A. INTRODUCTION

1. BACKGROUND

"Question tag" is an English language construction that transforms a

statement into a question. This type of sentence is used to seek confirmation or
affirmation from the interlocutor. Question tags can be used in various contexts,
such as in conversations, dialogues, or writing.
The question tag is a frequently used part of a native speaker's daily
conversation. Even if the grammar, pronounciation, and intonation are good, one
can easily be recognized as a non-native speaker if they don't use question tags.
The purpose of using the question tag is to ask for information or ask for
approval. When using it to ask for information, the speaker does not know
whether the information is true or false. In this case, the question tag is
emphasized with a rising intonation.

2. Types of Question Tags

Question tags can be divided into two types:
1. Question tags with modal verbs

Question tags with modal verbs are used for positive statements. The modal verbs
used are will, can, may, must, should, would, and could.

Example:

Positive statement: The weather is beautiful today.

Question tag: The weather is beautiful today, isn't it?

Question tags with main verbs

Question tags with main verbs are used for both positive and negative statements.
The main verbs used are be, have, and do.

Example:

```
Positive statement: You are going to the movies tonight.
3
Question tag: You are going to the movies tonight, aren't you?
Negative statement: You are not going to the movies tonight.
Question tag: You are not going to the movies tonight, are you?
```

In addition, there are a few things to keep in mind when using question tags:

* The **pronoun** used in the question tag must match the subject of the
statement.
* The **verb** used in the question tag must match the tense of the statement.
* The **tone** of the question tag can be used to express a variety of emotions,
such as doubt, disagreement, or surprise.

Here are some examples of how to use question tags in conversation:

```
A: Are you going to the movies tonight?
B: Yeah, I am.
A: You're going to see that new action movie, aren't you?
B: Yeah, that's right.
```

```
A: I think she is the one for me.
B: You think so?
A: Yeah, I do. She is beautiful, smart, and funny.
B: She sounds great.
Jenis-Jenis Question Tag
Nah, selanjutnya, kita akan membahas tentang berbagai jenis question tag. Mari
kita bahas satu persatu secara detail:
1. Positive Statement, Negative Question Tag
Kalau kalimat utamanya positif, question tag-nya jadi negatif, lho. Contohnya nih:
“You love cats, don’t you?”
Di sini, “You love cats” adalah kalimat positif dan “don’t you” adalah question tag
negatif.
2. Negative Statement, Positive Question Tag
Sebaliknya nih, kalau kalimat utamanya negatif, question tag-nya jadi positif.
Misalnya:
“You don’t like spiders, do you?”
Nah, di sini “You don’t like spiders” adalah kalimat negatif dan “do you” adalah
question tag positif.
3. Imperative Statement Question Tag
Question tag juga bisa digunakan di kalimat perintah, lho! Contohnya:
“Open the door, will you?” atau “Let’s go to the mall, shall we?”
4. Positive Statements with Positive Question Tags
5
Nah, di sini sedikit berbeda nih. Meski kalimat utamanya positif, question tag-nya
juga positif.
Mengapa? Karena kita menggunakan question tag ini untuk mengekspresikan rasa
tertarik, marah, atau kaget. Lihat contoh-contoh berikut:
“She is going ahead with her decision, is she?”
Question tag positif ‘is she’ berfungsi untuk menunjukkan rasa tertarik atau
kejutan tentang keputusan seseorang.
“You think this is a joke, do you?”
Di sini, question tag ‘do you’ digunakan untuk mengekspresikan rasa marah atau
frustrasi.
“So this is the way it is going to be from now on, is it?”
Yap, question tag ‘is it’ berlaku untuk menunjukkan kekecewaan atau kejutan
tentang suatu situasi.
Nah, itu dia beberapa jenis question tag. Tapi, tunggu dulu! Supaya lebih paham,
yuk kita lihat beberapa contoh question tag dalam percakapan sehari-hari di
bagian berikutnya.
C. KESIMPULAN
Korupsi adalah masalah yang memiliki akar yang sangat dalam dan
dampak yang merusak. Istilah "korupsi" berasal dari bahasa Latin, yang
mengandung makna tindakan merusak dan keburukan. Dalam berbagai perspektif,
korupsi diartikan sebagai penyalahgunaan kekuasaan atau posisi untuk
keuntungan pribadi, yang merugikan masyarakat dan negara secara keseluruhan.
6
Dampak negatif korupsi sangat luas, termasuk menghambat pertumbuhan
ekonomi, meningkatkan kemiskinan, memperburuk ketidaksetaraan sosial, dan
menghancurkan kepercayaan masyarakat terhadap pemerintah. Korupsi juga dapat
memicu kejahatan lainnya dan menyebabkan kerusakan lingkungan.
Pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang korupsi, baik dari segi definisi
maupun dampaknya, penting dalam upaya pencegahan dan penanganan korupsi.
Korupsi adalah tantangan global yang memerlukan peran aktif dari masyarakat,
pemerintah, dan lembaga internasional untuk mengatasi dampak negatifnya dan
mempromosikan tata kelola yang baik serta keadilan sosial.
