Pair work - conversation on "What you heard"

After you finished (i) the individual assignment ("Things to prepare before the class - what
you heard"), (ii) the re-ordering quiz ("QUIZ - 04 - Reporting what you heard"), and (iii)
choosing your partner for pair work ("pair-up grouping week 4"), you need to prepare brief
conversation with your pair. Here are some guidelines:

1. Work in pairs
2. Speaking activity (in class): take turns to play Rosie and her friend Nora, who has
just heard some amazing news about what happened in the town from her
neighbour. Use the pictures here to improvise OR prepare a conversation. Try to
include the expressions used in the "QUIZ - 04 - Reporting what you heard" to report
what we have heard and to express belief or disbelief. Then, act out the
conversation.
1. These questions may help you build the conversation: (i) what is the latest
news in the town? (ii) which piece of news is the most difficult to believe? Why?
3. What you submit in this assignment: submit (as a group submission) the
conversation that you prepare (in PDF only).

Rosie : “Hey Nora, let’s sit here and order two cups of tea.”
Nora : “Sure. Are you hungry? Would you like to order something else?”
Rosie : “No thanks.”
Their cups of tea finally arrive and they thank the waiter.
Nora : “Are you sure you do not want to order something else?”
Rosie : “Yes, by the way. Did you hear the news about what happened in the town?”
Nora : “No, I didn’t. What happened?”
Rosie : “I heard from my neighbor that few weeks ago, Asep; my old friend won a 2
million dollars lottery.
Nora : “I have heard it too and some people actually reckon that it must be a mistake
because how could he win that lottery?”
Rosie : “Yeah, I thought the same too but then I think this year is his lucky year.”
Nora : “Yeah, maybe. But have you heard the latest news in our town, it is about the
bus accident few days ago?”
Rosie : “Oh, God! Yes, I’ve heard it too. I heard that there has been an accident and it
seems that everybody saw the accident.”
Nora : “The bus went crazy and apparently, the driver was injured.”
Rosie : “Poor the driver, he probably has a trauma after having that accident.”
Nora : “Maybe.”
Rosie : “But did you know about our friend; Sophie she really has a crocodile as her
pet!”
Nora : “How did you know that?”
Rosie : “I saw it by myself. I saw her walking her pet at the park and I was surprise after
seeing her with a huge crocodile. It’s been blown out of proportion.”
Nora : “Oh and about that new hotel which was built few months ago. It surprisingly
cost 1000 dollars per night. Are they out of their mind?”
Rosie : “Well, I personally will never go to that hotel.”
Nora : “Yeah, me too.”
Rosie : “Let’s go back to our friend; Sophie. Did you know that she has triplets?”
Nora : “Are you sure? Wow, I couldn’t believe it.”
Rosie : “Congratulations for her though, she got what she wanted. She always said she
wanted twins.”
Nora : “Yeah, it is such a good news. How did you know?”
Rosie : “Her husband; Nico told me about it. He gossiped around.”
Nora : “ Wow, I thought he’s not the type to spread gossip. But! Did you know about
the bad news that happened in our town? About the bank that was being robbed by the thieves?”
Rosie : “Yes, I did! Someone actually said that the police had arrived immediately after
an old lady called the police.”
Nora : “Luckily, they answered the phone call and went to the bank right away. If the
police actually didn’t take no notice of what she said, the thieves would escape.”
Rosie : “Glad to know that.”
Nora : “But hey, I think this news will surprise you.”
Rosie : “What? Don’t tell me that it is about the UFO that was flying above us?”
Nora : “Yes!”
Rosie : “It was an unusual thing, right? This news is the most difficult thing to believe.”
Nora : “Yeah, I didn’t even know UFO exist. Someone actually took a picture of the
UFO and upload it on the social media. People went crazy.”
Rosie : “Well, it was a very odd thing. I hope it’s actually not a bad sign.”
Nora : “I hope so. Let’s just stop talking about it.”
Rosie : “I agree, do you want to take a picture? I will take if for you.”
Nora : “Okay, sure.”
