Cairo university

Faculty of oral and dental medicine

Department of Endodntics

Fixed prosthodontic master degree (Endodontic course)

Course topics and intended learning outcomes:

1-Tooth morphology and endodontic access cavity preparation:

a. Describe variations in root canal anatomy for individual teeth.
b. Correlate between morphology and access cavity preparation.
c. Trouble shooting access cavity preparation; calcification, tilted crown,
restoration.

2-Cleaning and shaping of the root canal system:

a. Describe working length determination techniques and devices (generations

of apex locator and guidelines for their use)
b. Describe guidelines for the use of NiTi rotary instruments.
c. Compare different techniques for shaping the root canal (step-back, crown-
down, hybrid) manual versus rotary. Compare the efficiency of different
instrument used for shaping the root canal (materials as stainless steel versus
nickel-titanium rotary instruments and including the effect of design features
on cleaning and shaping).
d. Distinguish techniques for negotiating severely curved, blocked, calcified or
constricted canals. (Role of chelating and decalcifying agents).
e. Describe temporization of extensively damaged teeth and Outline techniques
and materials used for long term temporization

3- Obturation of root canal system:

a. Compare different materials used for root canal obturation (core obturating
materials and sealers most commonly used and list their constituents,
physical properties, advantages, disadvantages, indications and
contraindications)
b. Identify the factors that affect selection of root canal obturation techniques
(including lateral compaction technique, vertical compaction technique,
thermoplasticization, thermocompaction, paste injection, core carrier
systems, sectional obturation and custom cone).I .
c. Correlate between obturating materials used and strength properties of
endodontically treated teeth

4- Endodontic diagnosis and Endodontic emergency:

a. Correlate subjective and objective findings with pulpal and periapical

disease.
b. Differentiate between dentinal pain, pulpal and periapical pain
c. Differentiate between odontogenic and non odontogenic pain (referred pain)
that may lead to misdiagnosis.
d. Differentiate and diagnose between different emergency cases as they occur
before treatment, between appointments (interappointment flare-up), and
after obturation.
e. Plan the best clinical management for each case and how overcome
anesthetic problem.
a. Detail the pharmacologic supportive therapy (analgesics, antibiotics, and

anti-inflammatory agents) used in emergencies and their role in controlling

infection, inflammation or pain.

5- Fixed prosthodontic and endodontic relations:

a. Describe pulp tissue reaction to fixed prosthodontics treatment procedures
and materials and pulp protection of pulp during fixed prosthodontics
treatment.
b. Discuss the factors affecting choice of restoration for endodontically treated
teeth with reference to the type of restoration that should be used for every
case. (Mature and immature teeth)
c. Discuss post space preparation techniques ( GP removal and smear layer
removal)
d. Correlate between obturating materials and restorative materials used.
e. Evaluate the effect of different type of sealers and obturating materials on
the adaptability of cements.

6-Traumatic injuries:
a. Describe possible short –and long- term responses of pulp, periradicular
tissues, and hard tissues to enamel fractures, crown fractures without pulp
exposures, crown fracture with pulp exposure, crown root fracture, root
fracture, tooth luxation (concussion, subluxation, lateral luxation, extrusive
luxation, intrusive luxation) avulsion
b. Discuss appropriate treatment strategies (both at the time of injury and at
follow up) for various types of traumatic injuries.
c. Identify the criteria for success or failure of various treatment modalities of

traumatic injuries.
d. Differentiate between surface, inflammatory, and replacement resorption
(ankylosis) and their respective treatment strategies.
