US TO UGUS UPGRADE HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

Background There are certain hardware requirements that must be met to install the
UGUS (Universal GUS). US stations built as CE compliant have the
correct hardware and cables to install the UGUS.

Basic UGUS Table 1 lists the basic hardware requirements of the UGUS. Cable
Requirements issues can be resolved with special adapters that are available in UGUS
kits designated for non-CE stations. Power supply, monitor, keyboard,
re-moveable media and processor issues will only be corrected by
installing the required hardware.
UGUS can be installed in any existing LCN chassis. With a dual-
node chassis it must be installed in the lower node, preferably in
slot 2 of the lower node.
UGUS can be installed on any software base running R533.2, R601.5,
R611.2, R620.1, or above but only with K4SDR processors. R533.4,
R620.4, and R630 or above will also support K4LCN 8 & 16 MW boards.
Table 1
Hardware Requirements
Power Supply Because of higher +12 volt current requirements of UGUS only the newer LCN
power supplies will provide sufficient power. These newer, acceptable 5 and 10
slot power supplies can be identified by having only 2 LED indicators. The older
5 and 10 slot supplies that cannot be used will have 6 LED indicators. Older
Dual Node supplies (PN 51401497-100) are not capable of generating the
current necessary for the UGUS, and therefore would require replacement. See
Table 2 for part numbers of acceptable components.
LCN Processor Until R533.4 and R630 or above software is available, only the newer K4SDR
processor can be used. R533.4, R620.4, and R630 or above software will be
compatible with older versions of the K4LCN 16 meg. board and also the K4LCN
8 meg. board. Be aware, however, that a K4LCN-8 MW. board allows you to run
GUS Native Window software only. K4LCN-4 MW. PWAs WILL NOT WORK.
Monitor UGUS Window 2000 system supports various scan rates. Older LCN interlaced
monitors can not be used. Also most UxS monitors that are fixed scan rate will
not work. Non-interlaced (enhanced) monitors are required. The first LCN non-
interlaced monitors have a single fixed scan rate of 640 x 480 @ 60 Hzs refresh
rate. They will work but only allow running UGUS at its lowest resolution. All
Sony monitors currently supplied on new stations and as replacements are multi-
sync and will operate at all scan rates available with UGUS. See CRM
documents "PD 15 B04 (B)" to identify all monitors used in Classic consoles and
"PD 15 B04 (L)" to identify all monitors used in Ergonomic consoles.
PS/2 Keyboard A PS/2 keyboard and mouse will also need to be added to be able to log into
& Mouse Windows 2000. Honeywell has a fixed PC keyboard with built-in trackball that
can be installed in the station. A Honeywell supplied PC keyboard and mouse is
also available, see Table 2.
OEP Keyboard If an OEP keyboard is used with UGUS, one that generates both a press code
and release code is required. There have been 4 different keyboard interface
electronics boards (located just under the OEP membrane) produced. Only the
latest board, 51401952-x00 generates both the press and release code. See
"PD 15 B06 (A)" for details on keyboard assemblies.

Engineer (and “roving”) keyboards which
will not work with UGUS. The CFGK
installs in the console in the location the
original engineering keyboard occupied.

OEP This procedure is for visual identification purposes only. By following the
Identification steps below, a trained technician will be able to identify the presence of the
required component located under the OEP membrane keyboard. The
presence of this component (silver capacitor) will determine that the OEP
keyboard has the correct Key Press functionality for use with UGUS.

Step Action

1 On the keyboard, flip the reset switch protective cover toward the monitor.

2 Place a small mirror on the keyboard

approximately six inches from the left side of the
keyboard edge.

3 Direct the flashlight beam at the mirror so that

you can view the components underneath the
OEP membrane keyboard.

You may need to adjust the angle of the mirror to receive the best view of the components
under the membrane keyboard.

4 Once the best angle of view is acquired, look for a silver capacitor approximately half an inch in
length and 1.5 inches in from the edge. See Figure 1 and Figure 2

5 If a capacitor is present, your OEP membrane keyboard can be used with the UGUS.

If you are unable to identify a capacitor, your OEP membrane keyboard cannot be used with
the UGUS. The keyboard I/F needs to be updated with a 51401577-500 assembly.
