What is Research Proposal?
4

 Research proposal is a planning document that

outlines your thinking about a research problem
and describes what is to be studied and how.

 The research proposal is a detailed plan of a study.

 It is a document which shows researchers’ ideas in

an easily accessible way.

Compiled by: Zinashbizu L. (PhD) 12/13/2022

What is Research Proposal? …
5

 It is a plan of future research and an explanation

of how it will be achieved

 A written document requesting both authorization

and funds to undertake a specific research project

 The intent of the written research proposal is to

provide a focused and scholarly presentation of a
research problem and plan.

Compiled by: Zinashbizu L. (PhD) 12/13/2022

What is Research Proposal? …
6

 The research proposal is a way of thinking clearly

about
 the destination you want to get to,

 the means of getting there and the arrangements

you have to make in order to undertake the
research.

Compiled by: Zinashbizu L. (PhD) 12/14/2022

Think –pair-share
7

 Why research proposal is important?

 Think of it independently
 Discuss on it with your colleague,
 Share your discussion point to the
class.

Compiled by: Zinashbizu L. (PhD) 12/14/2022

Objective of the research proposal
8

 The objective in writing a proposal is to describe:

what you will do objective

why it should be done justification/ significance
When to do it time table
how you will do it methods and materials
what you expect will result Hypotheses

Compiled by: Zinashbizu L. (PhD) 12/13/2022

Importance of the research proposal
9

 It serves as a basis for determining the

feasibility of the research project.

 It provides a systematic plan of procedure for

the researcher to follow.

 It gives the research supervisor a basis for

guiding the researcher while conducting the
study.

 It reduces the probability of costly mistake.

Functions of Research Proposal:
i. For researcher /the student/
12

 it outlines researchers' thinking about what

he/she will be investigating –
 the focus,
 the limits,
 the logical development of his/her
investigation and
 the methods he/she will be using to
investigate the topic.

Compiled by: Zinashbizu L. (PhD) 12/13/2022

Functions of Research Proposal:
ii. For supervisor
13

 a proposal is an indication of whether the researcher

/student/ have done adequate thinking about the
topic and sufficient preparation for the study.
 an indication of researcher‟s /student‟s/ ability to
put his/her ideas into clear and logical
writing.
 contract between researcher and supervisor - it
effectively says what you wish to study and how.

 It gives researcher and his/her supervisor a plan

of action to follow in order to reach completion of
the thesis (the ultimate aim!).

Compiled by: Zinashbizu L. (PhD) 12/13/2022

Functions of Research Proposal:
iii. For funders
14

The proposal gives a clear indication of:

whether the researcher have thought
clearly about the topic,

whether it is something feasible and

worth supporting.

Functions of Research Proposal:
iv. For the rest of the academic community
15

It is an indication of the focus of researcher‟s

investigation and how it links to the ongoing
debates in the literature.

The research proposal is researcher’s

opportunity to persuade the academic
community

Functions of Research Proposal:
iv. For the rest of the academic community…
16

A good research proposal will help researcher:

define and formulate his/her research
question;
narrow down the study to a manageable
form within the prescribed time limits;
structure the development of his/her
writing;
Avoid wasting time in the literature search
and data collection stages of the project.

Compiled by: Zinashbizu L. (PhD) 12/13/2022

Criteria used to evaluate research proposal
17

 A well-thought and written proposal can be

judged according to three main criteria.
 Is it adequate to answer the research question(s),
and achieve the study objective?

 Is it feasible in the particular set-up for the study?

 Does it provide enough detail that can allow

another investigator to do the study and arrive at
comparable results?

Common Mistakes in Proposal Writing
65

 Failure to provide the proper context to frame the research

question.

 Failure to delimit the boundary conditions for your research.

 Failure to accurately present the theoretical and empirical

contributions by other researchers.

 Failure to stay focused on the research question.

 Failure to develop a coherent and persuasive argument for

the proposed research.

Common Mistakes in Proposal Writing….
66

 Too much detail on minor issues, but not enough detail

on major issues.

 Too much rambling -- going "all over the map" without a

clear sense of direction. (The best proposals move
forward with ease and grace like a seamless river.)

 Too many citation lapses and incorrect references;

Failing to follow the proper citation style.
 Too long or too short.

 Slopping writing.
