Rockin’ Phonics

Monday-Friday lesson. There is a Power Point included that has the lessons for each day. Here is the weekly layout:

*Drum and Strum- used to practice saying sounds in isolation and then blend together. Directions are on the slide.
*Word Sort- Students will do this with paper/crayon as you go through on the Power Point.

Tuesday:
*Go through Anchor Chart
*See It- Write It- use sound boxes to practice writing words.
*ROCKSTAR words- Directions are one the slide.
*Game rotations (Day 1)- each group will play one game

Wednesday:
*Go through Anchor Chart
*Drum and Strum- used to practice saying sounds in isolation and then blend together. Directions are on the slide.
*Real vs. Silly Sort- Students will do this with paper/pencil as you go through on the Power Point.
*Game rotations (Day 2)- each group will play one game

Thursday:
*Go through Anchor Chart
*See It- Write It- use sound boxes to practice writing words.
*SCOOT game (whole group)
*Game rotations (Day 3)- each group will play one game

Friday:

*ROCKSTAR words- Directions are on the slide.
*Game rotations (Day 4)- each group will play one game

Directions for Power Point File- once you open up the file, you MUST go to slide show view for the links and animations
to work. I suggest purchasing a “clicker” so that you can then click through the slides instead of having to touch the
board each time you want the next slide or animation.
Short a games
These games are built into the Rockin’ Phonics daily activities. There
are four days and each group will play one game each day. I teach
these whole group prior to having them play in groups so that they
know exactly how to play. We play the game for about 8-10 minutes
(depending on what they can handle and how engaged they are). Each
game is meant to be played with either 2 or 3 players. You may need a
few board games printed per group.

GAME 1- BUMP
Materials Needed: spinner/pencil/paper clip, game board, each player
needs 10 “markers” of the same color (unifix cubes/counters/beans).
Players must have different colors.

Directions: Player 1 will spin the spinner and find the word that
matches. They place their “marker” on the word. The next player
does the same. If they spin a word that already has the opponent’s
“marker” on it, they can BUMP it off. If you spin a word that already
has your “marker” on it, you can lock it in place and it cannot be
bumped off. The goal is to be the first person to get rid of all their
“markers”.

GAME 2- FOUR IN A ROW
Materials Needed: spinner/pencil/paper clip, game board
(there are two versions included), each player needs
“markers” of the same color (unifix
cubes/counters/beans). Players must have different
colors.

Directions: Player 1 will spin the spinner and find a word

with that word family. They must first read the word
and then put their ”marker” on it. Player 2 will do the
same. The object is to get four in a row. Encourage
children to try to block their opponent. If they finish,
they play again until time is called.

GAME 3- MEMORY
Materials Needed: memory cards with words printed on
paper that cannot be seen through

Directions: Mix up cards and place cards face down in

rows. Player 1 will turn over two cards. If they are a
match, they can keep the cards. If they are not a match,
they turn them back over. Player 2 will do the same thing.
If a player gets a match, they get to go again. Play until
all the cards are gone. The person with the most matches
is the winner. **There are 3 pages of cards. I usually only
use 2 pages at the beginning of the year.

GAME 4- Snakes and Ladders
Materials Needed: die, game board, each player needs a
game ”marker”( players must have different colors)

Directions: Player 1 will roll the die and move that many
spaces. They place their “marker” on the space and read
the word. The next player does the same. If they land on
a space with the bottom of a ladder, they can climb the
ladder. If they land on a space with the top of the snake,
they slide down the snake. The player to get to the
trophy first wins. They must roll the exact number to
get to the trophy.

SCOOT (Thursday)
Materials Needed: SCOOT cards placed at each desk,
recording sheets

Directions: Students start at their own desk. Make sure

that they know the direction they are moving around the
room. They look at the card and write the word on their
recording sheet. When the teacher says SCOOT, they move
to the next seat. They move around the desks until they
have reached every desk. If you have less students than
24 (number of cards), you can do them together at the
beginning. If you have more than 24 students, you can
partner some of them up and then can move and record
together.

Additional Recording Sheets also included for word sorts

and Say It/Write It.
