TO HOLY MARY. (Read Luke 1, 26-38 or John 1,618).

prayed:)
Just as Mary accepted with courage and humility the
invitation to be the Mother of Jesus, so we must accept
with simplicity and decision the call of God to be his

THE VISIT OF MARY TO SAINT ISABEL (Read Luke
1:39-56 or Matthew 11:2-10 or John1:19-28).
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is
prayed:)

Upon learning that her cousin Isabel was in the sixth month
of her pregnancy, Maria immediately went to visit her to
put herself at her disposal. This is a great lesson for us: the
more we love our neighbor, the more we love God.

O Mary, refuge of sinners! We offer this Our Father and

ten Hail Marys for the joy you had when, visiting St.
Elizabeth, you were recognized by her as the Mother of
God, and for having been the intermediary to free the child

THE BIRTH OF JESUS IN A CRIB PORTAL. (Read
Luke 2:1-20 or Matthew 2:1-12).
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is
prayed:)

Who recognized in that child the awaited Messiah? Mary,

Joseph and a few shepherds, humble people who had put
their trust in God.
The same will happen with us: if we are humble and trust
in God, we will feel his presence in our hearts.
O Mary, star of the sea, fixed north of the Church! This
Our Father and ten Hail Marys are offered to you for the

FOURTH JOYFUL MYSTERY

GUIDE: In the fourth joyful mystery we will meditate on:

THE PRESENTATION OF JESUS TO THE TEMPLE.
(Read Luke 2:22-40).
Knights of
Columbus

(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is

prayed:)

According to the Law of Moses, after forty days Jesus was

presented to the temple. In this Mary and Joseph give us an
example in the fulfillment of their religious duties. We too,
if we want to be true Christians, have to comply with God's
law. We can't say we don't have time. If time is enough for
the things of this world, why should it not be enough for
the things of God?

O most pure Mary, who, without being obliged by the law

of purification, presented your most holy Son in the temple,
with the special joy of seeing Him recognized as true God!
We offer this Our Father and ten Hail Marys in
supplication that the soul of our brother (a)

FIFTH JOYFUL MYSTERY

GUIDE: In the fifth joyful mystery, we will meditate on:

JESUS LOST AND FOUND IN THE TEMPLE (Read
Luke 2:41-52).
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is
prayed:)

For Jesus the most important thing was to do the will of the
Father. That is why he stayed in the temple in Jerusalem,
without even telling Mary and Joseph. This teaches us that
God comes first. Therefore, let no one, for the sake of
obedience to men, set aside obedience to God.

O Mary, sure means to find Jesus! We offer you this Our

Father and ten Hail Marys for the joy you had in meeting
your son Jesus in the temple; therefore we beseech you that
the soul of our brother (a) N....................................... and
all those who are in purgatory may have, through your
prayers, the relief of their sorrows and come to look at
Jesus in the temple of his glory. We ask this through Jesus
Christ our Lord.

PEOPLE: Amen, Jesus.

PAINFUL MYSTERIES
(Tuesdays and Fridays)

GUIDE: IN THE FIRST PAINFUL MYSTERY,

we will meditate on: THE PRAYER OF JESUS IN THE
GARDEN
(Read 14, 32-43 or Matthew 26, 36-49 or Luke 22, 39-48).

(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is

prayed:) Although Jesus was the Son of God, he felt the
need to prepare himself for death through prayer. It is
precisely in prayer that Jesus finds the strength to face
suffering with courage. He is an example for us. We will
not be able to overcome the various trials of life if we are
not in the habit of praying. In reality, prayer is the
Christian's strength.

O most sorrowful Mother of Jesus, who, dismissed and

separated from your company, prayed in mortal agony in
the garden, where he was comforted by an angel! This
Knights of

Our Father and ten Hail Marys we offer them to you, so

SECOND SORROWFUL MYSTERY

GUIDE: In the second sorrowful mystery we will meditate

on: THE FLAGELATION OF OUR LORD JESUS
CHRIST (Read Mark 15:12-15 Matthew 27:20-26).
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is
prayed:)
Knights of
Columbus

In our life we are always looking for comforts. And, many

times, in order to obtain more satisfaction, we forget the
Law of God. Jesus had to pay for all these sins by
scourging, which transformed his whole back into an
immense sore.

