Do you know these sounds?
As there are more sounds than letters,
we use symbols for pronunciation.
/uː/ and /ʊ/

Vowel -you pronounce with your mouth open,


allowing the air to flow through it
How to make the sound /uː/?
/uː/ is a long sound. Look at the diagram. Listen
and then say the sound. Make your lips into a
tunnel shape. Your tongue is a long way back in
your mouth. Target sound: /uː/

• 舌身后缩,舌尖离开下齿,舌的后部抬高。双
唇突出且收圆
• 类似于汉字"乌"的音,但需把音拖长

How to make the sound /ʊ/?


/ʊ/ is a short sound. Look at the diagram. Listen
and then say the sound. Your tongue is not so far
back as for /uː/. Target sound: /ʊ/

• 舌身后缩,舌的后部抬高。双唇突出且收圆。
[u]不是单纯地把[u:]读短,发[u]时舌头比
[u:]矮
• 也类似于汉字"乌"的音,但音更短促
