Engine fire detection system components of the Engine and APU Fire Detec-
tion Accessory Unit are engine 1 and 2 control cards and accessory control
card.
 Control Cards
− Each engine has a corresponding control card.
These cards constantly monitor and process signals produced by detec-
tor loops.
The card send alarm or fault signals to accessory control card.
 Accessory Control Card
− The accessory control card interprets detection control card signals, pro-
vides tests, and sends fire/overheat warning and fault indication signals
to the fire control panel.
Loop lights A/B Engine No. 1, No. 2 − APU
− If a loop light illuminates, a loop fault in the reseptive detector loop is
present.
 Fault/Inop Test Switch
− Test for Engine and APU Fire Detection Accessory Unit
− During Test, all 5 loop lights have to illuminate. If not, failure in the corre-
sponding detector card.

At a predetermined pressure value corresponding to the alarm temperature, the
responder alarm switch will close sending a signal to the control card.
The signal will activate the circuits which cause the fire bell and warning horn

APU FIRE DETECTION SYSTEM - FAULT ISOLATION

General
Trouble with the fire detection system will usually be indicated by absence of
fire warning lights or alarm bell when the test switch is operated on the fire
protection module, or by a false alarm.
If a wiring fault or sensor loss of pressure has occurred, the APU detector inop-
erative light will be illuminated.
Lights on the Engine and APU Fire Control Panel, and master fire warning
lights should be tested before assuming the detection system is faulty by oper-
ating the master lights test circuits (Ref 33−15−00).
If power to the APU card fails, both the APU inoperative light and the APU de-
tector inoperative light will illuminate.
The wiring can be checked using the wiring schematic and an ohmmeter.
If moisture in a connector is the cause of a false alarm or APU INOP indication,
remove moisture by blowing out connectors with dry nitrogen.
Whenever the Engine and APU Fire Control panel P8−1 is removed and re-
placed, a test must be performed on the APU fire detection system (AMM
26−15−00, A/T).

Sensing Element
A sensing element provides overheat detection in the main wheel well.
The sensing element is attached to structure in the ceiling of the wheel well.
The element is attached by quick−release fasteners.
The sensing element is a thermistor type with resistance inversely proportional
to temperature.
As the element temperature rises, its resistance is lowered.

WHEEL WELL FIRE DETECTION - OPERATION

Normal Operation
Overheat detection is automatic when power is applied to the airplane and the
overheat detection and aural warning circuit breakers are closed.
If a fire occurs in the wheel well area, the sensing element temperature rises.
At a resistance value corresponding to alarm temperature, the compartment
overheat accessory unit will trigger an overheat warning signal.
The signal will activate the fire alarm bell, turn on the Wheel Well overheat light
on the Engine and APU Fire Control Module, and illuminate the Fire Warning
lights on P7.
When the overheat condition is removed, the temperature and sensing ele-
ment resistance values return to normal.
The overheat signal will be removed and the wheel well overheat indicating
components will go off.

AIRPLANES WITH FENWAL COMPARTMENT OVERHEAT ACCESSORY

UNIT (Alternate Installation)
− If an alarm/fault condition is detected by the unit, the alarm/fault will be
stored in the non−volatile memory of the unit.
− A procedure to clear the memory of the unit can be found in the Mainte-
nance Manual.

Test Operation
A wheel well overheat detection system continuity test can be made using the
TEST switch on the Engine and APU Fire Control Module.
The Wheel Well overheat indicating components come on when the test switch
is set to OVHT/FIRE and then go off when the switch is released.
For Training Purposes Only

The wheel well test relay grounds the wheel well sensing elements, simulating
an overheat and causing the warning components to operate.
Maintenance Practices
The minimum bend radius for the sensor element is one inch.
If it is possible, do not bend the element in a radius less than three inches.
Keep the element straight for at least one inch around all connectors and
mounting clips.

Test switches on the compartment overheat accessory unit enable a malfunc-
tion in the left overheat section to be isolated.

