CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

The study sought to find out the difficulties students have in connection with the addition of fraction
with the same denominators at Gnani M/A Primary School, Yendi Northern Region of Ghana. It was
realized that the difficulties students have in the addition of fraction with the same denominators could
be traced to both the teachers and the students. Some students have the perceptions that the studying
of mathematics in general is abstract and have no practical meaning to man’s life.

Some claim that mathematics is highly difficult to understand and demand intellectual activity that is
reserved for only talented people. Other causes of students difficulties in addition and subtraction of
fraction are as follows.

1. The methods used by teachers in teaching addition of fraction of the same denominators are not
suitable for learning.

2. The teachers do not take their time to explain basic concept to students.

3. Poor foundation in mathematics at the basic level.

4. Lack of reference materials for students.

5. The use of ambiguous words in framing leading question to the level of understanding of students.

on the part of teachers.

6. Lack of confidence on the part of students to answer mathematics questions.

These difficulties were indented in the study and solution offered to remedy or rectify the situation. The
researcher on his part has attempted in this study to throw more light on the difficulties pupils
encountered and find ways of solving them.

Conclusion

There is already sufficient body of research to serve as the basis of relieving substantial
importance of educational practice but much more is needed in the study of addition of fractions of the
same denominators. Empirical documentation of effective practice will not be sufficient of effective
improvements.
Compelling research on effective instructional practices is frequently ignored (carmine 1992). The
researcher is convinced that teachers must have at hand effective instructional materials and other
resource.

Teacher must do more work in improving mathematics education themselves. Unfortunately, few
teachers have sufficient time to design and comprehensively evaluate mathematics curricula.

Teachers should use strips of rectangular papers, the girde papers and suggested practical task in solving
addition of fractions of the same denominators and evaluate the strategies to improve performance.

Recommendation

Encourage student to learn mathematics and for that matter fraction very well.

The following are recommendations the research has put forward in connection with the issue at stake
in order to enhance mathematic learning.

The researcher is recommending that there must be a good teacher – pupil relationship.

Teachers should avoid the use of the cane, abusive words, scolding e.t.c to learner especially students
with low ability rate during mathematics lessons.

Also, the teaching method used by the mathematics teachers should be tailed to sustain the interest of
pupils. The use of appropriate T.L.Ms should be enhanced.

The researcher recommends that conscious effort should be made to motivate students in the study of
addition of fractions and mathematics as a whole to determine the benefits that students, school and
country as a whole will derive from the learning of fraction in this technological age.

Then also the researcher recommends that a variety of teaching strategies should be used in the
teaching of addition of fraction with the same denominations instead of traditional passive and rote
learning methods which are predominant in the teaching of mathematics nowadays.

Again, the researcher recommends that certain measures should be adopted to serve as incentives to
Ghana educators to produce the much needed text books just as a graded English and Science course
books that are in the market. The provision of the books would not only bring the students back home
but would also provide easy materials to supplements classroom instruction. Finally, the research
recommends that teachers should explain mathematical concepts well when having lessons with
students.
