Project :

1. PURPOSE & SCOPE

The purpose of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) for cables is to install cables underground without disturbing the surface, reducing environmental impact, and minimizing disruption
to existing infrastructure. The HDD method allows for cables to be installed under roads, railways, rivers, and other areas where traditional trenching methods may not be feasible or
practical.

2. DEFINATION & ABBREVIATION

1. Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD): A trenchless method of drilling underground that allows for the installation of pipes or cables without the need for trenching. The HDD
method involves drilling a borehole at a shallow angle and then pulling the pipe or cable through the borehole.

2. Borehole: A hole drilled in the ground using a drilling rig or other equipment. In the context of HDD, the borehole is drilled horizontally to install pipes or cables underground.

3. Reaming: The process of enlarging a borehole to a larger diameter using a reamer or back reamer. Reaming is typically done after the borehole is drilled to the desired depth and
before the cable or pipe is pulled through the borehole.

4. Pullback: The process of pulling the cable or pipe through the borehole using a pulling head and winch system. Pullback typically occurs after the borehole has been drilled and
reamed to the desired diameter.

5. Drilling fluid: A liquid mixture used during the drilling process to lubricate the drill head, stabilize the borehole, and carry drilling cuttings to the surface. Drilling fluids can be
water-based or oil-based and can include various additives to improve performance.

6. Backfill: The process of filling in the borehole with soil or other materials after the cable or pipe has been installed. Backfilling is done to provide support and stability to the
cable or pipe and to protect it from damage.

7. Pulling head: A specialized tool attached to the end of the cable or pipe used to pull it through the borehole. The pulling head is typically attached to a winch system that pulls
the cable or pipe through the borehole.

8. Reamer: A specialized tool used to enlarge a borehole to a larger diameter. Reamers are typically used in HDD to ensure that the borehole is large enough to accommodate the
cable or pipe being installed.

9. Back reamer: A specialized type of reamer used in HDD that is designed to pull drilling cuttings back to the entry point of the borehole. Back reamers are used to reduce the
amount of cuttings left in the borehole and to help stabilize the borehole walls.

3. REFRENCE

1. Project Specifications: This document outlines the technical requirements and specifications for the project, including the diameter and length of the borehole, the type of cable
or pipe to be installed, and any other relevant technical details.

2. Design Drawings: Design drawings provide detailed plans for the HDD project, including the borehole design, drilling equipment, and installation details. The drawings may
include site plans, cross-sections, and schematics of the drilling equipment.

3. Environmental Permits: Depending on the location of the project, various environmental permits may be required to ensure that the project complies with local regulations.
These permits may include permits for wetlands, waterways, and other environmentally sensitive areas.

4. Safety Plans: Safety plans outline the safety protocols and procedures that will be followed during the project, including personal protective equipment requirements, hazard
communication, emergency response plans, and other safety-related topics.

5. Construction Schedule: A construction schedule outlines the timeline for the project, including the start and end dates, milestones, and key activities. The construction schedule
may be updated regularly to reflect changes in the project timeline.

6. Material Specifications: Material specifications provide details about the materials that will be used for the project, including the type and quality of the cable or pipe, drilling
fluids, and backfill materials.

7. Inspection and Testing Plan: An inspection and testing plan outlines the procedures and frequency of inspections and testing that will be conducted throughout the project,
including drilling equipment inspections, cable or pipe testing, and other quality control measures.

4. RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Project Manager: The project manager is responsible for overall project management, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and communication with stakeholders. The
project manager ensures that the project is completed on time, within budget, and to the satisfaction of the client.

2. Design Engineer: The design engineer is responsible for designing the borehole, selecting drilling equipment and materials, and ensuring that the project meets design
specifications. The design engineer may work with other engineers or consultants to develop a comprehensive design plan.

3. Field Supervisor: The field supervisor is responsible for supervising the drilling crew and ensuring that the drilling process is carried out safely and efficiently. The field
supervisor monitors the drilling progress, provides guidance to the crew, and ensures that all safety and environmental regulations are being followed.

4. Drilling Crew: The drilling crew is responsible for operating the drilling equipment, including the drilling rig, drill pipe, and drilling fluid systems. The crew is responsible for
maintaining the equipment, monitoring drilling progress, and ensuring that the drilling process is carried out safely and efficiently.

5. Pullback Crew: The pullback crew is responsible for pulling the cable or pipe through the borehole using a pulling head and winch system. The crew is responsible for ensuring
that the cable or pipe is pulled through the borehole safely and efficiently and that the borehole is properly backfilled after the pullback is completed.

6. Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QC/QA) Inspector: The QC/QA inspector is responsible for inspecting the work at various stages of the project to ensure that it meets quality
standards and design specifications. The inspector may also be responsible for testing the cable or pipe after installation to ensure that it is functioning correctly.

7. Safety Officer: The safety officer is responsible for ensuring that all safety regulations are being followed during the project. The safety officer may conduct safety training for the
crew, monitor the work site for safety hazards, and ensure that safety equipment is being used properly.

5. TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

Drilling rig: The drilling rig is selected based on the site conditions, including soil type, rock type, and borehole diameter.
Drill pipe: The drill pipe is chosen based on the borehole design and the length required to reach the other end of the borehole.
Drill head: The drill head is selected based on the soil or rock type, and the desired borehole diameter.
Drilling fluids: Drilling fluids are used to lubricate the drill head and maintain the stability of the borehole.
Other tools: Various other tools are used during the drilling process, including reamers, back reamers, and mud pumps.

6. PROCEDURE

Site Preparation:

Clearing the area: The site where the HDD will take place must be cleared of any debris, trees, and vegetation.
