Consistency of soil

What is Consistency?

Consistency means the relative case with

which soil can be determined. The term is

used for fine grained soil.

*From the figure above, at a very low moisture content, soil behaves more
like a solid. When the moisture content is very high, the soil and water may
flow like a liquid.
*Also, soil strength decreases as water content increases.
* Therefore, the soil behavior of the soil, based on is divided into four states
based on moisture content: solid, semi-solid, plastic, liquid.
The boundary between these states are known “
atterberg limits”
1- Shrinkage limit
*Maximum water content at which a reduction in
water content will not cause a decrease in the volume
of soil.
*Lowest water content at which soil can be
saturated.
2- Plastic limit
The plastic limit is the water content corresponding
to limit between the plastic and semi –solid state
3- Liquid limit
The water content, in percent, at the point of
transition from plastic to liquid state
The water content required to close a distance of ½ inch(12.7
mm) along the bottom of the groove after 25 blows is defined as
the Liquid Limit.