O Mary, sea of sorrows! We offer this Our Father and ten

Hail Marys in memory of the immense pain you felt, seeing
the Son of your womb naked and cruelly scourged; through
Him we beseech you to intercede so that the soul of our
brother (a) N..................... and all those who are in
Purgatory, may be freed from their sufferings.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

THIRD SORROWFUL MYSTERY

GUIDE: In the third sorrowful mystery we will meditate

on: THE CROWNING WITH THORNS OF OUR LORD
JESUS CHRIST. (Read Mark 15:16-20 or Matthew 27:27-
31).

(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is

prayed:)
Pride has always been the cause of many sins. To pay for
our sins of pride. Jesus accepted the humiliation of being
crowned with thorns, as a king of mockery. If we want to
live as true Christians, we have to fight against pride and
arrogance. How many quarrels and how many grudges can
be avoided through humility!

O Mary, rose among thorns! We offer you these Our

Fathers and ten Hail Marys in atonement for the pain you
suffered when you saw your Son, stricken and crowned
with thorns; we beg you that, through this pain, the soul of
our brother (a) N........................... and those in purgatory,

GUIDE: In the fourth sorrowful mystery we will meditate

on: JESUS' ASCENT TO CALVARY.
(Read Mark 15:21-28 or Luke 23:26-31 or John 19:14-24).
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is
prayed:)

For love of us Jesus carried the cross and went up to

Calvary. Instead of judging and condemning others, we
need to make the effort to put up with their shortcomings
and help them overcome them. Only in this way will we
imitate Jesus.
O Mary, pierced with sorrow in the street of bitterness, for
finding in her your innocent Son, sentenced to death and
burdened with the heavy weight of the cross! We offer you
this Our Father and ten Hail Marys, begging you that the
soul of our brother (a) N.............................. and those who
are in purgatory, through your prayers before Jesus Christ
may be freed from the cross of sorrows they suffer. We ask
this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

FIFTH SORROWFUL MYSTERY

GUIDE: In the fifth sorrowful mystery we will meditate

on: THE CRUCIFIXION AND DEATH OF JESUS. (Read
Mark 15, 29-39 or John 19,25.37).
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is
prayed:)

"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life
for one's friends" (John 15:13-15), Jesus had said. And he
proves it by suffering and dying for us on the cross. Jesus
left us the greatest proof of his love. Now it is up to us to
know how to take advantage of this love, renouncing our
life of sin and trying to start a new life.
Knights of
Columbus

O disconsolate Queen, afflicted Mother, forsaken Virgin!

We offer this Our Father and ten Hail Marys to intercede

GLORIOUS MYSTERIES
(Wednesday and Sunday)

GUIDE: IN THE FIRST GLORIOUS MYSTERY we

will meditate on: THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS.
(Matthew 28:1-7 or Luke 24:13-35 or John 20:3-29).
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is
prayed:)

Jesus died and rose again. For Him sufferings and death
were the way to reach resurrection and glory. The same
will happen with us: if we accept the trials of this life with
patience we will one day achieve the great progress we all
desire: to die and rise with Christ.

O Mary, joy of the just and consolation of sinners! We

offer this Our Father and ten Hail Marys in memory of the
joy you had in seeing your Most Holy Son risen and

be to improve and progress, according to the teachings and
examples of Christ in order to attain the glory of heaven.

O Mary, Mother of God, full of joy at the ascension to

GUIDE: In the third glorious mystery we will meditate on:

THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
(Read Acts of the Apostles 2,1-3)
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is
prayed:)

Ten days after ascending to heaven, Jesus sent the apostles

the gift of the Holy Spirit, which transformed their entire
lives. They finally understood his message and had the
strength to live it and proclaim it with courage. We too, if
we want to be true Christians, need the strength of the Holy
Spirit, let us ask the Holy Spirit to give us the strength we
need.

