MODULE 2: The Different Areas of a Residence

Design does not only focus on good drafting and presentation skills and techniques. This module introduces
how function affects design by looking at the different design considerations and guidelines for arranging
the different areas in a residence.

UNIT 1: THE SPACES OF THE LIVING AREA

The living area is where most of the daily living activity occurs. It is where the family members entertains,
relaxes, dines, and participates in other recreational activities.

The whole living area can be subdivided into smaller room and areas which are designed to perform specific
functions. This subdivision may include the living room, dining room, recreation or game
room/entertainment room, family room, patio, entrance foyer, den or study, and guest lavatories. In smaller
homes, many of the rooms combine two or more functions such as the living room where it can constitute to
all the functions of the other rooms listed under the living area.

These are some of the questions that we need to answer whenever we are designing spaces. In architectural
design, we follow certain principles and standards when it comes to preparing a layout of rooms and areas.
Majority of the principles we follow are based from the intended functions of the space. Note that designing
according to the functions of the spaces requires that you must be familiar with the sizes and dimensions of
the furniture as well as the human dimensions (anthropometrics).
