When we read it is very important to notice whether statements are given as facts or only as
reports of what people believe. Study the statements below and try to decide which ones are
reports of what some people believe.

Write down all the statements from the list below that you decide are beliefs rather than facts.
Begin each with one of the following phrases:

EXERCISE CB Assessing the truth of statements

Sometimes a writer tells us that something is true and sometimes he writes about something in
such a way that we can conclude that it is true.

Look at the statements below and note whether you think each one does or does not follow from
what is said in the passage. Write the numbers 1- 7 in your notebook, followed in each case by
does follow or does not follow.

1. Some biologists do not believe that organisms evolve. (Does not follow the passage).

2. All vertebrate embryos have a brain case. (If you follow the passage).

3. An adult fish has no hearing apparatus. (Does not follow the passage).

4. There is a greater resemblance between a fish embryo and a mammal embryo than

EJERCICIO A Distinguir hechos y creencias.

Cuando leemos, es muy importante notar si las declaraciones se dan como hechos o sólo como
informes de lo que la gente cree. Estudie las afirmaciones siguientes y trate de decidir cuáles son
informes de lo que creen algunas personas.

Escriba todas las afirmaciones de la lista a continuación que decida que son creencias en lugar de
hechos. Comience cada uno con una de las siguientes frases:

EJERCICIO CB Evaluación de la veracidad de las afirmaciones

A veces un escritor nos dice que algo es verdad y otras veces escribe sobre algo de tal manera que
podemos concluir que es verdad.

Mire las declaraciones a continuación y observe si cree que cada una se sigue o no de lo que se
dice en el pasaje. Escribe los números del 1 al 4 en tu cuaderno, seguidos en cada caso de sigue o
no sigue.

1. Algunos biólogos no creen que los organismos evolucionen. (No sigue el pasaje).

2. Todos los embriones de vertebrados tienen una cápsula cerebral. (Si sigue el pasaje).
