• The sound of the horse’s hooves, the skirt, and the dew have a mysterious, haunting quality.
• The causes of the sound could be supernatural beings who inhabited the unused and hidden
road in the dark of the night.
• The road could also be used by robbers or thieves who were using it for their purposes and,
since no one knew of it, they could stay hidden.
• The sources of the sound could also be the poet’s imagination, who thought of the time when
the road was used and the reality of then being transposed to the reality of today.
