ABSTRACT

The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is a test that measures your
ability to understand English. It also measures your ability to take a standardized, multiple-
choice test in English. In order to score well on the TOEIC test, you must have two goals:
improve your proficiency in English and improve your test-taking skills. This course will
teach you language strategies and test strategies that will help you reach these goals and
score well on the TOEIC test. This module covers the basics you’d need to get a rounded
feel for the subject. The focus of this meeting discusses the Part 2 of the Book: The
Longman Preparation Series for the TOEIC® Test to improve your English listening skill.

PURPOSE(S)

The students listen to the question and three responses.

To help students identify all the words in the question and three responses.

To help students paraphrase the question or statement they hear. You're coming, aren't you?
can be paraphrased as I hope you plan to come. Options such as, Yes, of course, can be
paraphrased as Sure.

To help the students personalize their statements. The students can work in pairs and
develop small dialogues: You're coming to my house tonight, aren't you? No, I'm sorry. I have
to study.
DISCUSSION
OVERVIEW

In this module, you will be guided to do the Listening tests. Demonstrate how well you
understand spoken English. Test yourself for approximately 45 minutes to complete the
listening test.

Take a lot of practice tests to train your brain to retrieve the information it needs from your
memory. It will also improve your test skills. You might think that listening to music or talking
to your friends will help you relax, but distractions make it more difficult to retain the
information that you are studying, so find a quiet place for you to study.

STRATEGY OVERVIEW

The exercises on the following pages will help you develop strategies for listening to the
questions and choosing the best response. They will help you use context clues to guess
what the question and response are about, and will help you improve your vocabulary.

LANGUAGE STRATEGIES

Listen for words that tell you whether it is a statement or a question and that are associated
with these topics:
• Statements - Listen for statements that begin with a person's name, a pronoun, or an object.
• Occupations - Listen for Who? questions.
• Activities - Listen for What? questions.
• Time - Listen for When?, How often?, and How long? questions.
• Location - Listen for Where? questions.
• Reason - Listen for Why? questions.
TEST STRATEGIES

Some answer choices are made to confuse you. They are written to seem correct, but they
really are not. Here are some common types of confusion in answer choices.

- Similar Words - Listen for similar words. Some words sound similar (read, need) or
have similar meanings (came, arrived). Answer choices that contain words similar to
words in the statement/ question are not necessarily the correct answer.

- Repeated Words - Listen for repeated words. Answer choices that repeat words used
in the statement/ question are not necessarily the correct answer.
