V- Bending
7.1. DEFINITION:

V-bending is the most common sheet metal bending method. As its name implies, the v-bending
method employs a v-shaped die and a punch to bend metals at desired angles. The v-shaped
punch forces the sheet metal workpiece into the “v-shaped” groove in the die, forming sheet
metals with different bend angles.Die and punch are used for bending. If a v shaped die and
punch are used, the bending is called v-bending. If the sheet is bent on the edge using a wiping
die it is called edge bending.

7.2. Methods of V-bending:

V-bending is the most common bending method using a punch and die. It has three subgroups

 Bottoming
Bottoming is a bending process in which sheet metal is pressed against a bottom die
featuring a V shape. While other bending processes typically support the use of both U- and V-
shaped dies, bottoming only uses a V-shaped die. In bottoming, the sheet is forced against the V
opening in the bottom tool.
 Air bending
Air bending is quite similar to the V-bending method: it relies on v-shaped punch and die to
bend sheet metals. However, unlike the conventional v-bending process, the punch in the air
bending method does not force the sheet into the bottom of the cavity.
 Coining.
Also using a press brake is the bending process known as coining. Coining is a high-
performance bending process that's characterized by greater force. Like air bending, it
compresses sheet metal between a top die and a bottom die.
7.3. Types of Bending Machine

There are many types of bending machines,

 Metal sheet bending machine

 Bus-bar bending-cutting-punching machine
 Hydraulic and mechanical Profile bending machine
 Hydraulic hand
 Motorized pipe bending machine
 Sheet folding machine
 Sheet metal bending machine
 Pipe bending machine

method employs a v-shaped die and a punch to bend metals at desired angles. The v-shaped
punch forces the sheet metal workpiece into the “v-shaped” groove in the die, forming sheet

7.5. Advantages:

One of the main advantages of these machines is the fact that even when used at maximum
capacity they have high precision and allows for rapid production as well. These machines
are very accurate and easy to use. There is a high level of automation hence it does not require
very high skill level to operate it.

7.6. Disadvantages:

Since a large amount of metal is used in the construction, a Crumple-zone can be incorporated
into the design. Disadvantages include its weight, due to the large amount of metal used.
Space-Frame and a Monocoque are suitable for the current application.
