TASK:
ASSIGNMENT THREE MATHS FOR SCIENCE
QUESTION
(a)Find the sum of the series 3 + 6 + 11 + ⋯,to 𝑛 terms [10mks]
solution
Sn=3+6+11+18....+nth term
Sn=(12+2)+(22+2)+(32+2)+(42+2).......+(n2+2)
As we can see that the general term is n2+2
So, the nth term is n2+2
Sum of given series upto n terms:
Sn=(12+22+32+42......+n2)+2n
Sn=6n(n+1)(2n+1)+2n
Snn(2n2+3n+13)/6
(b)The sum of 𝑛 terms of a certain series is 3𝑛2 + 10𝑛 for all values

Of 𝑛. Find the 𝑛𝑡ℎ term and show that the series is an

arithmetical progression [10mks]
solution
3n2+10n=n(3n+10)3n2+10n=n(3n+10)
=n2(6n+20)=n2(6n+20)
=n2(20+6(n−1)+6=n2(20+6(n−1)+6
=n2(2(13)+6(n−1)),=n2(2(13)+6(n−1)), it is arithmetic with
first term 13 and common difference 6.

TOTAL:[20MKS]
If the expression 𝑎𝑥4 + 𝑏𝑥3 − 𝑥2 + 2𝑥 + 3 has a remainder 3𝑥 +
5 when it is divided by 𝑥2 − 𝑥 − 2 ,find the values of a and b.
[10mks]
Solution
The remainder: 3x+5
Then x2-x-2 is a factor of ax4+bx3-x2+2x+3-(3x+5)
= ax4+bx3-x2-x-2
Then make x2-x-2 = (x-2) (x+1)=0
X1=2 x2=-1
X2-x-2 is a factor
Then {a (2)4+b (2)3-(2)2-2-2=0}
{a (-1)4+b(-1)3-(-1)2-(-1)-2=0}
=2a+b=1
a- b =1
So a=1
