SECTION A: MAN IN A CHANGING SOCIETY

1. (a) Briefly explain six problems that were created as a result of industrial revolution in
Europe
- It brought in the use of machines into society
- Many people could not cope with the many problems that accompanied this.
- Many jobs that workers did prior to the industrial age now were done by machines
- Unemployment was high.
- Those who could get work found themselves working under severely unjust
conditions.
- Wages were low
- Sanitary conditions were poor.
- Working hours were long.
- Ventilation in shops was unsatisfactory
- Child labor existed.
- There were no healthy or housing benefits whatsoever for the workers.

(b) (i) Give the content of the passage from the book of Jeremiah in which the Prophet
was not afraid to speak out against the cruel treatment of workers by King
Jehoiakim.

Jeremiah 22:13-17
- Doomed is the man who builds his house by injustice and enlarges it by
dishonesty.
- Who makes his countrymen work for nothing and does not pay their wages.
- Doomed is the one who says,
- I will build myself a mansion with spacious rooms upstairs".
- So he puts windows in his house, panels it with cedar, and paints it red.
- Does it make you a better king if you build houses of cedar, finer than those of
others?

- Your father enjoyed a full life.
- He was always just and fair and he prospered in everything he did.
- He gave the poor a fair trial and all went well with him.
- That is what it means to know the Lord.
- But you can only see your selfish interests.
- You kill the innocent and violently oppress your people.
- The Lord has spoken. [Up to 8]

(ii) You have been promoted to the post of Labour Commissioner at a time companies
are down-sizing their workforce at will, due to hard economic situation, partly as a
result of COVID 19 because they are claiming not to make profits. As a result, the
few workers remaining are over-worked Give six practical examples of how you
can minimize these unjust conditions facing employees in many companies.
- Companies should pay their workers well for them to be productive.
- Companies should diversify production for them to remain in business, viable and
increase their income streams.
- Encourage trade unions to recruit more members so that the interest of workers is
safeguarded.
- Employers should not be selfish, they should have their workers at heart
- Encourage employers to be just and exercise fairness when dealing with the
workers interests.
- Encourage companies to prepare workers for eventualities.
- Let companies sign contracts with the workers

2. (a) Briefly explain six ideas of what Diwali is to a Hindu
- Diwali is the finest of all festivals and certainly the one to which the children look
forward most.
- Diwali celebrates the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness.
- Relatives and neighbours share syrup sweets.
- They set off fireworks and fire crackers.
- From dawn, women prepare thousands of little clay lamps fill them with oil and
wick cotton and place them around the house, on the roof, the window frames,
veranda, by the path, along the street and around the wall.
- Even the poorest have their oil lamps.
- The moment the sun sets the lamps light up the like little stars leading to the
village glory and beauty.

(b) (i) Give the content of the passage from the New Testament book which shows that
total happiness and freedom from all worries we have on here on earth will
come to an end after Christ’s second coming.

Revelation 21:1-4
- Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth.
- The first heaven and the first earth disappeared, and the sea vanished.
- And I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from
God, prepared and ready like a bride dressed to meet her husband.
- I heard a loud voice speaking from the throne.
- Now God's home is with human beings.
- He will live with them, and they shall be his people.
- God himself will be with them, he will be their God.
- He will wipe away all tears from their eyes.
- There will be no more death, no more grief or crying or pain.
- The old things have disappeared. [Up to

(ii) Mange has just lost a lot of relatives due to the COVID 19 pandemic. This
worries him so much. With reference to the Bible passage above, what advice
would you give to a Christian friend like Mange who has had many misfortunes in
life that have become a source of constant worry.

- He should not worry because God promised to help us in difficulties times.


- The problems we are experiencing in this life will end.
- He should seek God, the source of peace
- He should commit himself in prayer to God.
- He should understand that God is with him.
- There will be a fresh start in his life
- God will wipe his tears and make him happy again

SECTION B: ORDER AND FREEDOM IN SOCIETY


Answer only one question from this section

3. (a) List some six problems in the world today.


