FLOCCULANT TESTING

Unfortunately, by t h e t i m e t h e s e i n d i c a t o r s
have detected problems t h e t h i c k e n e r may b e i n
s e r i o u s trouble. I f a n i n c o r r e c t amount of
f l o c c u l a n t h a s been added, t h e t h i c k e n e r w i l l b e
almost f u l l of improperly f l o c c u l a t e d material.
'This can t a k e a s long a s twenty f o u r hours t o
correct.

To ensure proper f l o c c u l a t i o n i s o c c u r r i n g , a
sample should be dipped from t h e c e n t e r w e l l and
t h e s e t t l i n g r a t e observed. T h i s w i l l a l l o w
adjustment of t h e f l o c c u l a n t r a t e b e f o r e t h e
t h i c k e n e r i s f u l l of improperly f l o c c u l a t e d pulp.
Acceptable s e t t l i n g r a t e should b e determined by
p l a n t experience. One i n c h i n t h r e e minutes i s
g e n e r a l l y adequate i f t h e t h i c k e n e r i s p r o p e r l y
s i z e d . Center w e l l sampling should be a p a r t of
normal procedure t o allow o p e r a t o r s t o d e t e c t
unexpected o r e changes, flow r a t e v a r i a t i o n s . o r
f l o c c u l a n t system malfunctions.

P l a n t o p e r a t i o n s should r e t u r n t o t h e o r i g i n a l
f l o c c u l a n t f o r s e v e r a l weeks a f t e r t h e i n i t i a l
t e s t period with a new f l o c c u l a n t . T h i s w i l l
allow comparison of d a t a b e f o r e and a f t e r t h e
t r i a l ; changes i n i t i a t e d f o r t h e p l a n t trial may
i n c r e a s e e f f i c i e n c y of t h e o r i g i n a l f l o c c u l a n t .
I t w i l l a l s o allow t h e o r i g i n a l f l o c c u l a n t s t o c k
t o b e depleted and p r w i d e time f o r more floccu-
l a n t t o be d e l i v e r e d .

One f i n a l n o t e of c a u t i o n . D e s p i t e t h e b e s t
l a b o r a t o r y t e s t i n g , t h e new f l o c c u l a n t may p r w e
t o b e u n s a t i s f a c t o r y . I n t h e purchase o r d e r f o r
t e s t m a t e r i a l s p e c i f y t h a t any remaining m a t e r i a l
may b e returned f o r c r e d i t i f t h e p l a n t t e a t
p r w e s unsatisfactory.

CONCLUSION

Complete l a b o r a t o r y e v a l u a t i o n s should b e conduc-


t e d p r i o r t o s t a r t i n g any p l a n t t r i a l . A bad
l a b o r a t o r y s e t t l i n g t e s t c a n simply b e poured down
t h e d r a i n ; a bad p l a n t trial may r e q u i r e s e v e r a l
days t o be completely c o r r e c t e d .

F l o c c u l a n t t e s t i n g can b e a n easy way t o d e c r e a s e


o p e r a t i n g c o s t s without major c a p i t a l e x p e n d i t u r e .
Be aware of new products o r procedures t h a t may
i n c r e a s e e f f i c i e n c y or reduce o p e r a t i n g c o s t s .
