I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:
1. define and describe union, intersection, and complement of sets;
2. use Venn diagram to represent the union, intersection, and complement of sets; and
3. perform the set operations: union, intersection, and complement of sets.

animals according to their HABITAT using the Venn Diagram then do the
tasks that follow.

Group A (Animals that live on land) and Group B (Animals that live in

3. ABSTRACTION (Time allotment: 5 minutes)

A set is a well – defined collection of different objects. Any objects


such as numbers, people, letters of the alphabet and symbols can make up a
set.

The universal set contains all the elements being considered in a


given situation.

The union of sets is the set of all elements found in both sets. The
union of A and B, denoted by A U B and read as “A union B”, is the set of all
elements belonging to either of the sets or in both. It is the result of adding or
combining the elements of two or more sets.

The intersection of sets A and B, denoted by A ∩ B, is the set of all


elements common to both sets A and B. Sets with no common elements are
called disjoint sets.

The complement of set A, denoted by A’, is the set of elements that


are not in set A but in the universal set.
