hace unos años. O quizás simplemente
entiendes muy bien ya, pero el resultado es el
mismo: los pódcasts para los principiantes te
parecen demasiado fáciles, y quieres un reto
(a challenge). ¡Pues aquí está!

My name is César, I am a Spanish teacher
from Spain and in this podcast we are going
to help you learn Spanish if you are a “false
beginner” or in Spanish, a false beginner.
Perhaps you speak or have studied another
European language, or even studied Spanish,
but a few years ago. Or maybe you just
understand [it] very well already, but the
result is the same: podcasts for beginners
seem too easy for you, and you want a
challenge. Well here it is!
I already have another podcast, for
intermediate level students, if you are
interested. It's called Intermediate Spanish
Podcast. In this new adventure I am not alone,
I am accompanied by Englishman. How are
you?
I: Estoy muy bien, César. Gracias. ¿Qué tal, tú?
C: Estoy genial. Muy contento de empezar,
comenzar este pódcast contigo, la verdad.
Creo que tenemos que decirle a la persona
que nos escucha quién eres, y por qué
puedes ayudarle a aprender y a mejorar su
español.
I: Bueno, yo también soy profesor, como tú,
César. Soy profesor de idiomas también,
aunque no el español. Además, también me
gusta aprender idiomas. Soy inglés, como se
nota en mi acento, y empecé a aprender
español hace algunos años. Me gusta mucho
el idioma y espero que mi experiencia y los
errores que he cometido puedan ayudar a
otros estudiantes como yo.
C: Bueno, inglés, tú hablas muy bien español,
tú no eres un “false beginner”, eres un
estudiante avanzado. Pero cuéntame, ¿por
qué no nos dices tu nombre real?
I: Soy un poco tímido, la verdad. Creo que
prefiero que me llames el inglés por el
momento. ¡Quiero guardar mi anonimato!
C: ¡Qué misterioso! (risas)
C: Bueno inglés, hoy hemos venido a hablar
de la paella y de lo que pasó cuando
conociste a mi madre. El inglés y yo somos
novios, es decir, tenemos una relación
sentimental, y vivimos juntos en Londres, en
Inglaterra. Hace 5 años viajamos a España y el
inglés conoció a mi familia. Para una ocasión
tan especial mi madre cocinó paella. Yo soy
de Valencia, la región de España donde el
plato más típico es la paella, la paella
valenciana. ¿Recuerdas la receta de esta
paella?
I: I'm very well, Cesar. Thank you. How are you?
C: I'm great. Very happy to start, start this
podcast with you, really. I think we have to tell
the person who is listening to us who you are,
and why you can help them learn and improve
their Spanish.
I: Well, I'm also a teacher, like you, César. I am a
language teacher too, although not Spanish.
Besides, I also like to learn languages. I am
English, as you can tell by my accent, and I
started learning Spanish a few years ago. I really
like the language and I hope that my experience
and the mistakes I have made can help other
students like me.
C: Well, Englishman, you speak Spanish very
well, you are not a “false beginner”, you are an
advanced student. But tell me, why don't you tell
us your real name?
I: I'm a bit shy, really. I think I prefer that you call
me the Englishman for the time being. I want to
maintain my anonymity!
C: How mysterious! (laughs)
C: Well Englishman, today we have come to talk
about paella and what happened when you met
my mother. The Englishman and I are
boyfriends, that is to say, we have a romantic
relationship, and we live together in London, in
England. 5 years ago we traveled to Spain and
the Englishman met my family. For such a
special occasion my mother cooked paella. I am
from Valencia, the region of Spain where the
most typical dish is paella, the Valencian paella.
Do you remember the recipe for this paella?
I: ¡Sí, la recuerdo! La verdad es que estaba
muy sorprendido cuando vi la paella que
había cocinado tu madre. En mi mente, la
paella española era arroz con marisco. El
marisco son los animales que comemos del
mar. Pero esa paella que vi en la mesa era
algo muy diferente.