Test Operation
When the OVHT TEST switch on the Air Condition Module is pressed, the left
and right WING BODY OVERHEAT lights have to illuminate.
If the left WING−BODY OVERHEAT light on the Air Conditioning Module does
not come on when the OVHT TEST switch is pressed (continuity fault), or a
ground fault occurs causing the WING−BODY OVERHEAT light remain illumi-
nated (without pressing the TEST switch), the malfunction can be isolated to a
specific area of the airplane by using the test switches on the Compartment
Overheat Accessory Unit.
If the left overheat section fails to test and it is determined that the malfunction
is in the sensing elements, the test switches are used to determine the location

of the malfunction.
Moving the test switch 1 to the DN position, the associated sensing elements
are grounded, thus checking continuity from the control unit to the test switch.
Test relay is energized isolating the remaining sensing elments and airplane
wiring between the test switch and the test relay. If the OVERHEAT light on
control unit illuminates, the circuit being checked is operating correctly.
Using the test switch 2, than switch 3. If the OVERHEAT light on the control
unit does not illuminate, the malfunction is located in the respective sensing
element area or airplane wiring.

FENWAL UNIT - GENERAL BITE OPERATION

The system has both hardware and software built in test features.
A description of BITE follows. The BITE operating instructions are posted on
the cover plate of the M237 module.
Pushing the OVHT TEST switch on the P5−10 panel, tests all detectors for
continuity and faults.
All flight compartment displays of compartment overheat will display if each
loop is operating correctly.
Any faults detected during the test will be stored in the non−volatile memory for
recall as required.
At the M237 compartment overheat accessory unit, pushing the DISP TEST
switch initiates a self test of the display and associated circuits.
Code 88 is displayed as long as the switch is held if there is no failed dc power
source.
Momentarily pushing the LOC TEST switch initiates a self test of the control
circuits and sensing elements.
While the local test is being performed, the display indicates code 90.
If a fault condition is detected during the test sequence, the code for that fault
condition is indicated by the display for approximately two minutes.
Another momentary push of the LOC TEST switch during the two minute dis-
play interval causes the test sequence to continue.
If not continued, the test sequence terminates after approximately two minutes. R

When the entire test sequence has been performed, code 99 is displayed
for approximately one minute.
The test sequence initiated by the LOC TEST switch can be terminated at any
time by pushing the DISP TEST switch.
For Training Purposes Only

When an alarm/fault condition is identified, the code is stored in the non−vola-

tile memory for recall as required.
The condition is stored in non−volatile memory until the condition is resolved
and the memory is cleared.
The fault history stores the last ten codes that were cleared from the ac-
tive non−volatile memory.
Access to these functions is gained through the four BITE pushbutton switches
on the M237 module cover plate.

ENGINE FIRE EXTINGUISHING - OPERATION GENERAL

Operation
When there is an overheat or fire condition, the fire warning switch for that en-
gine unlocks.
You can also use the warning switch override under the handle to unlock the
fire warning switch.
When you pull the switch up, the engine systems are shutdown and isolated for
safety.
Engine 1 Fire Extinguishing
When you turn the engine 1 (left) fire warning switch clockwise, the extin-
guisher bottle squib 1 on the R bottle operates.
This breaks a seal and lets the halon gas in the R bottle to go to engine 1.
If you turn the same engine fire warning switch counter—clockwise, the extin-
guisher bottle squib 1 on the L bottle operates.
This sends the halon gas in the L bottle to go to engine 1.
When an engine fire extinguisher bottle is empty, the related BOTTLE DIS-
CHARGE light on the overheat/fire protection panel comes on.

Enqine 2 Fire Extinguishing

The engine 2 (right) fire extinguishing system operates the same as engine 1.
The difference is that the engine 2 fire handle switch causes the discharge car-
tridge 2 on the L or R bottle to operate and break a seal.

Training Information Point

Each fire extinguisher bottle has two extinguisher bottle squibs.
For Training Purposes Only

The extinguisher bottle squib 1 for each bottle sends halon gas to engine 1.
The engine 1 fire warning switch controls it. The extinguisher bottle squib 2 for
each bottle sends halon gas to engine 2.
The engine 2 fire warning switch controls it.