FOURTH GLORIOUS MYSTERY

GUIDE: In the fourth glorious mystery we will meditate

on: MARY'S ASSUMPTION INTO HEAVEN.
(Read Luke 1, 46-55 or Revelation 12, 13-17) (After
reading the biblical quotation, the following is prayed:)

After having finished her period of life in this world, Mary

was taken to heaven, body and soul. It was a special gift
that Jesus gave to Mary, his Mother. Instead of waiting for
the day of the final resurrection, Jesus wanted me to go
soon to rejoice with Him in body and soul. Just as she is
already in glory, body and soul, so we hope to be after
death. For this we must imitate her example, O blessed
Mary, who gave your spirit at the hour of death into the
hands of your Son Jesus Christ, and then, united to your
body, rose again in glory! We offer this Our Father and ten
Hail Marys to you, so that you may intercede before your
Son Jesus Christ, so that the soul of our brother (a)

be resurrected and come to true life.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

FIFTH GLORIOUS MYSTERY

GUIDE: In the fifth glorious mystery we will meditate on:

THE CORONATION OF THE MOST HOLY VIRGIN
MARY.
(Read Revelation 12:1-5 or 19:4-16 or 21:1-14).
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is
prayed:)

In this world no one had the privilege of being as close to

Jesus as Mary, his Mother, also now in heaven, no one is as
close to Jesus as she is. As the Mother of Jesus, she enjoys
a great power of intercession: whatever she asks of Jesus
on our behalf, he always grants it to her. This is what we
are doing by praying this holy rosary. Therefore, we turn to
Mary with complete confidence, knowing that she is our
Queen and also our Mother.

O Sovereign Virgin Mary, Mother of God, risen in body

and soul, you were sublimated to glory and crowned
Empress of angels and men! We offer you this Our Father
and ten Hail Marys, beseeching you that the soul of our
brother (a) N....................................... and the others in
purgatory may merit by your prayers to be freed from the
pains they are suffering, so that they may be crowned with
glory, and that in

SECOND LUMINOUS MYSTERY

GUIDE: In the second luminous mystery, we will meditate

on THE SELF-RELEVATION OF THE LORD AT THE
WEDDING AT CANNA. (Read John 2:1-12
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is read)

Jesus reveals himself to us at the wedding feast of Cana as

the one who is always ready to listen to his mother and to
help us in our needs. Jesus and Mary never leave us alone,
even in times of pain and need we recognize their presence
among us, a presence always loving and full of tenderness
for those who suffer the most.

THIRD LUMINOUS MYSTERY

GUIDE: In the third luminous mystery, we will meditate on

THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD
AND THE INVITATION TO CONVERSION.
(LeeMarcos.1, 14-15)
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is
prayed:)

Jesus, while he was with us, announced to us the coming of

the Kingdom of God, which is nothing more than the life
that God wants for all his children; but to receive this life it
was necessary to convert, that is, to open our hearts to God.
Today he continues to invite us to open the doors of our
hearts and our families so that we can enjoy the life he
wants for all of us from now on.
O Mary, most sweet, consolation of souls! We offer this

FOURTH LUMINOUS MYSTERY

GUIDE: In the fourth luminous mystery, we will meditate

on THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD.
(Read Luke 9:2-13).
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is
prayed:)

Jesus took Peter, James and John to Mount Tabor to fully

manifest to them, in the radiance of His face, that He was
Knights of

the Son of God. He wanted to show them, from here, what

they would see later when they returned to the Father's
house. The apostles were faithful to the mission entrusted
to them and now enjoy forever that unforgettable
experience when Jesus was transfigured in their presence.

O Mary, most sweet, consolation of souls! We offer you

this Our Father and ten Hail Marys for the hope that, after
having faithfully fulfilled our mission in this life, we will
also contemplate your Son Jesus face to face; we beseech
you that the soul of our brother or sister N...................and
all those who are in purgatory may already contemplate our

THE INSTITUTION OF THE EUCHARIST. (Read Mark
14,1225)
(After reading the biblical quotation, the following is
prayed:)

Jesus stayed among us. We find it in each of our brothers

and sisters, especially in those who suffer the most; but we
also find it, and in a very special way, in the Eucharist. In it
he fulfills his promise to be with us every day until the end
of the world. In it He also remains as our food so that we
may eat and drink and thus have Eternal Life.

