WELCOME TO YOUR PRE

CALCULUS SUBJECT
CONIC SECTIONS AND
DEGENERATE CASES

DIANA CLAIRE A. PENA

Subject - teacher
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Discuss and describe the parts of a conic sections.
2. Illustrate the different types of conic sections and
degenerate cases.
3. Determine the eccentricity of conic sections.
4. Apply conic sections and degenerate cases in our real -
life situation.
line
Types of Conic Sections

1. Circle – the conic section

formed by the plane being
parallel to the base of the
cone.

2. Ellipse – the conic section

formed by the plane being at
an angle to the base of the
cone.
Types of Conic Sections

3. Hyperbola – the conic

section formed by the plane
being perpendicular to the
base of the cone.

4. Parabola – the conic

section formed by the pane
being parallel to the cone.
CIRCLE
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After going through this module, you are
expected to
1. Defines circle;
2. Determines the standard form of a circle;
3. Graphs a circle in a rectangular
coordinate system.
A circle is consist of all points on the
plane equidistant from a fixed point
called the center. The distance from the
center to any point on the circle is
constant and is called the radius of the
circle.
Standard Equation of a Circle

the center is at (h, k) or any point in the cartesian plane

(x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2

• center at the origin (0,0)

x2 + y2 = r2

NOTE:
the radius is r (notice that in the equation r is squared)
Exercises 1

Write the equation of a circle given the center

and radius.
• 1. Center (0, 0) and radius = 12
• 2. Center (0, 0) and radius = √5
• 3. Center (0, 0) and radius = 1.5