ENGINE FIRE EXT.- FUNCT. DESCR.

FunctionaL Description
When there is an overheat or fire condition, the related engine fire warning
switch unlocks.
You can also use the warning switch override under the handle to unlock the
fire warning switch.
When you pull the switch up, these functions occur:
Engine fuel shut off valve closes
Thrust reverser control power goes off
 Spar fuel valve closes
Power to the engine driven pump low pressure warn syatem goes off
 Bleed air valve closes
 Hydraulic shut off valve closes.
 Generator trips off
When you turn the engine 1 fire warning switch clockwise, 28v dc goes to the R
bottle’s squib 1.
There is an explosion of the squib. Halon gas goes from the bottle to engine 1.
If you turn the same engine fire warning switch counter—clockwise, 28v dc
goes to the L bottle’s squib 1.
This causes an explosion of the squib and sends halon gas to engine 1.
When an engine fire extinguisher bottle empties, the related
BOTTLE DISCHARGE light on the overheat/fire protection panel comes on.
The engine 2 fire extinguishing system operates the same as engine 1.
The difference is that the engine 2 fire warning switch sends 28v dc to cause
explosions of the R or L bottle’s squib 2.
For Training Purposes Only

Training Information Point

The fire extinguishing system receives power from the 28v dc hot battery bus.
Any time you operate the fire handle switches, the related extinguisher bottle
will release halon.

ENGINE FIRE EXTINGUISHING TEST

General
When the EXT TEST switch on the Engine and APU Fire Control Panel is
switched to Pos. 1 or 2, the 3 green lights have to be illuminate.
In this case, the squibs on the left (L) and right (R) bottle for the respective en-
gine (1 or 2) and the squib for the APU bottle are operative.
NOTE: OPTIONAL ON B737 AIRPLANES, IN TEST SWITCH POSITION 1
AND 2, A CONTINUITY CHECK OF THE BOTTLE LOW PRES-
SURE SWITCHES AND WIRES WILL BE PERFORMED.
THE L BOTTLE DISCHARGED, R BOTTLE DISCHARGED AND
APU BOTTLE DISCHARGED LIGHTS ILLUMINATE.
Extinguishing Test
Using the EXT TEST switch on Engine and APU Fire Control Module P8, a test
of the continuity of the heater(s) in each cartrige is initiated.
Placing the test switch to position 1, 28 Volt DC power closes four electronic
switches on the bilateral switch card.
If grounds are present through both firing coils of cartridges 1, the logic gates
provide outputs to bias the transistors and the green L BOTTLE and R
BOTTLE lights illuminate.
Similar test are performed for the catridges 2, when the test switch is placing to
position 2.
If a green bottle light does not illuminate during test, it indicates that one or
both firing coils in the squib failed.

APU FIRE EXT.- FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

Functional Description
When there is a fire condition, the APU fire warning switch on the overheat/fire
protection panel unlocks.
When you pull the APU fire warning switch up, a signal goes to these compo-
nents:
APU generator control unit to open the APU generator breaker
APU control unit to shutdown the APU systems.
With APU fire pulled, when you turn the fire warning switch clockwise or count-
er-clockwise, 28v dc goes to the APU extinguisher bottle.
This causes the APU fire extinguisher bottle squib explosion to release the ha-
lon gas.
You get the same results when you use the P28 APU ground control panel.
When you pull the fire handle switch on the P28 panel, a signal goes to these
components:
APU generator control unit to open the APU generator breaker
APU control unit to shutdown the APU systems.
The bottle discharge switch also arms.
The bottle discharge switch sends 28v dc to the APU extinguisher bottle.
This causes the APU extinguisher bottle squib to release the halon gas.
When the APU fire extinguisher bottle is empty, the pressure switch makes the
APU BOTTLE DISCHARGED light on the P8 panel come on.

