition and repairing of sheave groove:

The size and shape of sheave groove are important for the service life of wireline, so the sheave

groove should be measured by dial gauge periodically.

The sheave should be repaired or replaced when rope groove radius is less than17.91mm
The repaired sheave groove should conform to the following regulations:

Nominal diameter of wireline: φ35mm

Groove bottom radius R(mm) : 18.52mm≤R≤19.2mm

7 Storage and transportation

7.1 Before preservation for a long time, dirt,mud and water-retaining materials stuck on crown

block should be cleared off; accumulated water should be drained away.

7.2 The crown block should be stored in a dry and ventilated warehouse without corrosion. When

you store the crown block, there should be sufficient supports to prevent deformation.

7.3 All machined surfaces such as sheave groove etc should be coated with anti-rust oil and

packed with plastics.

7.4 All pins, bolts etc should be marked, coated with anti-rust oil and packed in boxes.

7.5 When the crown block is kept outdoors, cover it with a tarp.

7.6 The crown block should be packed and transported integrally; handrail, auxiliary sheave etc

can be dismantled and banded to the crown block frame, and transported together with the crown block.

Bolts, pins and safety pins etc should be packed in a box for transportation.
