Anaerobic respiration (fermentation) in yeast

Balloon
1 Label three test tubes A, B, and C.
Place 20 cm3 of yeast suspended in cold, boiled water into tube A.
(Boiling removes oxygen from water.) Add a few drops of liquid
paraffin (to cover the surface of the yeast suspension). Place 20 cm3
of glucose dissolved in cold, boiled water into tube B. Add liquid
paraffin. Place 10 cm3 of yeast suspended in cold, boiled water into
tube C, then add 10 cm3 of glucose dissolved in cold, boiled water.
Mix the two together. Add a few drops of liquid paraffin.
2 Place a balloon firmly over the neck of each tube (tie with cotton Liquid paraffin
if necessary). Make sure the balloon is deflated. Put the tubes in a Yeast/glucose
warm place for 24 hours. mixture

3 Record what happens to the balloons.

Explain your observations.
Why was cold, boiled water used in this experiment?
Why was liquid paraffin added to each tube?
What gas entered a balloon?