Training Information Point

The fire extinguishing system electrically connects to the 28v dc hot battery
For Training Purposes Only

bus.
Any time you operate the APU fire handle switches, the APU fire extinguisher
bottle discharges.
The bottle discharge switch on the P28 panel uses break-away lockwire.
This wire protects against accidental operation of the fire extinguisher squib.
Broken wire shows switch movement and possible squib operation.

APU FIRE EXT TEST - DESCRIPTION

Description
When you set the EXT TEST switch to the l position, power goes to the voltage
regulator in the overheat/fire protection panel.
The voltage regulator decreases the voltage to a level that will not cause a
squib explosion.
The signal from the voltage regulator closes all four switches and arms the
control circuit.
When the switches close the low voltage from the regulator goes to the bottle
squibs.
If the signal finds continuity, the control circuit causes the related bottle test
light come on.

Training Information Point

The fire extinguishing system electrically connects to the 28v dc hot battery

FIRE EXTINGUISHING
26−20

LAVATORY FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM

General
The lavatory fire extinguishing system provides fire extinguishing for the lava-
tory waste compartment by flooding the compartment with inert gas.
The fire extinguishing agent is non−corrosive.
There are no special inspection or cleaning procedures required if the agent is
discharged when there is no fire in the lavatory.
The system is a heat−activated extinguisher bottle and a temperature indicator.

Fire Extinguisher Bottle

The bottle is a steel container, about 2.5 inches in diameter with volume of
approximately 10 cubic inches, with discharge tubes, fusible tips, and mounting
bracket. The container is filled with freon.
The fire extinguisher bottle is mounted inside the lavatory cabinet.

Temperature Indicator
The temperature indicator is a thin vinyl plate containing four heat sensitive
patches.
Each patch changes color from grey to black when exposed to temperatures
from 180 to 250° F.
The temperature indicator is inside the lavatory cabinet.
Operation
The extinguisher bottle contains two fusible tips with melting temperature of
174° F.
When fire or overheat occurs in the lavatory waste compartment raising the
ambient temperature above 174° F, the temperature indicator will change color
For Training Purposes Only

and the fusible tips will melt, causing the bottle to discharge.

Smoke Detectors
The smoke detetcors are self contained, microprocessor controlled, continuosly
monitored, ambient type detectors.
They require no forced airflow over the sensing element.
The Forward Cargo Compartment is equipped with four detectors,
operating in 2 loops.
The four detetctors are installed in two enclosures.
Each enclosure contains an A loop and B loop detector.

The Aft Cargo Compartment is equipped with six detectors,

opertating in 2 loops.
The six detetctors are installed in three enclosures.
Each enclosure contains an A loop and B loop detector.
Each detector operates independently of the others and provides the control
panel with signals for smoke condition and fault status.
In addition, because each detector is independent of the others, they can be
replaced individually.
Each enclosure assembly features guard bars to protect the detectors from
cargo and baggage.

LOWER CARGO FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM
General
The Cargo Compartment Fire Suppression System features Halon 1301.
Its suppression ability is based on the theory of breaking the chain of reaction
for a fire, by preventing the fuel source(s) and oxygen from combining in the
presence of heat.
The system operates in conjunction with the Cargo Compartment Smoke
Detection System.
The system is capable of suppressing a fire in either the Forward or Aft Cargo
Compartment for at least 60 minutes from initial activation.
NOTE: Although in some instances it may extinguish a fire, it is important to
note the system design is only intended to suppress the spread of fire long
enough to allow the aircraft to safely land and evacuate.
The suppression system is compromised of:
a Control Panel (the same panel for the detection system)
 two Extinguishing Bottles
 a Diverter Valve
 a Metering Valve
 Delivery Lines and Nozzles.
The first bottle (Ext. Bottle #1) is a high rate bottle. The second bottle
(Ext. Bottle #2) discharge is metered, as to regulate the flow of Halon into the

selected cargo compartment. This metering maintains sufficient Halon con-

centration in the affected compartment to suppress the fire.