O Mary, most sweet, consolation of souls! We offer you

this Our Father and ten Hail Marys for the gratitude that
our hearts feel knowing that your Son has remained with us
in the Eucharist; we beseech you that the soul of our
brother (a) N.............................. and all those in purgatory,
who already in this life were nourished with the Bread that
gives Eternal Life, may live forever in the presence of our
Heavenly Father.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

LIFTING CEREMONY
CROSS
(Before beginning the last rosary)

CELEBRATOR: The novena

reminds us of a belief of our
indigenous ancestors, they
believed that on the ninth day, after death, it was easier to
pass from earth to heaven. Therefore, when a person died,
they burned his body, took his ashes to the house and
placed them in the form of a cross; they did this
remembering that the sun, who was their greatest god,
walks from east to west and man walked from north to
south. The ashes remained like this until the ninth day,
when the ninth day arrived, they were collected and taken
to be buried.

By picking it up, we want to indicate that we are picking

up the footsteps of our deceased brother or sister marked
by one of the lines of the cross. The other line is the
footsteps of God. In meeting one with the other, we
recognize that death is the meeting of the steps of God and
the steps of man. This ceremony is performed by a married
or single person chosen in advance by the family of the
deceased. They must give testimony of their faith in
Eternal Life. These people become godparents, which
means that they must take care, provide the necessary and
watch over the corporal and spiritual formation of the
whole family that chose them; only death can destroy this
commitment.

CELEBRATOR
The cross that we have laid out is already dressed with
white flowers, they remind us of the Holy Shroud with
which Jesus was wrapped. We believe that like Jesus, our
Knights of
Columbus
brother (a) N................................. will be free from all evil.
We have placed the white flowers in the shape of a cross
and a red one in the center as a symbol of the heart. The
white flowers remind us of those that the Blessed Virgin
Mary of Guadalupe gave to Juan Diego; with this memory
we entrust our brother (a) N.............................. to her
blessed Mother's protection. We surrounded our cross with
9 candles or white crayons in remembrance and gratitude
to God for having allowed him to still be with family,
neighbors and friends for 9 more days. We also place in the
four points of the cross and one in the center these five red
candles; this reminds us of the blessed wounds and the
most precious blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ shed for our
salvation.

ANIMADOR: There is also a metal or wooden cross that is

taken to the cemetery after mass and on which the name of
our deceased is placed. Thus we remind God that our
brother and sister N....................................although a
sinner, was a child of God.

The candles that are placed around the body of the

deceased, our ancestors placed them to illuminate the path
that the deceased will travel until reaching the afterlife.
Knights of
Columbus

For us, the light of the candle signifies the faith that
encourages us, the hope that animates us, but above all, the
presence of the Risen Christ, light of the world, who has
overcome the darkness of sin.

For the indigenous people, the cross was the sign with
which they represented the god of life and the holy place
where the gods were. When a person died, they burned his
body, took his ashes to the house and placed them in the
form of a cross. They did this because they considered that
at death the path of god (from east to west) crossed with
the path of man (north to south).
For us, the cross reminds us of the great love and self-
giving of Jesus who gives us Life in abundance, Eternal
Life.

INCENSE is offered only to God, thus revealing that Jesus

is God.

Incense, represents the smoke that rises in the prayer that

we make to the divinity of Christ.

THE SALT. An element of purification, it also serves to

prevent the body from being corrupted. Why did Jesus tell
his disciples that they were the salt of the earth?

Jesus speaks to his own in Matthew 5:13 and tells them

"you are the salt of the earth". This means that by being
born again, the human being already has the capacity or the
quality to season, to put the necessary ingredient in the

4
7
Knights of
Columbus

exact portion to the things of life. The disciple will not

become, but is already salt of the earth.

4
8
Knights of
Columbus

The word translated here as "salt" comes from the Greek

jalas which of course translates as salt (seasoning), but
which also has a figurative sense that translates as
prudence. Prudence is understood as caution, moderation,
balance and equilibrium. It also means good sense, good
judgment. The Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy
defines prudence as a virtue that consists of discerning and
distinguishing what is good or bad in order to follow it or
flee from it.
Two of the qualities of Salt that Jesus had in mind were:
1 Its power of conservation and
2 The quality of giving flavor and seasoning.