- Divisions into race, color, tribe, creed etc
- Wars leading to a lot of refugees.
- Poverty, hunger, crime, ignorance.
- Disease e.g. AIDS, malaria, COVID 19 etc.
- Lack of democracy
- Over population, pollution, neglected resources
- Gender issues; oppression of women [6]

(b) (i) Give the content of the Bible passage from the book of Kings in which King Ahab
used his position to commit injustice
1 Kings 21: 1-21

- Near King Ahab’s’ palace in Jezreel there was a vineyard owned by Naboth.
- Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me or sell me your vineyard; I want it for a vegetable
garden.”
- Naboth replied, “No, I inherited this vineyard from my ancestors.”
- Ahab was depressed and angry; he would not eat.
- His wife, Jezebel asked, “Why are you depressed and won’t eat?”
- Ahab told his wife that, Naboth would not sell him, his vineyard.
- Jezebel replied, “Cheer up, eat; will get you the vineyard.
- She then forged a letter as coming from Ahab and sent it to officials and leading citizens
of Jezerel.
- It read, “Proclaim a fast; give Naboth a place of honour at a gathering….
- Have him accused of cursing God and the king and then stone him to death.”
- All this was done.
- Jezebel said to Ahab, “Naboth is dead; go and take his vineyard.”
- At once Ahab went to the vineyard to take possession of it.
- Then the lord said to Prophet Elijah “Go to King Ahab and tell him what I the lord say to
him; “After murdering the man are you taking his property as well?
- This is what I the lord say… “In the very place that the dogs licked up Naboths’ blood,
they will lick up your blood.
- When Ahab saw Elijah he said; have you caught up with me, my enemy?
- Elijah said to Ahab “you have been doing wrong.
- You and every male in your family will die; young and old alike.
(ii) The Chief Executive Officer at Kavalamanja Enterprise is very boastful and does not
respect anyone both at his company and in the community where he lives. With
reference to the passage above, illustrate with six examples how the Chief Executive
Officer at Kavalamanja can behave in the same way like the leader mentioned in the
above passage.

- By being corrupt.
- By grabbing land or plots from innocent citizens dubiously.
- By not caring for widows and orphans.
- By effecting uncalled for deductions on his workers’ wages.
- By oppressing his people with too much work
- By not being honest in his dealings.
- By killing in a bid to get what he wants.

4. (a) List and describe three ways a person became a Leader in Zambian Tradition.
- By divine right: When one was simply appointed by God
- Through inheritance: This was very much applicable to members from the royal family.
- By elections: This was when people vote for the person, they want to be in authority.

- Through Heroism: Because of some influential or intelligential forcefulness some people
became leaders.
- Special abilities: When one is of special powers e.g. Chief Monze of the Tonga people
had special ability to make rain.

(b) (i) Give the content of a passage from Johns’ Gospel which shows how Jesus
demonstrated his use of authority as service

John 13:1-15
- It was now the day before the Passover festival, Jesus knew that the hour had come for
him to leave this world and go to the father
- He had always loved those who were his own, and he loved go them to the very end.
- Jesus and his disciples were at supper.
- The devil had already put in the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, he thought of
betraying Jesus.
- Jesus knew that the father had given him complete power; he knew that he had come
from God and that he was going to God.
- So he rose from the table, took off his garment and tied the towel around his waist.
- Then he poured the water in the basin and began to wash the feet of his disciples and dry
them with a towel his waist.
- He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “are you going to wash my feet Lord?’
- Jesus answered, “You do not understand what I am doing how but you will understand
later”.
- Peter declared, “Never at any time will you wash my feet”. But my hands and head too,
Peter said.
- Jesus told him, “those who have had a bath are completely clean and do not need to wash
themselves, except their feet.
- All of you are clean except one, for Jesus knew his betrayer. That is why he said all you
are clean.
- After Jesus had washed them, he puts his outer garment back on and returned to his place
at table.
- Do you understand what I have done to you? He answered.
- You call me teacher and Lord, and it is right to do so, because that is what I am.
- I your teacher and Lord has just washed your feet, you, then should wash one another’s
feet.

(ii) Bupe Mutale the former 2019, head girl of Mubanga Chipoya Secondary school
has just been appointed Mayor of Senga District at a tender age. Using ideas
from the above passage explain how Bupe Mutale can be of service to the people
she is leading.

- Once in a while she should visit her people.
- She should fulfill her promises.
- She should be a humble and loving servant to the people.
- She should work with the people instead of delegating all the times.
- She must lead by example.
- She should share in there suffering by being with them.
- She should respond to the needs of the marginalized or weaker people in the society.

SECTION C: LIFE
Answer only one question from this section.

5. (a) State six ideals about the search for happiness.


- Happiness is a sense of inner peace.
- Happiness comes from using one's intelligence to set adequate goals.
- Happiness demands choosing goals in life.
- Happiness is satisfying only the needs consistent with chosen goals
- Happiness is more a by-product than a goal
- Seeking happiness means doing what is right
- To gain happiness brings pleasure

(b) (i) Give the content of the passage from the book of John that shows that Life is a mixture
of joy and sorrow

John 16:16-22
- In a little while you will not see me
- And then a little while later you will see me.
- Some of his disciples asked among themselves, what does this mean? He tells us that in a
little while we will not see him and then a little while later we will see him.
- And he also says, it is because iam going to the Father.
- What does this a little while mean? We don't know what he is talking about.
- Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said to them
- I said in a little while you will not see me, and then a little while later you will see me
- Is this what you are asking about among yourselves?
- Iam telling you the truth: you will cry and weep, but the world will be glad;
- You will be sad, but your sadness will turn into gladness.
- When a woman is about to give birth, she is sad because her hour of suffering has come,
- but when the baby is born, she forgets her suffering because she is happy that a baby has
been born into the world.
- That is how it is with you: now you are sad, but I will see you again, and your hearts will
be filled with gladness, the kind of gladness that no one can take away from you.

