1. SIMULATION EXPERIMENT 1:

1.1 PURPOSE:

To investigate the effect of adding resistors IN SERIES on the amperage.

1.2 INVESTIGATIVE QUESTION:

How does adding resistors in series affect the amperage?

1.3 HYPOTHESIS:

Formulate a hypothesis for the investigation.

(Your teacher will explain to you what a hypothesis is)

(1)

1.4 Material and apparatus:

9 V Cells; Identical bulbs; Conductive wires; Switch; Ammeter

1.5 Method:

1.5.1 Use the PHET simulation on the computer and build a circuit with ONE
cell, ammeter, light bulb and switch IN SERIES.

1.5.2 CONNECT THE AMMETER INTO THE CIRCUIT. You can connect
the ammeter anywhere in the circuit.

1.5.3 Close the switch.

1.5.4 Draw a circuit diagram of the circuit you have set up on the
computer.

Points Award:[POINT IN THE COMPUTER ROOM ALLOCATED] All

components in the diagram shown as set up on computer (✓✓);
(4)
All Components correctly connected in series (✓✓)

2
1.5.5 Observe the brightness of the light bulb and write down the
ammeter reading.

AMMETER READING FOR ONE BULB IN SERIES ………………

1.5.6 Open the switch.

Now connect a second bulb in series in the circuit. Close the
switch.
Note how bright the bulbs shine and write down the new
ammeter reading.

AMMETER READING FOR TWO BULBS IN SERIES …………..

1.5.7 Open the switch.

Now connect a third bulb in series.
Close the switch.
Note how bright the bulbs shine and write down the ammeter
reading.

AMMETER READING FOR THREE BULBS IN SERIES …………

1.6 RESULTS:

Complete the table:

Number Describe the brightness of the Ammeter Reading (A)

1.7 Draw a graph to represent the relationship between the number of light
bulbs and the amperage.

HEADLINE: __________________________________________________________

X-axis: number of bulbs

Marks Award for Chart:

Heading correct: (1)

(Number of bulbs;ammeter) coordinates plotted correctly (2)

Shape of chart (2)

4
1.8 ANALYSIS:

1.8.1 What happens to the brightness of the light bulbs when the
number of light bulbs increases.

(2)

1.8.2 With two bulbs in the circuit, did one bulb burn brighter than the
other or did they shine equally brightly?

(2)

1.8.3 With three light bulbs in the circuit, did one shine brighter than the
other two or did they shine equally brightly?

(2)

1.8.4 What can you conclude from the previous answers about the electric current in
a series circuit?

(2)

1.6.5 How did the ammeter reading change when you connected more light
bulbs in series?

(2)

1.9 DEDUCTION:

1.9.1 According to your answers above, what happens to the electric current
when more light bulbs are connected in series?

(2)

1.9.2 Was your hypothesis confirmed or disproved?

(2)

2. SIMULATION EXPERIMENT 2:

2.1 PURPOSE:

To investigate the influence of adding resistors (light bulbs) IN PARALLEL on

the current strength and brightness of the light bulbs.

2.2 INVESTIGATIVE QUESTION:

How does adding bulbs in parallel affect the brightness of the bulbs?

2.3 HYPOTHESIS:

Formulate a hypothesis for the investigation.

(Your teacher will explain to you what a hypothesis is)

2.4 Material and apparatus:

9 V Cells; 2 Identical bulbs; Conductive wires; Switch; Ammeter

2.5 Method:

2.5.1 Use the PHET simulation on the computer and build a circuit with ONE
cell, ammeter, light bulb and switch.

2.5.2 CONNECT THE AMMETER INTO THE CIRCUIT. You can connect
the ammeter anywhere in the circuit.

2.5.3 Close the switch.

2.5.4 Observe the brightness of the light bulb and write down the
ammeter reading.

AMMETER READING: ………………..

2.5.5 Open the switch.

Now connect a second bulb in PARALLEL in the circuit. Close the
switch.
Connect an ammeter in each parallel branch of the circuit.
Notice how bright the bulbs shine and read the ammeter reading at
different places in the circuit.

position A and B in the parallel circuit?

(2)

2.6.2 WITH THE SWITCHES CLOSED: How does the brightness of the light
bulbs in circuit A compare with that of circuit B?
