OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that all employees working heights/ installing handrails
is carried out in safe manner and according to the relevant Acts

2. SCOPE
This procedure is applicable to all Ingwenya employees and contractors that intent to maintain
and repair of hand rails.

3. REVIEW
It is the responsibility of the Safety Officer to ensure that this procedure is reviewed every
two years.

4. IMPLEMENTATION
The following Roles are responsible to implement this procedure

Procedure

1. Fill out mini risk assessment and communicate with entire team
2. Gather tools and pre use checklists to be filled out
3. Do not make use of any defective equipment
4. Check that no rust is present on the hand rail
5. Check that the bolts are still in place
6. Check that railings are stable.
7. If you need to install new hand rails you must wear a safety harness when working at
heights.
8. Barricade area on ground floor to prevent falling objects hitting a person / machine on
ground floor/ lower level.
9. Check for no cracks in the metal/ welding
10. Fill out a working at heights permit and have your supervisor sign it.

General
 Correct PPE must be worn
 Communicate risk assessment with all persons involved.
