Matter in Our Surroundings

Part 2

o Experiments for Characteristics of Particles of Matter:

EXPERIMENT 2:

When we burn an incense stick (agarbatti) in one corner of the room, its
fragrance or the pleasant smell of it spreads in the whole room quickly.

The burning of incense stick produces gases or vapours having pleasant

smell. The particles of gases produced by the burning of incense stick
move rapidly in all directions, mix with the moving particles of air in the
room and reach every part of the room quickly along with the air.
This experiment proves that the particles of matter are continuously moving.

EXPERIMENT 3:
We can easily move our hands in a bucket filled with water but if we try to do the
same with a solid object it seems impossible because they have greater force of
attraction between them that keeps the particles united and hence, we cannot
separate the particles.
This experiment proves that the particles of matter have force of attraction between
them.

States of matter
Matter can be categorised into three states.
Write answers for the followings:
Q1. Which of the following are matter?
Chair, air, love, smell, hate, almonds, thought, cold, lemon water, smell of
perfume.
Q2. What are the characteristics of the particles of matter?
Q3. The mass per unit volume of a substance is called density.
(density=mass/volume). Arrange the following in the order of increasing
density – air, exhaust from the chimneys, honey, water, chalk, cotton and iron.
