Lesson: Reading and Writing Numbers Within Thousands Quarter: First Week: 1

Transfer Goals
The students in the long run and on their own will be able to convert a number that is formed by
digits into a verbal phrase with appropriate methods.
Essential Understanding: Opportunities for counting and ordering objects occur daily in life
Essential Questions: Why study whole numbers and ordinal numbers?
I. Preliminaries
A. Review:
Call on volunteers to do the following:
A. Write two thousand twenty-seven in numeric form.
B. How many digits will you use to write it?
B. Motivation:
Use the quotation to motivate pupils. They will read, analyze, and reflect on the quotation:
“Reading is a basic tool in living a good life.” - Joseph Addison
They will be asked such questions as:
a. Do you agree with this?
b. How would you explain this quote to someone else?
APK: The pupils will be asked to answer the questions on flash cards on number names of
one-digit numbers. They will be asked questions like:
A. What is the number name of 82?
B. Is the number name of 94 - ninety-four?
C. Can you spell the number name of 106?
D. What is the numeral form of seventy-five?
E. Can you use base-10 blocks to show thirty -four?
C. Focus: Reading and Writing Numbers Within Thousands
 Demonstrate to the class how to use a comma or space to separate a group of three-digits
or periods.
 For numbers between 20 and 100, the number words formed by a tens name and a ones
name are hyphenated. For example, 38 is written as thirty-eight.
II. Lesson Development
A. Presentation of Concepts
Students will be able to
 Read and write numbers up to 1,000 in symbols and in words.
Activity 1: Class Activity
The pupils will be grouped into two teams. The teacher will dictate a number, and the first
member of both teams will write the numeral on their whiteboard. The other members of the
team will do the same until everyone in both teams have participated.
Broadening of Concepts:
The teacher will use flash cards in reading number names. Flash a number name and ask a
pupil to write the corresponding number on his or her whiteboard (alloting 5 minutes for this
activity).

How does reading numbers help you in buying things?

Reading and writing numbers are great help in cooking, because we will know how much
ingredients are we going to put on the food based on the recipe.
d. Faith/Biblical passage: James 1:22
“Do not merely listen to God’s word, do what is says.”

III. Evaluation / Assessment:

The pupils will answer Explore and Check Your Understanding orally. The teacher will
guide them to read each number name.

IV. Summary / Action


To end the lesson, ask the pupils to do a “Think-Pair-Share.” Have them exhange ideas
about the concepts they learned on the lesson.

V. Purposive Assignment
BOOK ACTIVITY: The student will answer the Try This Challenge on their Math For Life
Book.