(b) (ii) Jennifer lost both parents in a road accident in Kitwe. She was taken to the village
together with her young brothers by their auntie. At the village, they struggled a lot.
Using the above passage, state six pieces of advice you can give to the pupils who have
been going through a lot of suffering like Jennifer.

- Not to lose faith, it will be well again. It is just for a season.


- Suffering will cause them to work hard e.g. a bright pupil who is poor.
- Suffering will make them to be stronger and be able to stand in life situations.
- Suffering help them turn to God for help and depend on his love.
- They should depend on God who promised to help his people.
- God will turn their suffering to be testimonies for others to know what God can do. [6]

6. (a) Explain six concepts of time that underlies Samsara in Hinduism. [6]

(b) (i) Give the content of two Bible passages, one from Daniel which shows the
Hebrews understanding of life after death and the other from Revelation which
explains the joys of life after death.

Daniel 12:1-3
- The angel wearing linen clothes said,
- "At that time the great angel Michael, who guards your people, will appear.
- Then there will be a time of troubles,
- The worst since nations first came into existence.
- When that time comes, all the people of your nation whose names are written in God's
book will be saved.
- Many of those who have already died will live again.
- Some will enjoy eternal life, and some will suffer eternal disgrace.
- The wise leaders will shine with all the brightness of the sky.
- And those who have taught many people to do what is right will shine like the stars for
ever."

Revelation 22:1-5
- The angel also showed me the river of the water of life, sparkling like crystal, and coming
from the throne of God and of the Lamb and flowing down the middle of the city's street.
- On each side of the river was the tree of life, which bears fruit twelve times a year, once
each month and its, leaves are for the healing of the nations.
- Nothing that is under God's curse will be found in the city.
- The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city and his servants will worship him.
- They will see his face and his name will be written on their foreheads.
- There shall be no more night and they will not need lamps or Sunlight because the Lord
God will be their light
- And they will rule as kings for ever and ever.

(ii) Your Religious Education teacher has given you an assignment to investigate on death in
Zambia particularly your district. Your findings show that most of the people fear death.

Briefly give six concrete examples that show that there is life after death.
- Jesus was raised from death.
- God loves us and he cannot abandon us.
- From long ago people have always believed in the life after death
- All religions spoke about life after death
- There are personal experiences about life after death.
- Jesus taught that those who believed in him will live again even if they died.

SECTION D: MAN AND WOMAN


7(a) Briefly explain how more freedom among boys and girls could be one reason why the
young resent their parents arranged marriages
- In the past free association between boys and girls was not allowed.
- Today, opportunities for boys and girls to go to school together, work together and meet
together are common.
- Boys and girls have the chance of getting to know one another.
- Boys and girls correspond with one another by letter.
- Family arrangements of marriages is strongly resented
- The young insist on personal choice of a marriage partner.
- The younger generation feel that the extended family can be a source of strain and
tension today [Up to 6]

(b) (ii) Give the content of a passage from 1 Corinthians which teaches mutual trust and self-
giving
1 Corinthians 7:1-7

- Now, to deal with the matters you wrote about.


- A man does well not to marry. But because there is so much immorality, every man
should have his own wife, and every woman should have her own husband.
- A man should fulfil his duty as a husband, and a woman should fulfil her duty as a wife,
and each should satisfy the other's needs.
- A wife is not the master of her own body, but her husband is; in the same way a husband
is not the master of his own body, but his wife is.

- Do not deny yourselves to each other, unless you first agree to do so for a while in order
to spend your time in prayer;
- but then resume normal marital relations. In this way you will be kept from giving in to
Satan's temptation because of your lack of self-control.
- I tell you this not as an order, but simply as a concession.
- Actually I would prefer that all of you were as I am; but each one has a special gift from
God, one person this gift, another one that gift.

(B) (ii) Sibwibwi married Suzen in a colourful church wedding that became a talk of the
town. However, after staying in marriage for two years, they began quarrelling with each
other. Explain any six problems that may occur in a marriage relationship if there is no
trust between the couple.

