Hunger in La Guajira

Por
Juan Esteban Piedrahita Aristizabal

La Guajira, a region located in northern Colombia, faces a worrying and persistent

challenge: the problem of hunger. This area, characterized by its arid climate and
infertile soils, suffers from chronic food shortages and a lack of access to potable
water. The combination of factors such as drought, desertification and lack of
socioeconomic development has resulted in a humanitarian crisis that especially
affects the vulnerable population, including children and indigenous communities.

Hunger in La Guajira has worsened due to multiple reasons. The lack of rainfall has
caused a decrease in agricultural production, which has negatively impacted food
availability in the region. In addition, extreme weather conditions have affected
livestock, the main source of subsistence for many communities, leading to a
decrease in the availability of meat and dairy products.

According to the most recent official figures consolidated in the Weekly

Epidemiological Bulletin of the National Institute of Health, 2022 ended with the
death from malnutrition of 85 boys and girls under five years of age in La Guajira, the
highest number in recent years, Deaths They have grown due to multiple factors,
such as food shortages, drought, and poor communication between the entities
responsible for national and local order, such as the Presidency, the department's
governorship, and mayoralties, among others.

La Guajira, historically has been one of the departments of the country with the worst
socioeconomic indicators. The percentage of the population with unsatisfied basic
needs (NBI) is 65.2, which places it in the third department with the worst (NBI) after
Chocó and Vichada.

Addressing hunger in La Guajira requires a comprehensive approach. It is essential

to invest in infrastructure, such as irrigation systems and potable water distribution
networks, to improve access to vital resources. In addition, programs that promote
sustainable agriculture and diversify communities' sources of income must be
implemented. It is also crucial to strengthen health and education systems, providing
nutritional support and education on healthy eating practices.
