MATH T STPM SEM 3 2017

Section A [ 45 marks ]
Answer all questions.

1) The masses, x, in kilogramme of 25 students who take part in a qualifying entrance test to Malaysian
Sports School are as follows:

34 81 42 46 54 62 48 42 38 60
64 59 72 36 63 55 66 59 58 57
43 75 52 43 51

Determine the first, second and third quartile. Hence, comment on the skewness of the distribution. [6]

2) Two events, M and W, are such that P( M ) = 0.3, P(W | M ) = 0.5 and P(W | M ' ) = 0.25.
(a) Find
(i) P( M  W ) [1]
(ii) P( M 'W ) [1]
(iii) P(W ) [2]
(iv) P( M  W ) [2]
(b) State a reason why the events M and W are
(i) not mutually exclusive, [1]
(ii) dependent. [1]

3) A discrete random variable X which takes the values 0, 1, 2 and 3, and its probability distribution is shown
in the table below.
x 0 1 2 3
P( X = x) a b 2
3a 0.15

If E ( X ) = 1.20, find the values of a and b. [4]

Hence, show that X is not a binomial random variable. [2]

4) Random samples of size 60 are taken from a population which is assumed to have the binomial distribution
B(12, 0.4).
(a) Determine the sampling distribution of the sample mean. [4 ]
(b) Find the probability that the sample mean is more than 4.90. [3]
(c) If the mean of a random sample is 4.41, obtain a 90% confidence interval for the population mean.
[3]
(d) Interpret and comment on the confidence interval which is obtained in (c). [2]

5) The diameters of ball bearing produced in large batches are normally distributed with mean 12.00 mm and
standard deviation 0.05 mm. The mean diameter in a batch must lie within certain limits. Fifty ball bearing
are randomly selected from a batch and the diameter of each ball bearing is measured. Using the 2%
significance level, find the limits of the mean diameter so that the batch may be accepted. [5]
6) The classification of 100 chickens according to the breed and the size of eggs produced are shown in the
contingency table below.
Size of eggs
Small Large
A 42 18
Breed
B 19 21

Test at the 5% significance level whether there is a relationship between breed and the size of eggs
produced. [8]

Section B [ 15 marks ]
Answer one question only.
You may answer all the questions but, only the first answer will be marked.

7) The masses of guavas in a farm are normally distributed with mean,  and standard deviation,  . The
mass percentages of guava that less than 400g is 15.87% and more than 500g is 6.68%.
(a) Determine the values of  and  . [7]
(b) Find the probability that a guava has a mass of at most 500g given that it is more than 400g. [3]

An agriculture officer thinks that the number of guavas, Y, on a branch of guava trees in the farm may be
modelled by a Poisson distribution.
(c) If P(Y = 0) = 0.0954, find the parameter of the Poisson distribution. [3]
(d) Give two reasons why Poisson distribution cannot be an exact model for Y. [2]

8) The time taken by female students in a college in the 100 metres sprint is normally distributed with mean
18 seconds and variance,  2 . A special training programme was conducted early this year to improve the
students’ performance. At the end of the programme, a random sample of 65 female students is taken.
(a) If 19 female students from the random sample are able to finish the 100 metres sprint within 16 seconds,
test at the 5% significance level whether 25% of the students are able to do so. [6]
(b) The times, t, in seconds, taken in the 100 metres sprint for the random sample are summarised
 t = 1116 and  t 2 = 19998.
(i) Find an unbiased estimate for  2 . [2]
(ii) Test at the 5% significance level whether the programme has effectively improved the
performance of the students in the 100 metres sprint. [7]
