_____ 12. A plumber charges $13.50 per hour for a plumbing job that requires more than 3 hours to complete.
For any job requiring 3 hours or less, there is a flat charge of $40.50. If h represents the number of
hours the job requires, which of the following expressions gives the charge, in dollars, for a job

1. Suppose you plan to buy many blank compact disks. You check price list and find out that if you buy
100 CDs or fewer you pay $0.74 each. However if you buy between 100 and 300 CDs, the price drops
to $0.69 each for the second hundred. Write a function that describes the cost, c of n number of CD
purchased.
2. A sporting goods store sells 90 ski jackets in a season for $200 each. Each $10 decrease in the price
would result in five more jackets being sold. Find the number of jackets sold and the selling price to
give revenues of $17 600 from sales of ski jackets.
3. A company receives $45 for each unit of output sold. It has a variable cost of $25 per item and a fixed
cost of $1600.
What is its profit if it sells (a) 75 items, (b)150 items, and (c) 200 items?
4. Mary's water bill changes as the amount of water used changes. If Mary uses less than 100 gallons of
water the cost is 10 cents a gallon. If Mary uses 100 gallons to 500 gallons the cost is 15 cents a gallon
plus a $20 fee to encourage conservation. If Mary uses over 500 gallons the cost is 20 cents a gallon
plus a $50 fee to encourage conservation. Write a piecewise function to represent the cost of water
with x representing the amount of water used in gallons and C(x) representing the cost of water in
dollars.
