Summary
Hidden Figures (2016, directed by Theodore Melfi) is a film that would simultaneously encourage and
make the audience infuriated about the injustices that African-American women suffered in their
professional and personal lives. The primary protagonists, Katherine Goble, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy
Vaughan, were all employed at NASA and saw numerous prospects for career advancement; but, their
employers and coworkers did not provide these women sympathy or appreciation since they were all
African-American. In scenes involving "colored" bathrooms, Katherine and her boss Al Harrison will be key
characters in the analysis. Both arguments will be based on Bonevac's approach of first stating a
statement, then offering evidence, and then concluding. Depending on the events depicted in the film,
mainly two rebuttals will be advanced in the essay. While the women's workmates at NASA recognized
their prospects and worked to eradicate discrimination that obstructed African-American women from
being treated as equals to other members of the staff, the film distorted some real-life events and painted
an image of NASA as an inclusive workplace (run by white men) where women of color could succeed.

Mandy Walker, the cinematography director on the movie, oversaw the film's
cinematography. Walker chose to film Hidden Figures on celluloid film material rather
than the now-common digital format in order to portray the story of the mathematicians
as authentically as possible. She spent hours poring over images from the time taken by
Civil Rights photographer Danny Lyon, a young Gordon Parks, and Saul Leiter, the founder
of the so-called "New York School," known for its lush, vibrant street scenes. She
immersed herself in the visual iconography of the early 1960s. She also created two
separate visual settings for the movie to exist in while filming at Morehouse College in
Atlanta, Georgia, which was dressed by production designer Wynn Thomas to imitate
NASA headquarters. They installed small lamps on the desktops because the fluorescent
lighting in the large modern atmosphere has a bad quality.
