9.1 DIRECT CURRENT POWER SOURCES

The helicopter's electrical system can be energized by 3 DC power sources:

The STARTER-GENERATOR is driven by the engine and is the normal GEN

power source in flight. It powers the helicopter system and charges the
battery. In the starting phase when it drives the engine, the generator
is powered by the battery or by an external power unit (EPU) and is

LEG_00140_00
working as an electric motor.

The BATTERY provides power on the ground for self-contained engine Distribution busbar
startups and for energizing the systems with the engine shut down. IN
FLIGHT, IT SUPPLIES BACKUP POWER IN CASE OF GENERATOR
FAILURE (for a limited time depending on its charge level)).
BATT EXT PWR
The EXTERNAL POWER UNIT (EPU) can be used instead of the
battery on the ground for engine starting and for running the electrical
tests.

The battery, generator and EPU are controlled, monitored and protected by the following components:

Contactors K4, K5, K6 cut in each generator onto the distribution busbar.
Starting contactor K3 connects the distribution bus to the starter circuit
Pushbutton "BAT-EPU" cuts in the EPU or the battery.
Pushbutton "GEN" cuts in the generator.
TOGGLE SWITCH "EMERG. CUTOFF" is an emergency control cutting out both power sources (battery and genera-
tor) simultaneously, or the EPU if energized.
Pushbuttons "CRANK" and toggle switch "ON/OFF" control respectivly engine cranking and start engine.
Pushbutton "GEN. RESET" is used after an inadvertent cutout to attempt to cut in the generator again.
Relay K1 inhibits excitation and cutin of the generator during engine starting and cranking.
Relay K2 inhibits cutin of the battery and generator when the EPU is energized.
PCB Z1 controls generator cutin and cutout and regulates the generator voltage at 28.5 V ± 0.25 V.
Current sensor MCR (winding) measures the return current to the generator.
Indicator lights "GEN." and "BATT", when lit, denote cutout of the related generator.
Warning light "BATT-TEMP" comes on when the battery internal temperature exceeds 71°C.
Protection PCB Z2, in case of overvoltage (U > 31.5 V), grounds coil "b" of the bistable relay and de-energizes relays
K1 and K4, thus isolating the generator from the PP 12 busbar. Time delay "T" inhibits a reset in case of a permanent
electrical defect.
Voltage and amperage are indicated on the V.E.M.D. via ASU n° 2.

The contactors, relays, voltage regulator, PCBs and sensor are grouped in a functional assembly known as the
ELECTRICAL MASTER BOX.

After an overvoltage, it is possible to revert to the normal

configuration by pressing the "GEN RESET" pushbutton;
this energizes coil a of the bistable relay, which changes
state.
When energized, relay K1 makes contact and the ener-
gized contactor K4 cuts the generator into the system.
Simultaneously the generator excitation is supplied via
resistor R; this resistor limits the excitation current to
prevent another overvoltage that could cause the over-
voltage PCB to isolate the generator once again. Time
delay T of bistable relay coil a inhibits resetting when the
overvoltage is continuous.