C: Muchas personas se sorprenden cuando
descubren la receta original de la paella, la
receta tradicional. Cuéntanos, ¿qué llevaba la
paella?, ¿qué ingredientes llevaba?
I: Lo que más me impactó fueron los
caracoles o como dicen los franceses, los
“escargot”. Nunca pensé que iba a encontrar
caracoles en una paella.
C: Yo tengo que decir que nunca los he
probado, nunca los he comido con la paella.
La idea me parecía un poco repugnante, es
un animal muy viscoso. ¡Argg! Ahora no como
ningún animal porque soy vegano, es decir,
no como nada de origen animal.
I: ¿Por qué los veganos siempre tenéis que
decir que sois veganos? (risas)
C: ¡Qué tonto eres! (risas) Bueno, ¿hay algo
más de la receta que te llamó la atención, que
te sorprendió?
I: ¡Por supuesto! También aluciné cuando tu
madre me dijo que había tres tipos de carne
en la paella; pollo (chicken), conejo (rabbit) y
pato (duck).
C: El conejo es otro animal que nunca he
comido, que nunca he probado. A los
españoles les gusta mucho. ¿Es frecuente
comerlo en Reino Unido?
I: Yes, I remember it! The truth is that I was
very surprised when I saw the paella that your
mother had cooked. In my mind, Spanish
paella was rice with seafood. Seafood is the
animals that we eat from the sea. But that
paella that I saw on the table was something
very different.
C: Many people are surprised when they
discover the original recipe for paella, the
traditional recipe. Tell us, what did the paella
contain? What ingredients did it contain?
I: What struck me the most were the snails or,
as the French say, the “escargot”. I never
thought I would find snails in a paella.
C: I have to say that I have never tried them, I
have never eaten them with paella. The idea
seemed a bit disgusting to me, it is a very
slimy animal. Argg! Now I don't eat any animal
because I'm vegan; that is, I don't eat anything
of animal origin.
I: Why do vegans always have to say that you
are vegan? (laughs)
C: How silly you are! (laughs) Well, is there
anything else about the recipe that caught
your attention, that surprised you?
I: Of course! I also freaked out when your
mother told me that there were three types of
meat in paella; chicken (chicken), rabbit
(rabbit) and duck (duck).
C: The rabbit is another animal that I have
never eaten, that I have never tried. The
Spanish like it a lot. Is it common to eat it in
the UK?
I: Creo que puedes encontrarlo en alguna
tienda especializada, pero definitivamente no
es frecuente comerlo. No lo vas a encontrar
en Tesco Express, por ejemplo.
C: OK, vale… Y bueno, ese día en el que
conociste a mi familia, no solo aprendiste
sobre la receta original de la paella, sino que
también aprendiste una regla o una norma no
escrita sobre la cultura española, ¿verdad?
I: (risas) Así es.
C: ¿Qué pasó?
I: Bueno, basicamente comí mucho,
demasiado. Tu madre me sirvió un plato de
paella muy grande, lo comí y lo terminé como
un buen inglés educado. Lo comí todo. Ella,
naturalmente, me preguntó si me había
gustado y dije que sí. Me preguntó si quería
más cantidad de paella y yo no sabía que
decir…
C: Pero si estabas lleno tenías que haber
dicho que no, que no querías mucho más,
que habías comido suficiente y que estabas
lleno. Cuando queremos pedir algo a alguien
y ser educados podemos usar la fórmula:
¿Podrías + un verbo? Por ejemplo:
¿Podrías ponerme o servirme un poquito más
de comida, no mucho por favor?
¿Podrías pasarme el pan, por favor?
¿Podrías decirme dónde está esa calle, por
favor?
I: ¡Lo sé! Bueno, lo sé ahora, pero en ese
momento no quería parecer maleducado. Fue
la primera vez que veía a tu madre. Pensaba
que decir no a su oferta era maleducado, y
quería gustarle a tu madre. Así que dije que sí
y ella me sirvió otro plato entero. ¡Y lo
terminé! Y en ese momento me empezaba a
doler el estomago. Y ella me preguntó otra
vez si quería más.