Jesus asks us to preserve and keep the truths of the gospel

and to apply those truths in the exact measure to give the
true meaning and the best flavor to the things that happen
to us in life.
Matthew 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt be
dissolved, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for
nothing but to be cast out and trodden under foot by men.

Water in the ancient rites, the Indians sprinkled water on

the head of the deceased telling them: "This is the water
with which you have to make this journey". Water has a
wealth of meaning.

I want to explain to you what holy water means.

All of us were baptized with baptismal water; baptismal
water is the most sacred water that our Catholic Church
has. With this water we were given a Christian name: from
that day on we are children of God; from our baptism we
can complete the Kingdom of God's Kingdom.

heavens. Now, with this water, blessed by the baptismal

water, we will remind our Father God, that our brother
Knights of
Columbus

(a) ................................. is a baptized (a), who is his son

(a).

CELEBRATOR Let us pray:

Father God, our brother (a) ..................... many years ago
was baptized with water: from that day on he (she) bears a
Christian name and is your son (a). Do not ignore it at this
moment, do not reject it. If he sinned and did wrong in his
life, may you now, remembering his baptism, have mercy
on this your child. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

ALL: Amen Jesus.

CELEBRATOR: (sprinkles holy water on the coffin saying

and/or cross) Eternal rest grant unto him (her) and let
perpetual light shine upon him (her). Rest in Peace.
So be it. Amen Jesus.
CELEBRATOR: All this ceremony prior to the Cross
Raising is performed by the godparents. Let us pray the last
Rosary!

(Once the last rosary is finished, the cross is raised)

Now the sponsors will pick up the cross and place it in a

good sized box dressed in black. We also prepare a black
ribbon or the color of the costume of the saint to whom our
deceased brother or sister was devoted and a wax.
(Sponsors do this).

CELEBRATOR: The sponsors will now put aside the

flowers on the cross. With the dustpan and the little broom,
they will lift the cross, following the way we dress, starting
with the head.
(Sponsors do this)
Knights of
Columbus

ANIMATOR: Brothers, let us ask God for forgiveness for

the sins that our brother or sister has committed by not
thinking of the good of others; and let us not forget that
pride and arrogance can dry up our lives forever.

CELEBRATOR: Now the godparents pick up the head

portion as we sing.

COLLECTING THE LIME CROSS WITH THE

NOVENARIO DE DIFUNTOS PAG-6 9

CELEBRATOR: Now there is no trace left of the cross we

had laid out. I ask the godparents to put in the box also the
flowers that dressed it, so we remember that the Victory of
Jesus Christ over death is also our victory; therefore, the
cross of our brother (a) N........................... (Raise the Cross
and put the ribbon or the white scarf) ISNO LONGER
HANGED, NOW IT IS STANDING, IT IS
TRIUMPHANT.

ANIMATOR: While the godparents finish lifting

everything and tying the ribbon in the shape of a cross, we
all repeat:
ALL: Sweet logs of the cross! Sweet nails! Sweet the fruit
he gave us!
Knights of
Columbus

CELEBRATOR: Now the godmother takes the box and the

godfather takes the wax and gives it to all present to kiss. This is
done as a form of farewell and thanks to those who accompanied
our brother (a) N.......................................h until the end. While
incense and songs remind us that no one knows the day or hour of
his death and that we must strive day by day to be better.
(If possible, incense the black box three times with ash and wax).

LECTOR: Let us sing to this Christian soul: Arise, Christian soul,

(If it is possible to have the mass in the chapel or temple: The

following invitation is made:)

Brothers and Sisters, let us participate in the Mass with the last
remains of our brother (a) N ......................................There
It will be confirmed that this Christian soul has already passed to
a better life; and that he is waiting for his relatives, friends and
neighbors to help him to be saved from now on with our prayers
and good deeds.

(After hearing mass, or the next day, one goes to the Pantheon
and buries the box at the foot of the tomb, remembering: "That
dust you are and to dust you shall return". But having next to him
the cross of Jesus Christ, which is a sign of the passage to the
Resurrection).
