PROBLEM 2.35

Knowing that a = 35°, determine the resultant of the three

forces shown.

150 N

SOLUTION

100-N Force: Fx = +(100 N) cos35 = +81.915 N

Fy = -(100 N)sin 35 = -57.358 N

150-N Force: Fx = +(150 N) cos65 = +63.393 N

Fy = -(150 N)sin 65 = -135.946 N

200-N Force: Fx = -(200 N) cos35 = -163.830 N

Fy = -(200 N)sin 35 = -114.715 N

PROBLEM 2.39
A collar that can slide on a vertical rod is subjected to
the three forces shown. Determine (a) the required
value of α if the resultant of the three forces is to be
horizontal, (b) the corresponding magnitude of the
resultant.

SOLUTION

Rx = SFx
= (85 N) cos a + (170 N)sin (a ) (1)

Ry = SFy
= +(110 N) + (85 N)sin (a ) - (170 N) cos a (2)

(a) For R to be horizontal, we must have R y = 0. We make R y = 0 in Eq. (2):

110 + 85sin a - 170 cos a = 0

22 + 17sin a - 34 cos a = 0
17sin a + 22 = -34 1 - sin 2 a
(
289sin 2 a + 748sin a + 484 = 1156 1 - sin 2 a )
1445sin a + 748sin a - 672 = 0
2

Solving by use of the quadratic formula:

sin a = 0.47059
a = 28.072 a = 28.1 ◀

(b) Since R = Rx using Eq. (1):

R = 85cos28.072 + 170sin 28.072

= 155.0 N
R = 155.0 N ◀

PROBLEM 2.49
A B
Two cables are tied together at C and are loaded as shown. Knowing that
30° 30° P = 300 N, determine the tension in cables AC and BC.

200 N
C 45°

SOLUTION

Free-Body Diagram

SFx = 0 - TCA sin 30 + TCB sin 30 - P cos 45 - 200N = 0
For P = 200N we have,
- 0.5TCA + 0.5TCB + 212.13 - 200 = 0 (1)
SFy = 0 TCA cos30 - TCB cos30 - P sin 45 = 0

0.86603TCA + 0.86603TCB - 212.13 = 0 (2)

Solving equations (1) and (2) simultaneously gives, TCA = 134.6 N ◀

TCB = 110.4 N ◀
