Indication of dental implant

1. Missing teeth for any reason.

2. Painful and loose denture.

3. Prevention of shrinkage of jaw bone.

4. Single tooth loss to avoid involving neighboring teeth as abutments.

5. Hyperactive gag reflex.

6. Habits that compromise prosthesis stability.

Contraindication of dental implant

1. Conditions, diseases or treatment that seriously compromise healing.

2. Uncontrolled diseases.

3. Inability of patient to manage oral hygiene.

4. Patient hypersensitivity to specific components of the implant.

Benefits of dental implant

1. They support artificial teeth firmly and safely.

2. Implants restore teeth function and esthetic to the normal level.

3. Prevent progressive bone atrophy and shrinkage.

Advantages of implant supported prostheses

1. Maintain the alveolar bone.

2. Restore and maintain occlusal vertical dimension.

3. Eliminates the need to involve the adjacent teeth.

4. Improve esthetic and phonetics.

5. Increase prosthesis success.

6. Improve masticatory performance.

7. Reduce size of prosthesis.

8. Improve stability and retention of removable prostheses.

9. Increase survival times of prostheses.

10. Improve psychological health.

Disadvantages of implant supported prostheses

1. A surgical procedure for implant placement and a period of healing

is necessary before the prosthesis may be completed.

2. Dental implant procedure may entail an increase in cost compared

to conventional dentistry.

3. Porcelain fracture of crowns and bridgework on implants is much

more prevalent than on natural teeth due to lack of shock absorbency

between the implants and the bone.