- Couple may decide to divorce


- There will be no proper communication between husband and wife
- Negative feelings may develop towards each other
- Mistrust may develop as there will be continuous suspicion between the two
- There will be no respect
- There will be no peace in the marriage
- Happiness will diminish in their marriage [Up to 6]

8 (a) List six changes that have taken place in the pattern of family life in Zambia today
- Urban dwellers appreciate yet resent the size of the extended family.
- Tribal groupings can help or retard development.
- Urban marriages tend to be unstable.
- Husbands and wives often do not share many areas of their lives together.
- New demand for a higher quality of relationship within the family.
- The high level of prostitution puts family fidelity under strain.

(b) (i) Give the content of the passage from Genesis that explain the importance of monogamy

GENESIS 2:18-24
- Then the lord said, it is not good for the man to live alone.
- I will make a suitable companion to help her.
- So he took some soil from the ground and formed all the animals and all the birds.
- Then he brought them to the man and he named them.
- But no one was suitable companion to help him.
- Then the Lord made the man to fall into the deep sleep.
- And while he was sleeping, he took out one of the man’s rib and closed the fresh.
- He formed a woman out of the rib and brought to him.
- Then h man said, at least here is one of my own kind.
- Born taken from my born and fresh from my fresh.

- Woman is her name because she was taken out of man.
- That is why a man lives his father and mother and units with his wife and they become
one.
- The man and the woman were both naked but were not embarrassed.
(ii) Simpombo met Dorica on the Facebook, they loved each other and exchanged photos. In
a few months’ time, they got married. However, after staying in marriage for one year,
they divorced. Give six ideas on why divorce is common in family life in Zambia.
- A man and woman getting married without first being suitable.
- Entering marriage for money
- Sometimes two people stay with their in- law who interfere with their marriage.
- Couples not sharing but each one keeping his/her own secrets
- Lack of communication between the couple
- Due to unfaithfulness

SECTION E: MAN’S RESPONSE TO GOD THROUGH FAITH AND LOVE

9 (a) EITHER
(i) Using traditional names, give six attributes of God.[6]
- Nyamvula: The one who secretes rain (T)

(b) (i) Give the content of a passage from the Gospel of Luke which shows that in our
search for God we ought to be open.
LUKE 11:29-32
- As people crowded Jesus, he went on to say
- How evil are the people of this day
- They ask for a miracle but none will be given to them except the miracles of Jonah
- In the same way that prophet Jonah was a sign for the people of Nineveh

- So the son of man will be a sign for the people of this day
- On the judgment day the queen of Sheba will stand up and accuse the people to day
- Because she travelled all the way from her country to listen to King Solomon’s wise
teaching
- And I tell you there is something here greater than Solomon
- On judgment day the people of Nineveh will stand up and accuse you
- because they turned from their sins when they heard Jonah preach
- And I assure you that there is something here greater than Jonah

(ii) Chilekwa was a grade 12 at Njeke Secondary School. He was a committed


Christian and always prayed to God that He may give him good results. However,
just after writing his final examination, Chilekwa stopped going to church. Using
the above teachings give six examples what would prevent a Zambian from
truly searching for God like Chilekwa.
- Enjoying good healthy
- Having a well-paying job
- Some young people who are thinking that they are still young too die may even
forget about God.
- Thinking that they are well educated
- A businessman who is doing well in business may not search God
- Being successful in life. [up to 6]

10 (a) Show briefly how the practice of GNOSTICISM was a way of evading God.
- Salvation is acquired through knowledge and experience of the spirit.
- All matter was evil; only spirit was good.
- The world was evil as it was made of matter.
- The Jewish Yahweh must also be evil as he created the world.
- The body (matter) was also evil
- Jesus himself was a pure spirit and so could not have a material body.
- His body was only an illusion
- Men are saved through gnosis of the secret spiritual truth which Jesus revealed.

(b) (i) Give the content of a passage from the Gospel of Matthew that urges people to have
complete trust in God
Matthew 7: 7-11
- Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to
you.
- For everyone who asks will receive and anyone who seeks will find and the door will be
opened to those who knock.
- Would any one of you who are fathers give your son a stone when he asks for bread?
- Or would you give him a snake when he asks for fish?
- Bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children
- How much more then will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him.

(b) (ii) Kapolyo has a good job that is paying him very well. He rings his friends and boasts
about it. He says, “I am buying myself a new car, a house, clothes and I will be eating
from nice lodges every day”. This worries his friends who have not secured their
employment. Some even withdraw from praying. With reference to the passage above,
explain in six ways how Christians can have complete trust in God

- Asking for their needs from God


- Seek from God who promised to give us.
- They should strive to do God’s will even in difficult times.
- Use their talents with the hope that God will reward them.
- Use their skill to better their lives
- They can create their own on employment and earn from it a better living