C: ¡Ay, Dios mío! ¿Y qué dijiste?
I: I think you can find it in some specialized
shop(s), but it is definitely not eaten often. You
won't find it at Tesco Express, for example.
C: OK, okay… And well, that day that you met
my family, you not only learned about the
original paella recipe, but you also learned a
rule - or an unwritten custom - about Spanish
culture, right?
I: (laughs) That's right.
C: What happened?
I: Well, basically I ate a lot, too much. Your
mother served me a very large plate of paella,
I ate it and finished it like a good polite
Englishman. I ate it all. Naturally she asked me
if I had liked it and I said yes. She asked me if I
wanted more paella and I didn't know what to
say...
C: But if you were full you should have said
no, that you didn't want much more, that you
had eaten enough and that you were full.
When we want to ask someone for something
and to be polite we can use the formula:
Could you + a verb? For example:
Could you put or serve me a little more food,
not very much please?
Could you pass me the bread, please?
Could you tell me where that street is, please?
Me: I know! Well, I know now, but at the time I
didn't want to seem rude. It was the first time
I met [saw] your mother. I thought saying no
to her offer was rude, and I wanted your
mother to like me. So I said yes and she
served me another whole plate. And I finished
it! And at that moment my stomach started to
hurt. And she asked me again if I wanted
more.
C: Oh my God! And what did you say?
I: Pues le dije que sí pero obviamente dije que
solo quería un poco más, que solo tenía
espacio para un poquito más. Y de nuevo me
sirvió otro plato. Yo estaba muy muy muy
lleno así que tuve que decir que no. ¡Estaba
muy lleno, iba a explotar! (risas)
C: Bueno, ahora ya lo sabes, pero España
tiene una cultura bastante directa. Los
británicos habláis de una forma más indirecta,
pero los españoles no. Está bien si dices que
no quieres comer más, porque en caso
contrario, van a continuar ofreciéndote
comida, como ya sabes. Yo soy muy español
en ese aspecto. Si cocino algo para invitados
tengo miedo de que tengan hambre así que
les ofrezco constantemente más y más
comida.
I: ¡Sí! Estoy de acuerdo. Ya he aprendido mi
lección. Por cierto (by the way), por cierto,
hablando de esto me he acordado de lo que
hay que hacer en China con la comida. Viví en
China unos meses y aparentemente es de
buena educación dejar en el plato un poco de
comida. Es un signo de que primero estás
lleno de comida, no puedes comer más, te
han dado suficiente comida, y por otro lado
de que te ha gustado la comida porque la has
comido casi toda.
C: ¡Interesante! No lo sabía. Quizás en otro
episodio nos puedes hablar de tus
experiencias en China aprendiendo el chino.
I: ¡Pues sí! Me encantaría. Es una buena idea.
I: Well I said yes but obviously I said I just
wanted a little more, that I only had room for
a little more. And again she served me
another plate. I was very very very full so I had
to say no. I was so full, I was going to explode!
(laughs)
C: Well, now you know, but Spain has quite a
direct culture. The British speak in a more
indirect way, but the Spanish do not. It's okay
if you say you don't want to eat anymore,
because if not, they're going to continue to
offer you food, as you already know. I am very
Spanish in that aspect. If I cook something for
guests I am afraid that they will be hungry so I
constantly offer them more and more food.
I: Yes! I agree. I have already learned my
lesson. By the way (by the way), by the way,
talking about this I have remembered what
you need to do in China with food. I lived in
China for a few months and apparently it's
polite to leave a little food on your plate. It is a
sign that first, you are full (of food), that you
cannot eat more, that you have been given
enough food, and on the other hand that you
liked the food because you have eaten almost
all of it.
C: Interesting! I didn't know that. Maybe in
another episode you can tell us about your
experiences in China learning Chinese.
I: Well yes! I'd love to. It is a good idea.
